He led Jiang Jinyou out of the shack and over to the log pile.

By then, quite a few haulers were already driving their sleds back to the logging camp, pulling loads of timber. They were all unloading the wood onto the log pile.

Seeing Jiang Jinyou and Zhao Jun approach, all the workers were a little surprised. It was no secret that the Du Brothers had been wanting to deal with Jiang Jinyou for a while now, but no one expected him to have teamed up with the new technician.

Unfortunately, everyone could see that this young new technician probably didn’t have any powerful backing. He likely wouldn’t be able to stand up to Du Chunjiang.

But Liu Hanshan was different. He knew where Zhao Jun came from. He began to slowly edge away from the crowd, but just as he was about to turn and leave, he saw Zhao Jun look over at him.

Seeing Zhao Jun give him a slight shake of the head, Liu Hanshan quickly bobbed his head up and down like a chicken pecking at grain, then obediently went off to the side to work.

Just then, a man drove up on a horse-drawn sled. Once it stopped, Du Chunlin shouted, "A couple of you, come unhitch this for me."

Du Chunlin’s words carried weight. At his command, several of the nearby Gui Ling workers rushed forward to help.

Du Chunlin put away his horsewhip and had just turned around when he saw Zhao Jun approaching with Jiang Jinyou.

Du Chunlin didn’t care about Jiang Jinyou, but the moment he saw Zhao Jun, he felt something was off.

"Du Chunlin," Zhao Jun said, looking at him and using his full name.

"Huh?" Du Chunlin froze. ’This young technician has some nerve,’ he thought. ’This morning he was calling me Brother Du, so why is he using my full name this afternoon?’

Zhao Jun didn’t care what he was thinking. He just asked, "These logs of yours, which lot number did you pull them from?"

"L-Lot 3," Du Chunlin answered. He couldn’t lie about this. All the trees on the mountain were state property, and lying about where you hauled them from was useless. It would only lead to big trouble.

Zhao Jun shot him a sideways glance and asked, "Isn’t Lot 9 the one assigned to you?"

"Ah." Du Chunlin was surprised. ’This is the technician’s first day,’ he thought. ’How does he know I was assigned Lot 9?’

But when he saw Jiang Jinyou, he figured that Jiang Jinyou must have snitched to Zhao Jun.

He wasn’t worried, though. He had faith in his second brother, Du Chunjiang.

But in the next second, Zhao Jun raised his hand, pointed at him, and said, "You..."

He’d only gotten that one word out before he shifted his finger, pointing to the logs Du Chunlin had just hauled back. He finished, "...all the logs you hauled today don’t count."

"What?" Du Chunlin stared at Zhao Jun in disbelief.

Zhao Jun met his gaze and said, "I don’t care how many logs you hauled from Lot 3 today. You did it for nothing."

"On what grounds?" Du Chunlin’s eyes widened as he demanded an answer.

Zhao Jun didn’t back down an inch. "On the grounds that I’m the inspector. I’m putting all these logs you hauled on my Brother Jiang’s tally."

"Your Brother Jiang..." Du Chunlin started to say more, but then he remembered Zhao Jun’s words—"On the grounds that I’m the inspector"—and immediately spun around and stalked toward the Leader’s shack.

All the surrounding workers, whether they were performing Gui Ling or hauling sleds, began whispering amongst themselves, a buzz of discussion filling the air.

In the crowd, only Liu Hanshan sighed quietly. He knew the Du Brothers had run into a tough customer today.

Inside the Leader’s shack, Du Chunjiang laughed after hearing Du Chunlin’s story.

"Second Brother," Du Chunlin said anxiously. "That young technician is walking all over us, why are you laughing?"

"I’m laughing because he’s a fool." Seeing Du Chunlin’s confusion, Du Chunjiang explained, "What good does it do him, deciding whose tally it goes on? At the end of the day, don’t I still have to be the one to pay you all? And since he’s already offended Xu Baoshan, where else is he going to go to complain about us?"

"You’re right!" Du Chunlin slapped his thigh and laughed. "He almost had me fooled. We can just ignore him, then."

"No, we can’t do that," Du Chunjiang said with a smirk. "He dared to act wild on my turf. I have to teach him a lesson." With that, Du Chunjiang grabbed his hat, put it on, and walked out, with Du Chunlin following close behind.

「Meanwhile, a truck drove into No. 77 Logging Camp.」
