Zombie Apocalypse: Creation-Chapter 766: Wuli’s Wild Adventure
As Saturday quickly flew right by, Xiaoyun’s nervousness had only increased every hour that gone by in Shaoguan.
There was no news from Wuli or anyone, for that matter. It was just radio silent as Henan province continued to be shrouded in mystery.
His mind was weighing the option to send in the army... until the news broke out.
Yiming’s guard was the first to notice it as an endless number of cars were entering Shaoguan’s northern entrances unannounced.
Buses, semi-trucks, and minivans all had pre-outbreak Hunan license plates that differed from those in Guangdong.
Anyone who saw it in the streets was shocked, as the entire road was jammed with cars with no end in sight.
"Yiming!"
As a young woman stepped out of the first car in the very front, all of the soldiers immediately walked up with their rifles up.
"Lieutenant Wuli, what are all these cars coming from? Are they all from Hunan province?"
Realizing the young woman was an officer, the guards quickly stepped back as their faces flinched a little in shock.
"Xiaoyun didn’t tell you? Actually, where is he at right now? Don’t tell me he’s already back in Luoping."
"He’s driving over—"
Before Yiming finished talking, a car traveling in the opposite direction to all the other cars stopped right next to the two of them.
None of the soldiers stopped it as the license plate showed it as a military vehicle. More importantly, they knew the person inside it.
"Afternoon, everyone." Xiaoyun waved as he stepped out of the car, along with Houqin following right behind him.
"Afternoon, sir!"
After a short salute with Yiming’s soldier, Xiaoyun finally turned his attention over to the endless number of cars in front of him.
"Wuli, how many people did you manage to bring out of Hunan province?"
"Almost the entire province. There’s even more willing to come down. We just need more vehicles to transport them."
"No one stopped you? What happened to the Jiangxi soldiers and those soldiers who switched sides?" Xiaoyun questioned.
Wuli wore her pride openly, head held high and eyes bright as the four of them walked over to the side.
"It’s a long story, I’ll explain it to you guys later. We should really get these people settled before anything."
As all four of them looked over to the road behind them, all of the cars that had entered the city were still jamming the road completely.
"I’ll call Yuqi to send reinforcement. Yiming, go meet with the police chief and tell him to find a place to hold them temporarily."
---
After working long hours for the entire afternoon, a sense of stability and peace was brought back to the city of Shaoguan.
All of the cars were gone as if they never been here. But the amount of tire marks on the road left an impression that spoke volumes.
"So, Wuli, how the hell did you manage to bring so many people out of Hunan? What kind of magic trick did you manage to pull off?" 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚
Yiming and Houqin both looked just as intrigued as Xiaoyun, their mind were both blown away as well by the sheer amount of vehicles still.
"Let me start from the beginning... So I was traveling down the highway from Shaoguan to Changsha."
Wuli pointed her finger along the map, stopping right at the road between the two cities, right near Changsha city.
"Before I could enter the city proper, I was stopped by a group of men from Xiangtan who looked like bandits.
They asked me what I was doing. I gave them the excuse of looking to trade with locals in Changsha.
They saw the guns we were carrying and chose to let us go... I was wondering how the hell are there bandits right near the city?"
As she moved her finger onto Changsha, she suddenly drew a whole circle all around the metropolitan area.
"It turned out those Jiangxi soldiers had long left Changsha. The soldiers who switched sides were the ones in control of the city now."
"Did they pose any challenges?" Xiaoyun curiously asked.
"Challenges? Not even in the slightest. We were let in with no check or anything. Some of them even asked if they could join the caravan."
Wuli paused for a second, then continued.
"Remember the bandits from earlier? They are the same soldiers who were supposed to be acting as guards for Changsha."
"What? What happened to its command structure? Where’s Major Sanxin?" Yiming questioned, looking a little shocked.
