Chapter 68: Chapter 68- Who are you?

That evening, while Lilian was on a video call with her niece and Laurent, she couldn’t help but vent about Dave:

"Dave is really a stubborn person. He took care of Emma for a few days, got so tired that he handed her over to Mom, and then pretended to be too busy with a business trip to take care of her. But when I went out to dinner with some classmates that evening, I ran into him! It was so funny, I nearly died laughing."

Laurent knew that Dave had been taking care of his daughter. That night, when Lilian had gone over to Dave’s to help her daughter call Laurent, she found out about it.

She had thought Dave would only manage for one day, but to her surprise, he held out for several days.

As for Lilian’s complaints, Laurent just smiled. She knew how proud and image-conscious Dave was, and there was no way he would ever admit how tiring taking care of a child was.

"Next time he asks for my number, just give it to him," Laurent said after thinking for a while.

Over the past few days, she had calmed down and thought about a lot, especially the fact that Lilian had gone to Dave’s place late at night just to help her daughter call Laurent.

When they had just divorced, Laurent had appeared calm on the outside, but inside, she wasn’t. So she stubbornly changed her phone number and refused to keep in touch with him.

But after thinking about it, she realized that this not only caused trouble for Lilian and Tiffany but also made it inconvenient for her to stay in touch with her daughter. If her daughter was going to be with him often in the future, it would be unreasonable for her to continue avoiding contact.

Therefore, it was better to straightforwardly give him the phone number. If her daughter was with him, there would be no need to go through others to reach her.

Lilian, as always, listened to her, and agreed, but added,

"Let’s wait until he asks again. Haha, I’m not going to tell him first."

The next day, Dave arrived at Laurent’s house in the evening, having left before finishing work.

He parked his car in front of her small yard and took out the large suitcase he had packed the night before. As he stood there wondering what to say when he knocked on her door, he saw Alex walking toward him from a distance, holding a few items of groceries, apparently returning from the market.

Alex saw him too, and his face immediately darkened.

To be honest, Dave had always found Alex a bit of a headache because Alex had always shown nothing but hostility toward him.

Before the divorce, Alex had used Laurent’s affection for him to act with some degree of impunity.

But now that he and Laurent were divorced, and no one was there to speak up for him, Dave felt increasingly powerless in Alex’s presence. The night before, while telling his daughter a story, he had thought deeply from a father’s perspective. When facing Alex again, he suddenly realized how much of a jerk he had been—how he had bullied Alex’s daughter and trampled on her feelings.

Yet, despite all his inner turmoil, he had no choice but to walk up to Alex now.

"Alex—"

He greeted Alex politely.

Alex had originally gone to the market to buy some ingredients for dinner at Cassy’s request. But when he saw Dave, he immediately became furious.

Instinctively, he turned around, looking for something to hit him with, but then he remembered what his daughter had said last time—to pretend not to recognize him and ignore him, as that would make him suffer more.

So, he suppressed the urge to punch him, and instead, he casually walked toward Dave, holding his groceries.

When Dave greeted him, Alex stopped and gave him a sidelong glance.

"Who are you?"

"..."

Dave was a bit stunned, confused as he looked at Alex.

He didn’t understand why Alex suddenly asked him who he was. However, out of politeness, he still answered,

"I’m Dave—"

Just as he said his name, Alex cut him off abruptly, coldly stating,

"Don’t know you!"

Then, Alex moved to walk past him, intending to head home.

"Alex, don’t do this—"

Dave raised his hand to stop Alex.

What kind of person was Alex? After everything that had happened, how could he not understand? Alex was deliberately pretending not to recognize him, trying to embarrass him.

The moment Dave reached out to stop him, Alex’s anger flared up instantly. The last time, Alex had been unwilling to let it go, and now, to his surprise, Dave had come to him again.

With no tools nearby to hit him with, Alex swung the spring onions he had just bought at Dave, and, in the heat of the moment, he shouted angrily,

"What do you mean by that?"

"What’s wrong with me saying I don’t know you?"

"Don’t we have absolutely nothing to do with each other now? We’re divorced, so why do you keep showing up? What’s your real intention?"

Dave didn’t expect Alex to explode so quickly and with such intensity.

Before he could even react, Alex had already struck his upper arm several times.

"Alex!"

Just as Alex was about to continue, Cassy rushed out of the house and shouted at him,

"What are you doing?!"

Seeing Cassy, Alex took a step back and lowered the spring onions in his hand.

Cassy looked at Dave apologetically,

"Sorry, Mr. Washington, are you hurt?"

The moment Cassy addressed him as "Mr. Washington," Dave’s heart completely sank.

The last time he came to deliver Laurent’s luggage, her mother had called him Dave in a warm and friendly manner right at the doorstep.

This time, however, she addressed him as "Mr. Washington."

The distance between them was so obvious, so complete.

"It’s fine."

He forced a smile, then pointed to the suitcase next to his feet.

"There are some of Laurent’s things..."

He suddenly felt so down that he didn’t even want to speak anymore.

"Could you please give them to her? I’ll leave now."

With that, he turned around, got into his car, and drove away.
