Chapter 41: Chapter 41- Find a love?

Dave pulled the little girl onto his lap and spoke in a gentle tone.

"She said she’s going to take you on the bus to dinner tonight. Would you like that?"

Dave thought, since Laurent was so stubborn, he’d try to get through to their daughter. As long as she didn’t want to take the bus, Laurent would have no choice.

"The bus?"

The little girl tilted her head, thought for a moment, then nodded excitedly.

"Yes, I’d like that! I’ve never been on a bus before. I really want to try it."

Dave: "..."

After saying that, the little girl was about to jump off his lap to pick out clothes, but Dave stopped her and patiently tried to convince her.

"Think about it—if you wear a beautiful, fashionable dress like a princess, but then you have to squeeze in with so many people, soon your dress will get dirty, and your shoes will be covered in dust. Are you sure you want to take the bus?"

The little girl, upon hearing that her appearance might be affected, immediately hesitated, her big eyes blinking thoughtfully.

Dave was so calculating, skillfully persuading her with a honeyed approach.

"If you listen to Daddy tonight and do what I say, I’ll take you shopping for beautiful clothes and toys this weekend."

The sweetened deal worked every time with the little girl, especially when it involved clothes and toys she had longed for. The little girl was immediately swayed.

Meanwhile, after hanging up the phone, Vivian observed Laurent for a moment before speaking.

"If you had been this tough and firm with him from the start, maybe you wouldn’t have ended up like this."

Vivian thought back to Laurent’s obsession and submission to Dave in the past, and transformed into an emotional expert.

"Men are the same. Sometimes, the more you chase after them, the less they care. But if you keep them wanting, they’ll pay more attention to you."

Laurent shot her a look of annoyance.

"When did you become an emotional expert?"

Vivian snorted.

"Your dramatic love story turned me into one."

Laurent fell silent.

"Intense?"

Even if it had been intense, what did it matter? In the end, it still ended without any resolution.

Vivian, persistent as ever, asked her, "By the way, do you think Dave is still reluctant to let go of you? With how wonderful you are, has he not been moved by you at all over these years?"

Laurent felt her head spinning.

"Vivian, can we not talk about him?"

She didn’t want to think about Dave at all. Whether he was moved or not, whether he was willing or unwilling, it didn’t matter anymore. They were divorced, and she wasn’t going back.

She liked to focus on moving forward; lingering on the past was meaningless.

Vivian, sensing the shift, wisely dropped the subject. The two of them moved on to talking about children. As a woman who had gone through it before, Laurent shared her experiences with Vivian, especially the things to be aware of after childbirth.

The lunch that Frank prepared was lavish, with every dish looking and smelling perfect, supposedly to satisfy the cravings of a particular pregnant woman.

Laurent ate slowly and thought back to all those years when Dave had never once cooked for her. It had always been her making the meals, trying out new recipes, taking care of his stomach. With all the social events they attended, how could anyone have a good stomach? It was all alcohol, day in and day out. Still, she had dutifully tried her best to take care of him.

Sometimes, when she thought about it, Laurent didn’t regret the relationship and marriage, even though it ended in divorce. She had no regrets. At least, in those five years, she had truly given her all.

In the evening, Laurent took the bus to Lilian’s place. Tiffany was still living there, so her daughter was also staying with the Lady of the House.

Since moving out and deciding to divorce Dave, Laurent had not inquired about his parents, but seeing that Tiffany was still living with Lilian, it seemed she was still at odds with Daniel.

Laurent was a person with a failed marriage, so she felt she had no right to comment on Tiffany and Daniel’s marriage. However, whether it was Daniel or Tiffany, Laurent was very grateful to them. As her father-in-law and mother-in-law, they had always been kind and understanding toward her.

Thanks to their care and support, she didn’t feel too awkward during her five-year marriage.

When Laurent arrived downstairs at Lilian’s, her daughter was already waiting for her. She was wearing a pink tulle skirt and white little shoes, looking like a delicate little princess. Laurent chose to ignore the man standing beside her daughter and walked straight to her.

The little girl, seeing her mom approach, froze for a moment, then joyfully ran over and hugged her, showering her with compliments.

"Mom, your hair looks so beautiful!"

Laurent smiled, happy to hear it, and hugged her daughter, asking, "Really?"

"Yes, it’s so pretty, it looks really nice."

The little girl nodded vigorously.

Since Laurent had always had long hair, her daughter had never seen her with this new hairstyle. So, she was curious and fascinated, playfully touching Laurent’s hair.

From the side, someone spoke disdainfully with a cold expression, "What’s so special about it? You’re getting old and still dressing up like a little girl. Aren’t you embarrassed?"

When Laurent had walked over with this new look, Dave had almost failed to recognize her.

She was dressed simply and casually, unlike before when she always wore elegant, sophisticated dresses paired with high heels. With her new hairstyle, she looked like a young girl, full of energy and liveliness, almost as if she had returned to the bright and cheerful Laurent of the past. But now, she was slightly different from the old Laurent.

The old her had been carefree, while now, there was a certain calmness to her. She still looked bright and fresh, but now she also had a more gentle and composed aura, making her even more intriguing than before.

At first, he had been amazed, but then he felt a surge of anger.

He liked long hair, so both she and their daughter had long hair. But now that she had cut it so short, it seemed like she was doing it just to provoke him.

And, right after their divorce, she was dressing up so extravagantly. What was she really up to?

So, unable to control himself, a sharp, biting remark slipped from his mouth.

Laurent had originally planned to ignore him and leave with her daughter, but when he mocked her like that, how could she just let it slide?

Turning around with her daughter in her arms, she smiled at him charmingly, the smile full of charm.

"I’m at an age where I have to dress like a young girl, otherwise, how else would I find a love?"

After saying that, she turned and walked away, leaving Dave fuming, nearly spitting blood.

Find a love?

No wonder she was dressing up like this right after their divorce—she clearly had bad intentions!

As Laurent walked away with her daughter, just a few steps later, the little girl protested, clinging to her neck.

"Mom, I’m dressed so pretty today, I don’t want to take the bus..."

Laurent looked at her daughter as she walked and said,

"Then I’ll take you by taxi."

"But a taxi costs money. Why don’t we just take Dad’s car? It’s free."

The little girl said, looking at her with her bright, shining eyes, eagerly awaiting her response.

When Laurent saw the expression on her daughter’s face, she immediately knew what the little girl was thinking. And these words—she had definitely been taught to say them.

Before Laurent could respond, the little girl spoke again, her eyes full of pleading.

"Mom, can we ask Daddy to join us for dinner? It’s been so long since I had a meal with both you and Daddy."

Hearing her daughter say that, Laurent’s heart ached.

For a child, wanting to have a meal with both parents should be the most ordinary thing, but in a divorced family, it became something almost impossible to fulfill.

Laurent bit her lip, hesitating. She knew the little girl was just repeating what someone had told her to say, but she couldn’t bear to refuse.

And with the little girl still clinging to her neck and continuing to act cute,

"Mom, please, pretty please!"

Laurent finally relented.

"Okay."

It was just one meal, after all. She would treat it as their last dinner together, she supposed.

In fact, Laurent didn’t really understand. If Dave didn’t love her anymore, and they were already divorced, he should be eager to keep his distance from her, to sever ties. So why was he using their daughter to drag her back into his life?
