Chapter 757: The Last Report

"Wake up, honey, it’s the morning already. You can sleep in tomorrow morning when it’s the weekend."

"Hm?"

As Xiaoyun slowly opened his eyes, Leyan was standing right beside the bed, with the clock pointed right at eight o’clock.

"You’re going to be late for work if you keep sleeping—"

"Okay, okay, I’m getting up."

The moment he sat up in bed, waves of soreness came straight from his legs and back as if he had done a serious workout last night.

"Leyan, can you help me get up the bed?

"Are you that tired?"

With a gentle hand pulling him up, Xiaoyun finally managed to get out of the bed as Leyan headed over to the closet afterward.

"You guys barely let me go last night, you tell me."

Seeing stretching his arm and yawning out loud, Leyan’s face blushed red as she started helping him put on his formal suit.

"You’re the one who suggested it... We were willing to wait til the weekend if someone didn’t say, ’Oh, I just feel like it.’"

As Leyan mimicked Xiaoyun’s voice at the end, he closed his eyes to avoid needing to face the embarrassment.

"Stop standing here expecting me to do everything for you, go brush your teeth yourself, and come downstairs for breakfast."

With the door closed, Xiaoyun opened up his eyes once again as he stood in his bedroom all alone.

"Tomorrow is the weekend... Fuck."

---

"Morning."

"Morning."

As Xiaoyun walked into the kitchen and took a seat next to Tianci, Leyan had already carried over his coffee mug.

"Are you that tired?"

Kate curiously asked, noticing the tired look on his face as opposed to everyone else’s energetic look at the table. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎

"Mhm... Easy for you to say."

The bitterness instantly sent a small rush of energy into Xiaoyun’s brain as he put the coffee mug back onto the table.

"Maybe you should just stay home for today," Yuqi suggested, her face looking a little red, thinking back to what happened last night.

"I’m fine... Leyan, where’s my breakfast?"

"Here it is."

With a bowl of noodles put in front of him, Xiaoyun quickly picked up the chopsticks and the bowl before ’chugging’ the noodles down.

"Slow down, there’s more in the kitchen. You don’t have to eat that fast." Leyan quietly murmured.

"Another one, please."

As Xiaoyun put the empty bowl back down, Leyan quickly sat back up again before getting him a new bowl of noodles from the pot.

"Shuli, let’s do a little bet. How many bowls of noodles do you think he’s going to eat?" Wuli suddenly asked.

"Um... Five bowls?"

"More like ten bowls."

Yuqi chimed in as she watched Xiaoyun chug a whole bowl of noodles down again before handing Leyan the empty bowl again.

After back and forth three different times, Leyan was starting to get a little annoyed, needing to get up every time he finished his bowl.

"Go get it yourself." Leyan declared as she refused to help Xiaoyun get his fourth bowl of noodles.

"Okay."

As Xiaoyun headed over to the stovetop, he could see that the pot itself had roughly five bowls of noodles left.

"Does anyone needs second?"

"You can have it all to yourself! Everyone already had their bowl on the table." Leyan responded out loud.

Just as Xiaoyun was about to pour himself a bowl of noodles, an idea popped into his head as he picked up the entire pot.

"Xiaoyun, what are you doing?" Yueyue curiously asked, noticing him walking towards the table with the entire pot.

"Saving myself extra work."

With the pot down on the table, everyone rolled their eyes as Xiaoyun started eating straight out of the metal pot.

Twenty minutes later...

"Bye, Mom."

"Bye."

As Leyan waved goodbye to Nami and closed the door, all of Xiaoyun’s wives were out of the house to work.

Except for Xiaoyun himself, who was still sitting at the table, chugging down more and more noodles that he had just created.

"Honey, are you that hungry?" Leyan worringly asked as she had watched him eat at least twenty bowls of noodles at this point.

"My body just feels hungry... Ahem, I’m good, now though."

Seeing him putting the pot and his chopsticks back down, Leyan let out a small sigh of relief as she was seriously thinking about bringing him to the hospital.

"Honey... if your body can’t handle it, just tell us next time, okay? Don’t try to act tough and disregard your body like this."

