Reborn with a Space: Hoarding Food and Raising My Kid
Chapter 158 - 146: Bloody Isolation Room
The nights in the safe zone were especially quiet, particularly here in the quarantine room. Perhaps the soundproofing was good, as not a single sound from the outside could be heard.
Even for a superpower user like Flora Bloom, whose spiritual power far exceeded that of ordinary users, she could only hear a faint rustling sound from outside.
The eight people, shrouded in a water mist that blocked all the cameras, had been warned by Flora Bloom to be vigilant shortly after they arrived, so none of them had fallen asleep.
A short while later, the JINGLE and CLANG of a lock being picked came from outside the women’s quarantine room door, followed by the faint footsteps of three people.
The instant the three men opened the door, Flora Bloom dispelled the water mist and exchanged a look with Shauna Wallace.
"Gentlemen, what brings you here so late? I don’t think our quarantine period is over yet, is it? If we turn into zombies, wouldn’t you be out of luck too?"
The three men who entered were the same ones who had brought them here that morning. One was short and fat, one was tall and skinny, and the third was a hunchback. All three were a motley, ugly crew with no superpowers. Since the establishment of this base, they had harmed an unknown number of defenseless women and girls in the quarantine rooms.
The short, fat man was the leader. With a sanctimonious expression, he sized up Flora Bloom and Shauna Wallace, clasped his hands behind his back, and said, "We’re here because there’s been an incident! Out of a sense of responsibility to everyone, we’ve stayed up this late to resolve the issue!"
"What incident? We’ve been staying right here and haven’t gone anywhere. What could have happened?" Selina stood up, clutching her stomach in confusion. ’The quarantine is almost over,’ she thought, ’what are these people doing here now?’
Jade pulled Flora Bloom to her side and whispered, "Flora, I don’t think these men are good people. We shouldn’t bother with them."
Flora Bloom patted her mother’s hand. "Mom, don’t be afraid. I can handle this. Just do as I say in a little bit!"
"What are you whispering about over there! According to our observations, two of you eight may have been infected with the zombie virus. We need to conduct a special examination and quarantine on them." The short, fat man pointed at Flora Bloom and Shauna Wallace. "You, Flora Bloom, and you, Shauna Wallace. The two of you stay. The rest of you, go outside. Someone will take you to another quarantine room to continue your isolation."
"What? Infected? Impossible! How could my daughter be infected? Sir, I think you must be mistaken." Jade knew her daughter’s secret; as a superpower user, her chance of infection was even lower than an ordinary person’s.
"That’s right, Sister Flora can’t be infected." The little loli, Lisa, stepped forward to stand in front of Flora Bloom, trying to look fierce but failing to notice she just looked adorable.
Lisa’s adorable face, combined with her defiant "we’re not leaving" stance, made the short, fat man’s eyes narrow as he stared her up and down for a long moment.
"Little loli, you’ve been close to them. I suspect you might be at risk of infection too. You can stay behind as well."
"Hurry up, hurry up! If the check-up shows no problems, you can leave the quarantine room after sunrise. The more you dawdle, the more likely it is that none of you will get to leave!"
After speaking, the hunchbacked man reached for Jade’s arm, intending to push and pull her out the door.
Flora Bloom grabbed the hunchback’s wrist with one hand. Eyes narrowing, she gave him a humorless smile. "We’re not too familiar with the rules here, so please don’t mind us, sirs. They’ll leave right away and won’t hold you up."
With that, Flora Bloom looked at her mother. "Mom, take the others and go outside first. I’ll be right there. Don’t worry!"
Although Jade was worried, the strength and wisdom her daughter had shown recently convinced her to trust her.
Seeing that the five had all left, leaving only the three women behind, the tall, skinny man immediately shut the door and returned to the short, fat man’s side.
When Flora Bloom saw the door being locked from the inside, she suddenly looked up at the three men and smiled.
"So, gentlemen. How would you like us to cooperate with this ’examination’?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
The short, fat man burst out laughing, the flesh on his face trembling with mirth.
"The little lady knows the score."
Flora Bloom laughed along with him, a sinister sound. Yet, on her fair, clean, and beautiful face, any strange expression looked fresh and charming.
"Of course. I know you three gentlemen are just looking out for us, and for the safety of the base. So, do you need us to take off our clothes for the examination?"
The three men were now completely focused on Flora Bloom, their eyes roving over her fair, delicate face. They were so engrossed they failed to notice that a thick, white water vapor was already starting to envelop them all within the quarantine room.
"It’s best that you understand. Who says the young ones aren’t reasonable? See? Our little flower girl is very cooperative!"
The three men swaggered smugly toward the three women.
Shauna Wallace’s brow furrowed tightly as the hunchback approached her. Lisa felt extremely uncomfortable as the tall, skinny man stood before her, leering.
Only Flora Bloom kept her smile, backing away step by step. Just as the short, fat man quickened his pace to close in on her, an axe with a metallic gleam appeared in her hand.
The candle, which had already burned down to its base, flickered out at that exact moment. A THUD, the sound of an object hitting the ground, echoed in the room, and a splash of warm liquid landed on the hunchback’s face.
The hunchback touched his face, the wet, hot, and sticky liquid sending a chill down his spine. The next second, a sharp blade with a metallic sheen flashed before his eyes. Before he could even react, he felt a cold sensation on his neck and lost consciousness forever.
The tall, skinny man seemed to realize something was wrong, but he couldn’t see anything in the darkness. He asked...
"Boss? Hunchback? What’s going on?"
The quarantine room had no windows; once the door was shut, it was a sealed chamber. His voice echoed in the empty room, but no one answered.
"They’ve gone to a better place, of course. And they’re just waiting for you to join them."
"What?" In the instant the tall, skinny man was startled, his skull was split open and he fell to the ground.
Shauna Wallace had vaguely seen everything that happened in the dark from start to finish. Superpower users could eventually evolve to have night vision, but it wasn’t as pronounced at lower levels—their eyesight just became better.
But Lisa, being an ordinary person, stood rooted to the spot, not even realizing what had happened until it was all over.
"Lisa, are you scared?" Flora Bloom suddenly asked. Although Lisa looked to be fifteen or sixteen, the fearless air she had when she stood protectively in front of her earlier was proof that this little girl had a lot of courage.
"I’m not scared. But... did something happen?"
Flora Bloom walked to the main door, smashed the lock open with her axe, and then kicked the door open.
Although it was night, the natural light from the hallway was enough for Lisa to see the scene before her.
Two heads lay on the floor of the quarantine room, a lonely and grotesque sight. Although the tall, skinny man’s head was still attached, his forehead had been crushed out of shape, his brains splattered.
The floor was covered in blood.
As the fresh air from the hallway hit her, Lisa finally smelled the metallic scent of blood inside the room. A tingling numbness spread across her scalp for a moment, but she clenched her fists, bit down on her back teeth, and endured it.
Flora Bloom glanced back at the bloody, gruesome scene in the quarantine room, the corners of her mouth lifting slightly. Seemingly in a good mood, she said, "Let’s go. We’ll find my mom and the others."
