Chapter 148: Bringing up old scores

Meng Yunhan was stupefied. She was just helping the family by taking care of the evil spirit. How come she was suddenly being asked to divorce? No, she could not divorce; if she were divorced, then she was worried that her life would be ruined. Yun Xinye was still married to his wife, and he was not in a stable situation. His company was not doing well, and he could not give her a decent life. So how could she get a divorce?

Though Han Ruochen was correct about a countless number of things, there was one thing that she was wrong about. Her mother was a lot of things, but she was not a fool when it came to her own selfish benefits. The second she realised that her mother-in-law was going to make Han Yichen divorce her, her eyes turned wide with disbelief and ignoring the pain in her cheeks, she questioned angrily, "What do you mean? I have given birth to five children for your son, and you want him to divorce me? What wrong have I even done?"

When Old Madam Han heard her words, she was so angry that she almost slapped the woman to death. It was through sheer willpower that she was able to stop herself or else she was worried that she might have really sent this woman to her early grave. While trying to control her hand from slapping Meng Yunhan, Old Madam Han said to her, "You did nothing wrong? Then who was the one who doused my granddaughter in dog blood? Who was the one who used all of my son’s savings on her maternal family? Apart from being unfaithful, what else have you not done?"

Meng Yunhan stiffened when she heard the words of Old Madam Han. Even though she knew that no one knew what she had done, she still felt a bit guilty just thinking about what she had done. Thus, Meng Yunhan couldn’t help but jump like a cat on a hot roof when she was questioned by Old Madam Han, "Why must you insult me in such a manner? Sure, I made some mistakes, but I was only doing this because I was worried about this family. I was just thinking of us. If Han Ruochen was really possessed by an evil spirit—"

"Enough!"

Han Yichen finally had enough of his wife’s nonsense. He walked over to her and stated in a harsh, cold voice, "Don’t forget that Ruochen’s surname is Han and not Meng. Do not try to use your family methods on my daughter!"

It was bad enough that Meng Yunhan had humiliated and made their family a laughing stock; she had even hurt his daughter’s heart. When he realised that Meng Yunhan and Han Ziyan actually hoped that Han Ruochen would be beneath Han Ziyan all her life, and even as her mother wished that Han Ruochen could never surpass Han Ziyan, Han Yichen did not know what to think of the current situation.

Though Meng Yunhan was quite selfish, she was quite understanding and kind when they first married. But after she brought Han Ziyan home, the woman turned quite selfish and petty. He did not want to blame Han Ziyan, but at that moment, he couldn’t help but blame the woman for the trouble.

It was one thing that his wife doted on Han Ziyan, but the fact that she treated his daughter as if she had been picked up from the streets made Han Yichen really furious. Who did she think she was? He wanted to ask his wife how she could be so shameless. But instead of accepting that she was in the wrong, his wife was doing all kinds of nonsense to make Han Ziyan feel better.

What was this luck they were even talking about?

Meng Yunhan’s face turned pale; this was the first time she had been treated like this. Ever since she had married into the Han family, Han Yichen had supported and protected her. Thus, even if her mother-in-law had a lot of issues with her, she did not dare to show any animosity publicly. At least she would hold her tongue in front of Han Yichen.

But this time around, Han Yichen actually stood up against her!

"How dare you, Han Yichen! I will fight with you!" Meng Yunhan had never been humiliated like this before. Not only was she slapped, but even her bad deeds were unravelled one after another in front of her neighbours. Now she might never be able to act arrogantly in front of the wives of the fishermen living near her. In the past, she often acted and pretended to be smug in front of the rest of the wives, but never did she think that she would one day face such a thing.

Han Yichen did nothing to defend himself as he dragged his wife inside the house; they had given enough gossip to the villagers.

Han Ruochen sighed. Though she also wished her father would divorce her mother, she knew that the chances of that happening were close to none. Even though her father was disappointed in her mother, he was quite a savvy man. He would not divorce her for something like this. At most, he would teach her how to act, but that was all he was going to do. After all, what her mother had done still counted as a petty crime and nothing serious.

As long as there was no serious harm done, her father would never divorce her mother, as it was frowned upon in society.

It seems like I was in too much of a hurry, Han Ruochen thought as she walked inside the house, leaving the hustle and bustle behind. She did not care what the rest of the villagers were talking about, as she was not the one who would be gossiped about. It was her mother who was going to suffer the burn of the villagers’ mighty long tongues.

Crash!
