Reborn In The 90's: Saving My Siblings With A Fishing System
Chapter 80: Dignity? We Have None of That
Old Madam Han cooked a simple meal of rice, egg drop soup and sauerkraut fish. She didn’t have many resources in the fridge, and with her second daughter-in-law living with her, she didn’t dare to use all the meat and fish as she liked. After all, she still had to take a look at her daughter-in-law’s face.
But even this simple meal was quite lavish for Tong Zhaodi. She and her elder sister had never gotten a chance to eat such good things. Her parents often tell her that she and her sister were money-losing goods and that they were of no use to their family. Thus, they should work hard for their younger brother and get married to fetch a high bride price. Her elder sister was the same; she was made to work from morning to night, and then she was married off to a faraway village for a high bride price.
Tong Zhaodi, who was not allowed to study, knew that her fate was the same. Thus, she worked from morning till night and never confronted her parents, who gave her thin watery porridge to eat.
Now looking at such a good meal, Tong Zhaodi couldn’t help but feel scared. She raised her head and looked at Old Madam Han. "Grandma Han, can I really eat this?"
She was worried that she would be beaten if she ate these things.
Even though fish was cheaper than meat, her mother still never allowed her to eat any. Could she really eat it?
"Why else would I cook so much food if not for you eating with us?" Old Grandma Han rolled her eyes; nonetheless, she still picked two pieces of fish and placed them on top of Tong Zhaodi’s rice. "Make sure to eat as much as you want. I don’t want you to waste any rice."
Though Old Grandma Han’s voice was rude, Tong Zhaodi knew that the woman only meant well. This was the first time someone had treated her so well. Her eyes turned red, but she didn’t dare to shed any tears and started eating.
Han Ruochen and Old Madam Han exchanged a look with one another. The two of them looked right away, as they were worried that Tong Zhaodi would start thinking too much.
"Han Ruochen, thank you," after dinner, Tong Zhaodi bowed her head in gratitude. She said to Han Ruochen, "I promise that I will work hard and make sure that you will not waste your money on me."
Tong Zhaodi was really grateful. This was the first time someone had treated her so warmly.
"There is no need to put so much pressure." Han Ruochen waved her hand and stopped Tong Zhaodi from formally bowing to her. In her two lifetimes, this was the first time someone was bowing in front of her other than her students. She said in a light-hearted voice, "You just help me around—whether or not we have a good harvest, we will talk about it later on."
Tong Zhaodi nodded and then turned around to hurry back home. She was worried that if she didn’t return home, her mother would start beating her again for starting the preparation of dinner late.
Han Ruochen watched the woman go and shook her head before returning home. However, just as soon as she returned home with Han Beijiang, a figure darted toward her and started patting her from head to toe. This time, her mother was even more ruthless than the last time and started tearing her clothes, that too at the threshold of the house, with the door wide open!
"Dad!"
Han Ruochen didn’t even want to bother talking with the woman. Because even if she tried to stop her, there was a very good chance that Meng Yunhan was not going to stop. So she might as well not even try to call her father.
"What? What is going on?" Since Meng Yunhan couldn’t cook, Han Yichen was the one doing the cooking. When he stepped out of the kitchen, he saw Meng Yunhan tugging and pulling Han Ruochen again, and this time around, she was even tearing her clothes and that too with the door open and everyone from the neighbourhood watching.
Han Jianyou also came down, and when he saw the actions of his mother, he was speechless. He looked at his mother and then turned his attention to his sister, who was standing there with her clothes half torn and a calm and indifferent look on her face. It was as if she were used to such a thing. How many times did their mother insult his sister for her to have such a look on her face?
"Mom, what are you doing? Just look outside! So many people are watching; if words get out, how will sister survive?" Han Jianyou was feeling sorry for his sister, but Meng Yunhan didn’t seem to be worried at all. She continued pulling, and just as she tore away the pocket on Han Ruochen’s shirt, along with the fabric, Han Yichen pulled her away and shouted, "Jianyou, shut the door!"
Han Jianyou rushed down and then closed the door behind Han Ruochen just as Han Yichen pulled his wife away from Han Ruochen. He was furious at the actions of the woman and said to her, "Have you lost your mind? How can you do such a thing? It seems like you really take my words as a fart. I told you, I told you to treat my daughter with respect! Is this what you mean by respect"?
"Where is the money!?" Meng Yunhan didn’t care about anything. After the dust settled, Han Ziyan came to look for her and told her that since Han Ruochen had sold her job, she must have sold it for at least two thousand yuan. As long as they had that money in their hands, they wouldn’t have to worry about anything for a while. She even told her mother that Father Yun needed some investment for the company, which was exactly two thousand yuan. No wonder Meng Yunhan went crazy!
