However, what Laurent didn’t expect was that shortly after she ended the call with Dave, she received a call from Tiffany. Tiffany sounded somewhat anxious.

"Laurent, Dave just came to take Emma. He looked really angry, and he said that from now on, I don’t need to worry about the child."

Tiffany recalled the look on her son’s face, and even now, she still felt uneasy.

"He took Emma?" Laurent panicked.

Just moments ago, she had been relieved that Tiffany would take care of her daughter and spare her some hardship. Dave had never taken care of a child before. He was a workaholic and didn’t know how to cook or handle housework. If he took care of their daughter, what kind of life would she have? Not to mention that he had his lover, Clark, by his side.

She quickly ended the call with Tiffany and immediately dialed Dave’s number.

He didn’t answer.

From this, Laurent was certain that taking their daughter was aimed directly at her, to make her anxious and fearful, to make her suffer. That was his ultimate goal.

He didn’t answer the phone, so she kept calling over and over again.

At that moment, Laurent hated him so much. Not for anything else, but because he was using their innocent child to get back at her.

After what felt like countless attempts, the call finally connected. She angrily and bitterly demanded an explanation.

"Dave, what do you want?"

On the other end, his tone was calm and nonchalant.

"I don’t want anything. I just wanted to remind you, with my actions, that since you’ve given up custody, after the divorce, if you want to see Emma, you’ll have to do it on my terms."

"When I’m in a bad mood, you can forget about seeing her for a month."

His tone was light and relaxed as he said this.

Laurent felt like she was going insane.

"Dave, you’re despicable!"

If she couldn’t see her daughter for a month, she really would lose her mind. It had already been so heartbreaking for Laurent to give up custody of her daughter. Now he was threatening her, saying she wouldn’t even be allowed to see her.

Was he trying to drive her to madness?

"If you think I’m despicable, and if you can’t live without your daughter, then just come back and obediently continue being Mrs. Washington!"

Laurent felt utterly hopeless, as if the sky had fallen, and yet he was still tightening his grip on her from the other end of the phone.

Overwhelmed with grief and anger, Laurent, for a brief moment, truly thought about ending it all. The words that came out of her mouth were filled with desperation.

"Dave, I wish you happiness."

"I hope you can treat Emma well."

After saying these two sentences, she immediately hung up the phone.

On the other end, Dave had originally intended to use this tactic to force her to retract her request for divorce. He knew that their daughter was her world. He knew that the girl, being just over three years old, had never been separated from her mother, which is why he took Emma away and told her she couldn’t see her daughter.

He thought that by doing this, she would soften, that she would obediently return and stop bringing up the divorce.

But what he didn’t expect was...

Thinking about the words she had just spoken, as if she was leaving a final message, and remembering how, during their time in Japan, she had often hinted at thoughts of ending her life, his heart suddenly twisted painfully. He immediately grabbed his phone and dialed her number.

It was turned off.

The little girl, who had been watching cartoons nearby, ran over and innocently asked him,

"Daddy, didn’t you say we were going to eat with Mommy? Why isn’t she here yet?"

He had just taken their daughter from her mother, telling the little girl they were going to have a meal together.

He thought that by preventing Laurent from seeing Emma, she would give in. He believed she would return, and that their family of three would go back to the way things used to be—peaceful and stable.

What Dave didn’t expect was that her personality would be so stubborn.

Laurent’s phone kept ringing unanswered, and Dave could no longer sit still.

He called the hotel manager, temporarily entrusting their daughter to him. The hotel was owned by Burg Eltz, and the manager was one of Dave’s trusted allies. Dave then told the little girl that he was going to pick up her mother and hurriedly left.

Except for Adeline, Dave had no idea where Laurent might go, so he headed there.

On his way to Adeline’s apartment, Dave called both Adeline and Lilian, asking them to continue trying to reach Laurent. He wondered if, like last time, she had just blocked his calls.

However, both Adeline and Lilian returned his calls, saying they couldn’t reach her.

The thought that she might be contemplating suicide made Dave’s chest tighten, as though a sharp knife had been driven into it. The pain was so intense that it made it hard for him to breathe. He pushed the accelerator down hard, speeding toward Adeline’s apartment.

When he arrived downstairs at Adeline’s building, he coincidentally ran into Adeline, who had rushed back after his phone call, worried about Laurent’s safety. They exchanged a brief look and said nothing as they hurried upstairs.

Dave, being a man, was stronger physically, so Adeline handed him the keys while she tried to catch her breath and continued to rush toward the apartment.

When Dave burst into Adeline’s apartment, Laurent was coming out of the kitchen with a fruit knife in her hand. The sight made his face pale, and without thinking, he rushed forward and snatched the knife from her, throwing it far away.

Standing there, still shaken, he shouted at her, his voice filled with fear.

"Laurent! Do you even realize what you’re doing?!"

Laurent had been startled by his sudden entrance, especially since he was being so rough and forceful.

She had simply found a couple of mangoes in the fridge and was going to peel them to eat. But when she heard the loud, forceful sound of the door opening, she thought something was wrong, since Adeline would never open the door like that. In a panic, she grabbed the knife and rushed out.

Now, seeing his reaction, she realized that he was afraid she was trying to end her life.
