You're Just My Ex-Husband,My Lord-Chapter 72-offer
At the end of the interview, Samantha told her to wait outside for the results. Once everyone had finished their interviews, they would discuss and make a decision on the candidates to hire on the spot, because Danny would be leaving for overseas next week and wouldn’t have time for a second round of interviews.
Laurent agreed and, after leaving the office, went to the small convenience store downstairs in the factory to buy a bottle of water. She drank it to help ease the intense nervousness she had felt during the interview and also took the opportunity to look around at the surroundings of the factory.
According to her father, the area surrounding the factory was a newly planned emerging industrial zone by the government in recent years. There were all kinds of factories around, and many of the factories that had previously been located in the city center had relocated here in response to national policies. As a result, the area looked quite bustling.
She thought that if she didn’t get the job at this factory, she could look around at other factories along the way to see if there were any suitable positions.
What she didn’t expect was that such a factory’s trade department would attract so many applicants, many of whom were graduates from reputable universities. She had thought that most college graduates would stay in big cities like the county seat, but it seemed that some had returned to their hometowns.
While she was waiting for her interview, she overheard two young women nearby lamenting how difficult it was for university graduates to find jobs now. That made her instantly realize why so many people were applying for this position.
She had spent the last few years staying at home, not looking for work or paying much attention to employment trends. She hadn’t realized how tough the job market had become in the five years since she had been away. It seemed like she was falling behind and would need to work even harder now.
After wandering around for a while, since there were so many interviewees and she had been one of the first, by the time she felt that the interviews were almost over and returned to the office building, more than half an hour had passed.
After the other interviewees had finished, they gathered in small groups, discussing things. Laurent also wanted to join in, but just as she was about to speak, her phone rang again.
She looked at the screen and saw that it was Dave calling. Instinctively, she hung up.
After their previous phone call, which ended on a sour note, she had no desire to talk to him, and frankly, she had nothing to say to him.
However, after hanging up, he immediately sent a text message:
"Send me the address of the factory you’re interviewing with."
Laurent stared at the message and suddenly had a bad premonition.
Could it be that he personally brought their daughter here?
Thinking this, she quickly called him back, and he answered the phone quickly. On her end, she was silently hoping that it wasn’t the answer she feared.
"What do you need the address for?" she asked.
"Emma said she wants to see you as soon as possible."
Laurent, "...!"
It really was him. If it had been the driver bringing their daughter, the person who contacted her would have been the driver, not Dave.
Then, she heard the sound of an animated song coming from the other end of the line. It was clearly her daughter listening to it; otherwise, why would a grown man be listening to such music?
This confirmed that he was with their daughter, and indeed, it was him who had come to drop her off. Laurent was at her wit’s end. Was he asking for trouble, after everything her father had done to him? How could he still dare to show up?
What’s more, he had chosen to come right at the time of her interview. Laurent thought to herself that it wasn’t that their daughter wanted to see her first, but that he probably wanted to see the miserable result of her failing the interview!
She replied curtly, "I don’t know when I’ll be finished here, so just take Emma to my place."
Thinking about how he had mocked her for being out of touch with society for five years with no work experience, Laurent didn’t want him bringing their daughter straight to her interview location.
If she succeeded in the interview, that would be fine, but if she failed, she couldn’t imagine how he would mock her. She was in the middle of trying hard to find a job and had no intention of letting him undermine her self-esteem and confidence with his cruel words.
Instead, he handed the phone to their daughter, saying, "She’ll come to find you herself. You can talk to her."
He completely shirked the responsibility.
Laurent had no choice but to deal with her daughter. The little girl just said that she hadn’t seen her in a long time and missed her very much, wanting to see her as soon as possible.
When Laurent heard the little girl say she missed her "so, so much," her heart instantly softened, and she gave Dave the address of the factory.
There was nothing she could do; she couldn’t resist her daughter.
She believed that what her daughter said was genuine because she, too, missed the little girl terribly.
After giving them the address, she hung up. Just then, Samantha came out, holding a list. She said that those whose names were called would go in for a brief second-round interview, and those whose names weren’t called were eliminated.
Laurent felt extremely nervous. She hoped that even if she wasn’t hired this time, at least she could get a chance for a second interview. She needed some confidence to continue her job search without feeling too defeated.
Luckily, her name appeared on the list for the second interview. She excitedly cheered herself on inside her head, saying "Laurent, you can do it, Laurent, you can do it."
The remaining candidates each went through a quick second-round interview, which mainly focused on questions about salary expectations and other practical matters. Laurent answered each question honestly and sincerely.
After the brief second-round interview, the factory director and manager discussed the results again, asking everyone to wait outside.
While waiting, Laurent received another message from Dave:
"We’ve arrived. Where are you?"
Laurent, nervously awaiting the interview results, had no mood to deal with him. She simply replied that she hadn’t finished yet, then put her phone on silent and continued to sit there, enduring the anxious wait.
About ten minutes later, Samantha finally came out to announce the results.
Laurent, along with another young woman named Maggie, who had just graduated, was selected. Laurent was overjoyed. She felt as though luck was still on her side. After her divorce, she had managed to find a job so smoothly. Wasn’t this a case of love life failing but career life succeeding?
The others who were eliminated all left, and only Laurent and Maggie remained. Danny, the factory director, welcomed them both and said he would treat them to a meal when he returned from his business trip before leaving.
Samantha stayed behind and said a few more words to the two of them, mentioning that it would be ideal for them to start on Monday. Laurent had no objections and was eager to start immediately, but Maggie hesitated, saying she needed to go home and pack things first, and it might be a few days before she could start.
Samantha looked at her but didn’t say much, only advising her to come in as soon as possible before leaving.
As soon as Samantha left, Maggie came over and linked arms with Laurent, complaining,
"Laurent, why did you agree to start Monday? Anyway, we’ve already got the job. We might as well enjoy a few more days before starting."
Since only the two of them had been hired and they had briefly introduced themselves earlier, Laurent felt they weren’t familiar enough to be so close. She wasn’t used to Maggie linking arms with her like this.
