After Being Cheated On, I Became My Ex's Uncle's Pampered Sweetheart
Chapter 127: The Old Master Found Out About Their Relationship
The moment Julian Lawson finished speaking, Charlotte Vaughn stared at him in shock. "What do you mean?" she asked.
Lana Chambers also hurried over. "Yes, Julian, what do you mean ’temporarily postpone’? The invitations have already been sent out!"
Julian Lawson didn’t want to tell them he hadn’t forgotten Eve Vaughn, so he made an excuse. "I... I think I might have a fear of commitment. I’ve been so anxious lately I can’t sleep. I want to see a therapist, and once I’ve dealt with this psychological issue, I’ll marry you."
Charlotte Vaughn and Lana Chambers exchanged a glance, looking at him suspiciously.
They clearly didn’t believe his story.
Julian suddenly grabbed Charlotte Vaughn’s hand, his tone almost pleading. "Charlotte, just think of it as doing me a favor. Besides, you can use this time to keep polishing your acting skills. I don’t want you to give up your acting career for me. I can help you get into the best acting schools abroad and send you to study."
Julian Lawson had thought this show of sincerity would be enough to move Charlotte Vaughn.
After all, Charlotte Vaughn was usually so gentle and considerate toward him. She didn’t seem like the type to be unreasonable.
But to his surprise, after he finished speaking, Charlotte Vaughn’s expression turned cold, and she snatched her hand away from his.
"Julian Lawson, you’re taking this too far!" Charlotte Vaughn was already fuming from her audition, and her only comfort was that she was about to marry into the Lawson Family.
Who would have thought that with their wedding just around the corner, Julian Lawson would make such a request?
He actually wanted to call off the wedding!
Charlotte Vaughn gritted her teeth and said, word by word, "I will not agree to postpone the wedding! Not unless you give me a reason that can convince me. Some psychological issue? Let me tell you, I don’t believe a single word of it!"
With that, Charlotte Vaughn angrily pushed him away and ran out of the house.
Julian Lawson stood frozen, sighing deeply. It seemed he had no idea what to do either.
Lana Chambers, terrified her daughter wouldn’t be able to marry into the Lawson Family, quickly asked, "Julian, did our Charlotte do something wrong to upset you? You can tell me, and I’ll have a good talk with her. But a wedding is a major life event; it’s not something to be trifled with! Your parents probably wouldn’t agree to this, would they?"
Julian Lawson had heard too many lectures lately and really didn’t want to listen to anyone else’s persuasion.
So, he said coldly, "Charlotte didn’t do anything wrong. It’s my problem. But I still hope you can persuade her. I really can’t go through with this wedding right now."
...
After leaving the house, the more Charlotte Vaughn thought about it, the more something felt wrong. ’Why would Julian Lawson suddenly not want to get married?’
’There’s definitely something fishy going on!’
She found the driver who usually drove for Julian Lawson and asked about his recent whereabouts.
At first, the driver was unwilling to tell her.
So Charlotte Vaughn threatened him. "You should know who I am, right? Julian Lawson is your boss, which means I’ll be your boss’s wife! If you cross me, I can have our Julian fire you at any time!"
"No, no, Miss Vaughn, I wouldn’t dare." The driver thought about how Charlotte Vaughn was indeed about to become his boss’s wife, a person he absolutely could not afford to offend.
So, he said cautiously, "Alright, I’ll tell you. But you must not let Mr. Julian know I was the one who told you."
"Hurry up and talk!" Charlotte Vaughn pressed.
The driver recalled Julian Lawson’s schedule over the past while and said, "Lately, Mr. Julian has been going to the office every day, but what’s different from before is that he’s been going to Rivaster University more frequently. A few days ago, he even went looking for a girl, and when she ignored him, he fainted and was taken to the hospital."
"What?"
Charlotte Vaughn had a sudden realization. Who else at Rivaster University could Julian Lawson possibly be so obsessed with?
It didn’t take a genius to know it was Eve Vaughn.
She clenched her fists so tightly she didn’t even feel the pain of her nails digging into her palms.
All her anger surged up, ready to burst from her chest.
Charlotte Vaughn wanted to kill Eve Vaughn!
She took a deep breath, and after calming down, she told herself, ’Why should I get my own hands dirty to get rid of Eve Vaughn?’
’After all, I have evidence that could ruin Eve Vaughn forever!’
At this thought, a sinister smile curved her lips, and she drove toward the Lawson family’s old residence.
...
It was still during work hours, so only Old Mr. Lawson was at the family home.
Old Mr. Lawson had only met Charlotte Vaughn once before, back when she was lying in the hospital, pretending she had donated her liver to Julian Lawson.
The old man had personally gone to thank her, and Julian Lawson’s mother, Autumn Woods, had seized the opportunity, striking while the iron was hot, to say they should marry her into the family as the Lawson Family’s way of showing their gratitude.
To this day, Charlotte Vaughn still didn’t understand why Autumn Woods liked her so much. She was always looking out for her, seeming to treat her even better than her own son.
But she didn’t care to understand. Since Autumn Woods liked her, she would make good use of that affection to achieve her own goals.
Now, Charlotte Vaughn’s sudden appearance before Old Mr. Lawson took the old man by surprise.
But on second thought, she was about to marry Julian Lawson and would be moving in sooner or later, so Old Mr. Lawson didn’t fault her for the unannounced visit.
He first exchanged a few pleasantries with Charlotte Vaughn and then had a servant pour her some tea.
But Charlotte Vaughn suddenly burst into tears, crying, "Grandpa, you have to help me!"
Old Mr. Lawson frowned. In truth, he greatly disliked such melodramatic displays.
However, a shrewd man like him, who had lived a long life, would naturally not show his true feelings so easily.
Charlotte Vaughn’s crying was giving the old man a headache. "Speak slowly," he said. "What is it you need me to help you with?"
Charlotte Vaughn eagerly blurted out the story about Eve Vaughn and Mason Lawson. "Grandpa, did you know? Back then, my cousin abandoned Julian when he was critically ill. Now, not only is she back, but she’s actually gotten together with his uncle! They’ve been together for a long time! Even though Eve Vaughn betrayed him once, Julian is still obsessed with her. Today, he directly asked to call off our wedding. He said he doesn’t want to marry me anymore!"
Old Mr. Lawson’s gaze suddenly sharpened. Word by word, he said, "You can’t just say things like that. Do you have proof? A matter like this could ruin our Lawson Family’s reputation. If a single word you’ve said is a lie, don’t blame me for being merciless!"
Charlotte Vaughn held up three fingers to swear an oath. "Grandpa, if even half a word of what I said is untrue, I will never set foot in the Lawson family’s home again. You can punish me however you see fit, and I won’t say a word in my defense!"
Old Mr. Lawson’s face was grim, and the hand holding his cane was trembling.
"Someone, get Eve Vaughn and bring her to the house! Immediately!"
The old man’s voice was full of authority. It was clear he wouldn’t rest until he had gotten to the bottom of the matter.
A triumphant smile flickered in Charlotte Vaughn’s eyes. ’Let’s see how Eve Vaughn gets out of this one,’ she thought.