"Quite frankly, I’m not sure... Based on one of the bandit’s accounts, he apparently went towards the Jiangxi direction to meet with an emperor."
"Fuck... I’m really never going to get him."
"Ahem, what happened next?" Xiaoyun asked, bringing the conversation back on track as Yiming’s anger subsided.
"Um... Right, the bandit. They chose to let us into Changsha. We set up a hiring booth in the middle of the city center, just like the plan.
Everything was working out fine as we managed to gather hundreds of civilians who were willing to move with us back to Guangdong."
"This was all during the first day, right?"
"Nope. It’s just the morning of Saturday. By noon, the hundred people turned into thousands as the news spread like wildfire."
"Those bandits didn’t do anything?" Houqin finally spoke up.
"Nope, they were actually thankful for us taking people out since there had been a small food shortage in Changsha.
By the time evening arrived, we had well over ten thousand people in the city center. It’s more than we can transport, so we decided to send a small team back first.
That was when the first problem arose... We couldn’t actually get out of the city at all. People surrounded our minivans."
"Suffering from success, huh?" Xiaoyun murmured as he could feel a hidden flex from Wuli’s voice.
"It was really problematic. The entire street was filled with people wanting to leave with us."
Wuli answered as her tone turned serious, looking back at Xiaoyun with irritation as if he had misunderstood something.
"As we tried to leave multiple times, none of them let us go until the bandits came in to help us."
"Help you guys?" Yiming questioned, looking a little shocked once again.
"Yep. Those bandits took out all of their vehicles and put as many people as they could to let us come back to Shaoguan."
This time, the answer surprised both Xiaoyun and Houqin, as they couldn’t imagine why bandits would want to help them.
"What kind of ’bandits’ help you move people? Sounds like a bunch of misguided soldiers that just wanted to help." Xiaoyun questioned back.
"I haven’t finished yet... As we were traveling back in a large caravan, they suddenly stopped their car right in front of Hengyang city."
"Hengyang? Why there, out of all places?"
Yiming questioned, unable to understand their path, as the usual highway they took had always gone around the zombie-occupied city.
"Remember how I said their superior officer was gone, right?"
The three of them nodded, waiting for Wuli to continue.
"Turned out their 2nd in command came back from Jiangxi. They were ordered to drop all of the civilians and head back to Changsha."
"That’s leaving those civilians out to die in a warzone." Houqin immediately pointed out, her voice filled with anger.
"I know. That what’s I was thinking as well when I heard it from one of the bandits... But here’s the thing, half of those civilians turned out to be those bandits’ relatives.
It turned out these bandits had ignored my request to give priority only to bring relatives who had a relationship to Yiming’s soldier."
"They aren’t going abandon their relatives, didn’t they?" Xiaoyun questioned.
"Not a single one of them was willing to turn around. At this point, they were too far in to go back."
"Wait, how about the civilians that were left behind?"
Houqin raises her concern, realizing the transport limit Wuli still faces even with the bandit’s vehicles.
"Here’s the part why I called them bandits. Ahem, I shouldn’t have said they were too far in to turn around earlier.
They actually did turn around. They left their relatives for us to take care of while they headed back to Changsha.
We were actually ahead of schedule the whole time as well. If it weren’t for their extra trip, we would have been in Shaoguan Sunday morning."
"What did those men do in Changsha? You still haven’t explained the bandit part." Yiming questioned, his face looking disapproving of the former soldiers already.
"They went back and immediately locked up the 2nd in command. Then they robbed the entire inventory of vehicles to transport everyone out."
"You’re telling me you somehow subverted the enemy soldiers and made them switch sides again?"
Xiaoyun asked, his face genuinely looking a little impressed based on the achievement of Wuli’s account.
"You could say that. I think it was really just luck though... Or it could just be that Lingang had done such a good job as a propaganda machine."
"Lingang?"
All three of them were a little caught offguard by Wuli’s answer, as none of them expected his name to be brought up.
