You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 39- I’ve been selfish
She had made plans with Vivian for noon. After finishing the call with her mother, Laurent quickly tidied up and left, taking the bus to Vivian’s house.
Since Vivian was heavily pregnant and soon to give birth, it wasn’t convenient to meet outside for a meal, so they decided to meet at Vivian’s home. Vivian’s place was in a completely different direction from Adeline’s, and the bus ride took quite a while. On a day with no traffic, it took just over half an hour.
Laurent didn’t have a car, so taking the bus was the only option.
Vivian’s husband, Frank, opened the door for her. He was surprised when he saw her new hairstyle and gave her a once-over before teasing her with a smile.
"Wow, Laurent , how did you get so beautiful?"
Laurent rolled her eyes and snorted coldly.
"Complimenting another woman like that in front of your wife, is that appropriate?"
Laurent, Frank, and Leonardo had all been very familiar with each other in the past, so she was comfortable teasing them like this.
"Exactly, it’s too inappropriate. I’m punishing you. You’re cooking lunch for us today!"
Vivian, her large belly proudly displayed, walked over from behind, shoved Frank aside, and opened her arms to Laurent.
"Laurent, come here, give me a hug—"
Laurent, with a face full of disdain, laughed and dodged.
"Do you think we can still hug with that big ball in your belly?"
Vivian pouted in mock displeasure and protested.
"Little Laurent, you’re so mean! You don’t love me anymore!"
Laurent got goosebumps all over, but the smile on her face couldn’t be hidden.
Frank gave them a bemused glance, then turned to the kitchen to get busy.
Logically, their trading company had only recently been established, and it was a busy time. Frank should have been spending every day at the office. However, since Vivian was about to give birth, whenever he had free time, Frank chose to stay home with her. He brought any work that could be done at home to do there, just in case Vivian went into labor early and there was no one around to care for her.
This reminded Laurent of her own pregnancy.
Frank was doing exactly what a man in love with you should do.
It was quite ironic, but for Laurent, these things no longer mattered.
While Frank was preparing lunch in the kitchen, Laurent and Vivian sat in the living room, chatting.
After the initial teasing and laughter, Vivian’s bright eyes stayed fixed on Laurent. Laurent grew uncomfortable under her gaze and, laughing, scolded her.
"What are you staring at me for?"
In truth, Laurent knew exactly what Vivian was doing—she was carefully watching to see if she was upset but pretending not to say anything. She was observing whether Laurent had truly let go of her marriage with Dave.
"I’m really fine. I’ve cried all I needed to cry, and I’ve blamed all I needed to blame. Now, I’m at peace."
She explained herself to Vivian, trying to convince her that she had let go and asking Vivian not to worry about her anymore.
She truly was at peace now. It wasn’t as if she had to fall apart just because of a divorce.
But as she spoke, Vivian suddenly burst into tears and, with a choked voice, scolded her.
"Laurent, are you stupid? You had Leonardo, a man who loved you so much, and you let him go. Instead, you chose that arrogant, conceited Dave! And now look—your youth is gone, your heart was given away, and in the end, you have nothing!"
Vivian was also heartbroken for Laurent. The kindness Leonardo showed her was something both of them had witnessed. Back then, each of them had pushed Laurent toward Leonardo, but instead, Laurent had turned and eagerly thrown herself into Dave’s arms.
If she had been happy with Dave, it would have been fine, but in the end, it ended in divorce.
She had been hurt so deeply. Once such a bright and cheerful girl, Laurent had now become a quiet, troubled person with so many worries. Vivian, as her friend, couldn’t help but feel pain for her.
Seeing Vivian so upset on her behalf, Laurent recalled the advice they had all given her—urging her to accept Leonardo, urging her not to be with Dave.
Laurent knew how much Leonardo cared for her, but she just didn’t feel that kind of love for him. Being with Leonardo always felt like being with a good friend.
But every time she saw Dave, her heart would race, her breath would falter, and she would feel weak all over.
At that time, she had eagerly explained her feelings for Dave to Vivian and the others. She had said, "It’s like lightning striking the earth, no need for more—one glance is enough."
And that was truly how it had been. The first time she saw him in the hospital, she was lost. He hadn’t even spoken to her yet.
Indeed, one look had been enough, no words needed, no extra actions required.
Laurent handed Vivian a tissue.
"Alright, enough. Pay attention to your prenatal education and stop crying all the time."
Vivian took the tissue, and in frustration, she retorted.
"You’re a girl with brains but no emotional intelligence. I warn you, don’t make such foolish decisions again!"
Laurent laughed.
"Alright, alright. To prevent myself from making such a foolish choice again, I’ve decided not to date or look for a man anymore. That should be fine, right?"
Vivian snorted.
"Of course, that’s not fine. You need to go out and find someone who makes you happy, live the rest of your life full of love."
As she said this, Vivian winked at her and gave a teasing smile.
"As long as you want, there’s a ready-made option. Frank says Leonardo has been abroad recently filming an advertisement—"
Before Vivian could finish, Laurent cut her off, pretending to be displeased.
"Vivian, how can you be so bossy? First, you don’t want me to be foolish, then you want me to date? You’ve been spoiled by Frank! No, I’m going to protest to Frank!"
Then, she stood up and ran to the kitchen, avoiding Vivian’s attempt to talk to her about Leonardo.
Vivian, helpless and frustrated, protested behind her as Laurent had already rushed into the kitchen.
Vivian had no choice but to take out her phone and report Laurent’s situation to Marylin and Zoey:
"She’s doing fine. The divorce is final, and this time, she seems to have really given up." 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
Zoey replied:
"Well, as long as she’s okay. She’s always been good at self-regulating, hasn’t she? Back when Dave ignored her like that, she still managed to make herself happy. So now, we should trust in her ability to get through this on her own too."
Vivian replied to Zoey:
"As sharp as ever, I see. By the way, our sharp-tongued Zoey, when are you going to bring home a boyfriend?"
Zoey rolled her eyes at her and responded with a simple line:
"I’m off to work."
Vivian was just about to shift the boyfriend topic onto Marylin when Marylin deftly redirected the conversation:
"Should we tell Leonardo about her divorce?"
Vivian chuckled:
"I might have accidentally let it slip. Chances are Frank’s already told him..."
Marylin was speechless:
"Vivian, you’re unbelievable! How could you be so loose-lipped? She just got divorced; she’s probably not over it yet. And now that Leonardo knows, what if he immediately starts pursuing her again? It’ll probably end in failure again!"
Vivian, feeling guilty, replied:
"Frank said Leonardo is currently abroad shooting a commercial, plus he’s got a tour and stuff. I don’t think he’ll be back anytime soon."
Marylin snapped at her:
"In any case, if Leonardo fails again this time, you’ll have to bear the consequences."
As Laurent’s best friends from university, the three of them had witnessed Leonardo’s pursuit of Laurent firsthand. Naturally, they were staunch supporters of Team Leonardo, always rooting for him without question. So, upon hearing about Laurent’s divorce, their first thought was to set her up with Leonardo again.
Realizing she might have caused a big mess, Vivian quickly made an excuse and left. Marylin could only shake her head in frustration.