"Relax. I’m fine. Stop worrying over nothing."

As Xiaoyun dismissed her concern once again, Leyan didn’t say anything back other than to resume eating her own bowl of noodles.

"Anyway, I’m off to work now... You need anything from me?"

"Stop saying that."

"Okay, my bad... Muah! See you later tonight."

With a kiss on the cheek, Xiaoyun walked right out of the kitchen before seeing Lily sitting on the sofa watching TV.

"You going to work?" Lily curiously asked as she watched Xiaoyun grab his shoe from the shoe rack.

"Yeah."

"Wait."

Lily quickly got up from the sofa, walking over before standing right before him. As she tiptoed and struggled to reach his cheek, he couldn’t help but giggle.

"Hey, stop laughing—Mhm!"

Her voice was instantly interrupted as Xiaoyun kissed her right on the lips before turning around, opening the door, and waving goodbye.

"See you later."

"See ya."

---

"You’re ten minutes late, you know that?" Yuqi grumpily murmured as Xiaoyun walked straight into her office without knocking.

"If you just waited five minutes, both of us would have been here... Anyway, anything different today?"

As he took a seat right across from Yuqi, she rolled her eyes before handing him a little folder filled with paper inside.

"What’s this?"

"The last August report before everything transitions into a quarter system... The data had been harder and harder to get a full picture."

Yuqi’s answer didn’t really surprise him. In Xiaoyun’s mind, it was only a matter of time before the monthly report became inaccurate.

The level of information and data needed from the census department was increasing at an unsustainable pace as the population almost quadrupled in a year.

This was on top of the general population living more spread out in different cities and countless little towns in the countryside.

"So much lighter than usual..."

As Xiaoyun opened the first page, it was a general overview of the population, which had reached 6 million people, over the 4 million figure since the May report.

The next page was food storage, which was actually getting full for once, rather than the usual half-empty for the past few months.

"Yuq, you reading this? The food surplus is actually more than the population growth for once?"

"Yeah. Some good news for once." Yuqi murmured as she glanced over him for a second before turning back to her monitor.

Delving deeper, he soon finds the increase was a one-time jump, not a measured increase due to agricultural output increasing.

It was just a pre-outbreak food deposit found in Shenzhen and Dongguan, right in the middle of the two cities, inside a storage facility.

"Damn, that was a little anticlimactic."

"Read the whole thing first."

Seeing Yuqi’s face so cheered up, Xiaoyun continued as he opened to the third page, which provided the actual level of food production.

"Whoa. Are we actually measuring this much food for the harvest? And it’s all rice, not just short leafy green?"

"Mhm... The oil you brought was able to run the tractors year-round rather than just using manual labor."

A smile appeared on Xiaoyun’s face as he couldn’t help but feel optimistic about the future.

"With this much food, we are more than ready to accept even more migrants, aren’t we?" Xiaoyun questioned.

"Yeah. That’s what we’re doing already... Actually, I almost forgot to ask you this."

"What is it?"

"When are you helping those civilians living in Hunan to move over here? Didn’t you make a promise to the soldiers and the news?"

Xiaoyun froze for a second. His brain short-circuited as he dropped the report down onto the desk before him.

"Shit. I completely forgot about it."

"You serious?" Yuqi questioned, her face seemingly in disbelief and disappointment as she stared into his eye.

"I was too busy for the past few days. You know, going to meetings with all those department secretaries."

"Well, you’re the one who made the promise. You’d better deal with it yourself. I’m not going to clean up after your mess."

As Xiaoyun tried to soften her up, he hit a brick wall as Yuqi didn’t even bother looking in his direction.

"Fine, I’ll deal with this myself."

Yuqi didn’t stop him as she watched him step out of the office, leaving the report on the desk as she picked it back up.

"What do I need to do today?"

After putting the report away, she stared back at her empty monitor. All of the work that once required her to make the decision was now gone.

The only thing she needed to do was to read up on a few reports each department produces.

She didn’t need to micro-manage every single thing anymore. Soon, she started to get a little bored.

Looking down in the streets, Yuqi could see people walking busily through the streets, all heading to work or already working.

"Maybe I should pick up some hobby again..."
