Chapter 77: Tong Zhaodi

Zhai Muchen also noticed the subtle changes in Old Madam Han’s expression and understood that there was something wrong with the Han family, but he was neither a close relative nor a friend, so he couldn’t ask anything. Zhai Muchen stayed at the Han family house for ten minutes, discussed a few things with Old Madam Han and then stood up on his feet.

Looking at his watch, he said to Old Madam Han, "I should get going now, Grandma. There are a few things that need my attention in the army."

When Han Ruochen heard his words, she almost rolled her eyes. Did this man not know that he was needed in the army till now? Looking at the man in front of her, Han Ruochen felt a bit torn. A part of her, one that she had inherited from her grandmother, still very much respected Zhai Muchen, but at the same time, the part that was still tied to her past made her feel rather wary and disgusted over Zhai Muchen’s presence.

"Ruochen, see our guest off, will you?" Of course, Old Madam Han had no such thoughts in her head. Instead, when she saw Han Ruochen standing next to Zhai Muchen, she thought that the two of them looked like a match made in heaven. But she dared not act too presumptuously, as Zhai Muchen and the Zhai family were way too out of their league.

What a shame. If only her old man were allowed to join the army, then he, too, could have followed the same path as Old Master Zhai. And now that the Han family was like an empty shell, who would dare to marry her granddaughter? Just thinking about this made Old Madam Han’s head buzz. In the end, it was her useless son who dragged her granddaughter down. With her beauty and wits, what kind of man couldn’t Han Ruochen have won?

Han Ruochen had no idea what her grandmother was thinking; she followed Zhai Muchen out of the house all the way to his car. Her gaze followed the tall man, and Han Ruochen couldn’t help but click her tongue. She had to admit that Zhai Muchen was really handsome. Even with a buzzcut, he looked like a man who had walked out of an ethereal-looking painting.

"Thank you for your hospitality, Miss Han." Zhai Muchen suddenly turned around and caught Han Ruochen staring at him. His lips unconsciously turned up while Han Ruochen’s face flushed red. She looked at the man in front of her and glared at him. This man did it deliberately!

However, she still maintained her manners and said, "I should be the one thanking Commander Zhai for bringing me back home."

Zhai Muchen flashed a grin. He bowed down and offered her his card before saying to her, "I heard from Grandma Han that you are rather lucky when catching seafood. If you catch something fascinating, then you can contact me at this number. I promise to pay you a price higher than the one at the market."

After he finished handing the card, Zhai Muchen swiftly got into the car and drove away without giving Han Ruochen a chance to hand him his card back or refuse. When Han Ruochen saw the man driving away, she was so mad that she rolled her eyes more than ten times. Nonetheless, she still pocketed the card. Since the man had said so, she had no intention of not taking advantage of him.

However, just as Han Ruochen turned on her feet and was about to head back inside, she heard a round of curses coming from the house next to her grandmother.

A second later, a thin and frail figure was thrown out.

"Zhaodi!"

Han Ruochen recognised the figure right away and rushed toward her. She caught Tong Zhaodi in her arms and helped her up,

"Ruochen?" Tong Zhaodi, whose face was black and blue, was having trouble recognising the person in front of her. She was beaten so hard that she was a bit disoriented and could not see clearly. She looked up at Han Ruochen and frowned a little.

Seeing her in this condition, Han Ruochen was so furious that she wished she could rush inside the Tong family house and beat Aunt Tong up. Unlike her, who was suffering because of her mother’s foolish one-sided love affair, Tong Zhaodi was suffering because of her mother’s unbridled attitude.

It was said that when Aunt Tong was pregnant with Tong Zhaodi, the woman ended up giving birth to Tong Zhaodi after she slipped and fell on the boat. After Tong Zhaodi was born, it was as if the Tong family was riddled with all kinds of trouble; not only did the head of the family break his leg and become half a cripple, but their catch also started to get less and less.

Because of this, the Tong family, especially Aunt Tong, who suffered while giving birth to Tong Zhaodi, hated her.

"Are you okay? Why were you beaten up again?" Naturally, Han Ruochen couldn’t barge inside and beat someone up, so she could only help Tong Zhaodi up.

"I ate a piece of meat," Tong Zhaodi replied softly. She was cooking for the family and felt really hungry. So, she sneaked a piece of meat into her mouth. Unfortunately for her, she was seen by her younger brother, who then went to tattle to their parents, and that was how she was beaten up.

"Just a piece of meat, and they beat you up like this? I thought that you stole gold or silver from your family to be beaten up like this." Han Ruochen glared at Tong Si, who ducked his head down.

It was not that he feared Han Ruochen, but his heart couldn’t help but beat wildly when he saw Han Ruochen glaring at him with those beautiful phoenix eyes of hers. He touched the spot where his heart was and then glanced at Han Ruochen, who was taking his sister away. Truly, Han Ruochen was really the beauty of their village.
