Zombie Apocalypse: Creation-Chapter 773: Mayor Zhang
As the three of them finally arrived in Dongguan, Kate and Anna were both quickly picked up by their employee.
Meanwhile, Xiaoyun was stuck at the train station. He had no idea where to go, nor did he have a car to drive around in to begin with.
"Surely there’s a way somehow."
Looking at the map next to a nearby bus station, he soon found one that took him to the administrative building in Dongguan.
"I should have just driven here..."
Xiaoyun thought to himself that the longer he waited at the bus stop, the longer he started to regret getting on the high-speed rail.
"Mr.Governor, are you waiting for the bus?"
As a voice appeared from behind, Xiaoyun quickly turned around. It was a middle-aged man standing right behind him.
"Yeah. Just got off the train and was trying to meet the mayor... You’re waiting for the bus too?"
The middle-aged man shook his head as he proudly revealed his right shoulder, which had the word "Metro Police" badge on top.
"Oh, didn’t see that... Hope you have a good day of work today." Xiaoyun murmured as the bus finally arrived at the bus stop.
"You too."
Hopping into the bus, Xiaoyun took out cash this time, avoiding the need to take out his ID as he sat down in an empty seat.
"Everything looks almost the same..."
As the bus drove down the road, a flashback suddenly hit him in the head. Ones that were from far back in time.
All the way back when he was still Songming, straight out of university and struggling to turn the old man’s business around.
He spent half of his time on business trips outside of the Guangzhou headquarters to be in Dougguan.
It was the undisputed manufacturing hub of the South of his time, or even the entire world, for that matter.
All of his textile businesses were located in this city. To be more precise, the very southern part of the city, with the Pearl River in view.
"Wonder who had taken control over it... Or maybe it’s abandoned at this point."
Shaking the nostalgia feeling away, the scenery soon began to change as they reached deeper and deeper into the metropolitan area of Dougguan.
More and more people could be seen walking in the streets, with many of them wearing hard hats and reflective vests.
"Please exit through the rear door! Do not use the front entrance!" The driver yelled as the bus came to its first stop.
A few people got off through the rear door, but even more passengers soon filled the seats they left behind.
Not a single one of them was elderly, as all of them were young men or young women who spoke with a heavy Shaanxi accent.
"Hey man, sorry for asking this. But you look a little familiar." One of the men curiously asked as he stood right in front of Xiaoyun.
"I get that a lot... You’re probably mistaking me for someone famous or something." Xiaoyun answered.
The man didn’t question it any further as the bus trip went on smoothly until Xiaoyun finally reached his bus stop.
"Excuse me, I’m getting off."
After squeezing himself through the crowds, Xiaoyun made it out of the bus as he took a breath of fresh air.
"Geez, that was cramped... Maybe I should have taken the metro next time."
Xiaoyun murmured as he thought back to the metro station at one of the bus stops earlier, when it reached close to the city proper.
"Commander Xiaoyun, is that you?"
As a familiar voice appeared behind him, Xiaoyun immediately turned around. To his surprise, it was Lingang.
"Lingang? What are you doing here?"
"I was just about to meet with the mayor of Dongguan to ask how long they need the military for as police."
"That’s perfect timing. I came here to talk to the mayor as well."
The two of them didn’t hesitate, entering a similarly skyscraper office that had been set up as Dongguan’s administrative office.
Once inside the elevator, Xiaoyun suddenly noticed a weirdly nervous look on Lingang’s face as it went up closer and closer to the top floor.
"Lingang, you okay?"
"I’m fine, Command. Thank you for asking. I just had a little allergy recently." Lingang answered, brushing his nose a little.
As the elevator came to a stop, the two exited it and began walking through several empty office cubicles.
With a knock, the two waited outside. But after standing there for a whole minute, there was still no response.
"Lingang, this is the mayor’s office, right?" Xiaoyun questioned, as it was still his first time coming here.
"Yeah. I had personally met with the mayor last time here... That’s weird. Maybe she went outside to work on something."
"That’s going to be annoying... Actually, Lingang, do you know where people had been settling down in Dongguan?"
"Settling? As in moving into Dongguan?"
"Yeah."
"Hm... I think there had been some of them settling in the southern part of Houjie and Humen town.
The majority of them seem to be settling in Chang’an town, though. At least that’s what the majority of the soldiers had been reporting to be on duty at."
"Perfect... Crap, how do I get there?"
As the two of them stood outside the administrative building, Lingang quickly pointed to his car parked right outside.
"I can drive you, Commander. I got nothing else better to do anyway."
"You sure?" Xiaoyun questioned.
"I’m serious. There really isn’t much to do. There hasn’t been any zombie threat coming from any of the directions."
"Okay then. I’m going to let you be my driver for the day."
---
"There’s the mayor."
As Lingang suddenly stopped the car near a closed intersection, Xiaoyun immediately noticed the person who stood out from everyone.
It was a young woman in a formal suit standing in front of a stage, holding a megaphone in front of a massive crowd of people.
"They look a lot younger than I had imagined..." Xiaoyun murmured as he exited the car with sunglasses he made on the spot.
"The person on the stage is not the mayor. The other woman in the back is the mayor of Dongguan."
Lingang quickly pointed out as he pointed his finger towards the middle-aged woman backstage before following right beside him.
"Now that makes more sense... Ahem, let’s go check it out."
As Xiaoyun and Lingang started walking towards the crowds, several soldiers armed with rifles immediately started approaching them.
However, they stopped as soon as they saw their face. Even though they didn’t know who the sunglasses man was, Lingang alone was enough for them.
"Hey, man, what’s happening here?" Xiaoyun asked as he pulled one of the civilians’ arms within the crowd.
"It’s the job fair today."
"Everyone, please pay attention to the booth’s title board, and only go to the one that you have experience or a previous degree in.
Do not waste the recruiter’s time. Anyone who attempts to cause a scene will immediately be arrested and thrown out of Dongguan."
After the young woman with the megaphone spoke out loud, the military men who had been holding the crowds off finally moved aside.
Within seconds, the entire open road that had hundreds of different booths began rapidly filling up with lines upon lines of people.
"Remember, single file line and do not attempt to cheat. There are always more opportunities in the other booths here."
Walking down the open street, the two of them could see various kinds of booths hosting different kinds of job fairs.
From chefs to construction to government jobs to even the army, there were endless recruiters interviewing people in their booths.
"General Lingang, what brought you here?"
As a middle-aged woman approached them, Lingang looked over to Xiaoyun, who remained silent.
"I came here to ask when you are done with my soldiers. I need a date to put on the military records."
"At least a month or two." The Dongguan mayor answered.
"A month or two? That’s way too long. The Shenzhen mayor told me it was only supposed to be 2 weeks." Lingang immediately argued back.
"Things happen outside of our control. None of us expected half a million refugees to come to settle in Dongguan and Shenzhen."
Lingang flinched a little before holding down the urge to speak out loud as he lightened up his tone.
"I’m going to need an extended authorization paper from the army. If they refused, I’m going to be forced to recall them next week."
"That paper will be on your desk by tomorrow morning. You don’t have to worry about that."
With the reassurance given, Lingang had no choice but to stomach it down. However, to the Dongguan mayor’s confusion, he just stood there.
"Is there something else you want to talk about, General?"
"Mister, do you want to go now?"
Lingang asked as he looked over to Xiaoyun, whose eye had been blocked off with the sunglasses.
"I want to ask you about something, Miss Mayor. Are you confident that you can resettle everyone who moved here?"
"Of course I can. I had been working for years in the government. know how to deal with this kind of issue."
"I see... Thank you for your answer. Keep up the good work."
As Xiaoyun turned around, Lingang quickly followed right behind as they headed back over towards the other side of the open streets.
"Mayor Zhang! Who was that person earlier?"
A young woman curiously asked as she walked over to the mayor with a loudspeaker that had been turned off.
"General Lingang and... someone who sounds a little familiar."
