After Being Cheated On, I Became My Ex's Uncle's Pampered Sweetheart
Chapter 24: Heart, As If Struck by Something
The detention center.
Lana Chambers and Jason Vaughn were in a sorry state. When they saw Jonah Spencer, they were practically beside themselves with rage. đđŤđđ˛đ¨đđđđđŻđđš.đđ¨đş
"Jonah Spencer, let us out of here! Let me tell you, weâre about to be in-laws with the Lawson family! Can you afford to offend us?"
Lana Chambers roared at him, "If you know whatâs good for you, drop the lawsuit right now! Otherwise, the moment we get out, weâll go to the media and expose you and Eve Vaughn. Iâd like to see how a ârespectableâ man like you will survive in this circle then!"
A disdainful smirk touched Jonah Spencerâs lips. "Ms. Chambers, do you really think the Lawson family would want to be associated with someone who has a criminal record? As long as I press on with this lawsuit, you wonât be able to escape the slander charge. The Lawsons probably canât afford the embarrassment of having you as in-laws."
A flicker of panic crossed Lana Chambersâs face before she said hatefully, "Youâre just doing this to get revenge for Eve Vaughn! That little bitch, whatâs so great about her? Donât let her fool you!"
"Ms. Chambers, my time is precious. I have no time to waste on your nonsense." Jonah Spencerâs gaze was sharp as he spoke, enunciating every word. "You now have two choices. First, I drop the lawsuit, and you have three days to move out of Eve Vaughnâs house and return it to her. Second, I proceed with the lawsuit. If that happens, it wonât be long before this becomes the talk of Rivaster. Everyone will know that the Lawson familyâs future in-laws are locked up in a detention center for slander!"
Lana Chambers was on the verge of exploding. She raged, "Jonah Spencer, are you trying to tell me you have nothing to do with Eve Vaughn? That youâre not her sugar daddy?"
"What I say is irrelevant. Whatâs important is that you have no proof of me being with Eve Vaughn. I, on the other hand, have proof of you slandering me and causing a scene in front of my law firm."
Jonah Spencer reminded her again, "Ms. Chambers, you have one minute to think. Think carefully: whatâs more important, your daughterâs wedding or that villa?"
Lana Chambers wasnât stupid. Of course she knew how to weigh the pros and cons.
After all, once Charlotte Vaughn married into the Lawson family, she would be the young madam of the Lawsons.
Although they had signed a prenup, Julian Lawson would still have future income, which would be considered marital property. That was worth far more than the villa!
In the end, Lana Chambers gritted her teeth and agreed to move out of the villa within three days.
After having her sign the agreement, Jonah Spencer walked out of the police station.
Mason Lawsonâs car was parked at the entrance, waiting for him.
As soon as Jonah Spencer got in the car, he said, "You have no idea what a huge scapegoat Iâve been for you this time!"
Mason Lawson smiled. "Is it all settled?"
"See for yourself!"
Jonah Spencer handed him the agreement Lana Chambers had signed, promising to move out of the villa within three days.
Mason Lawson nodded. "Good. She knows whatâs best for her."
Jonah Spencer looked at him, confused. "I just donât get it. Since you know exactly what kind of people Eve Vaughnâs aunt and uncle are, and what Julian Lawsonâs fiancĂŠe is like, why not just expose them? Why go through all this trouble?"
Mason Lawson said quietly, "And after theyâre exposed? Julian Lawson finds out heâs been deceived and goes back to harassing Eve Vaughn?"
Jonah Spencer had a sudden realization. âSo, Mason has actually taken a liking to that young woman!â
Mason Lawsonâs eyes turned cold, his tone tinged with a hint of gloom. "Everyone has to take responsibility for their own choices."
...
Meanwhile, Eve Vaughn had already been waiting at Keystone Law for over two hours.
Finally, she saw Jonah Spencer walk into the lobby.
Eve Vaughn quickly stood up and went to meet him.
"Lawyer Spencer."
She said apologetically, "Iâm so sorry. I only just saw the news on Weibo this afternoon."
Jonah Spencerâs expression was calm, as if he hadnât been affected by the matter at all. He said faintly, "I was just about to look for you. Letâs talk in my office."
The words had barely left his mouth when Eric Kendall sidled up to them. "Well, well. Putting a girl before your buddy, huh? Iâve been standing here for ages. Didnât you see me?"
Jonah Spencer shot him a look. "What was all that nonsense you were sending in the group chat?" Eric Kendall rubbed his nose and whispered, "I was just worried you two would get into a fight, wasnât I?"
Jonah Spencer had never been able to understand the way Eric Kendallâs mind worked.
He headed straight for the elevator, and Eve Vaughn followed close behind.
Eric Kendall was determined to get to the bottom of things today, so he hurried after them as well.
Fueled by gossip, Eric Kendall stood to the side, perking up his ears to listen in on Jonah Spencer and Eve Vaughnâs conversation.
"Lawyer Spencer, Iâm so sorry for all the trouble. I want to apologize on behalf of my aunt and uncle," Eve Vaughn said guiltily. "If you need me to issue a clarification, Iâm available anytime. I never imagined they would spout such nonsense and tarnish your reputation like this."
Jonah Spencer said faintly, "Itâs fine. I just came from the police station. The matter is resolved. Your aunt and uncle have agreed to move out and return the villa to you. Thereâs no need for a lawsuit."
Eve Vaughn froze. She had assumed Jonah Spencer went to the police station to deal with her aunt and uncleâs slanderous rumors.
She never expected it was about her villa.
She felt even more guilty and said in a small voice, "Lawyer Spencer, I really donât know how to thank you. Please donât worry, even though weâre not filing a lawsuit, Iâll still pay you the legal fees we agreed upon."
Jonah Spencer smiled. "You donât have to be so formal. If you want to thank someone, go home and thank Mason."
Eve Vaughn was slightly surprised. "U-Uncle Mason?"
Jonah Spencer nodded. "Yes. From the very beginning, he was the one who knew you were having financial difficulties and asked me to take your case."
Eve Vaughn felt as if something had suddenly struck her heart. It ached, and she felt the urge to cry.
âSo it wasnât that the world was full of good people, or that my luck had suddenly taken a turn for the better.â
âIt was because someone had been silently helping me all along.â
âBut why?â
âShe didnât think there was anything special about herself that would make a cold and aloof man like Mason Lawson help her time and time again.â
Just then, Eric Kendallâs voice cut through her thoughts.
"Holy shit! You guys are unbelievable! So you were all pulling strings and plotting things behind the scenes, and I was the only one left in the dark?"
Eric Kendall protested, "Youâve gone too far! Are we even brothers or not?!"
Jonah Spencer shrugged. "It was Mason who told me not to say anything. I just felt that if I didnât clear things up today, Mason was going to drag me down with him!"
Then, both Eric Kendall and Jonah Spencer stared at Eve Vaughn with profound, meaningful looks.
Eve Vaughnâs face grew hot under their stares. She wanted to tell them that her relationship with Mason Lawson wasnât what they were thinking.
But even if she explained, they probably wouldnât believe her.
So, she figured it was best to make a quick exit.
Before she left, she thanked Jonah Spencer again and hurried away.
Eric Kendall watched Eve Vaughnâs retreating figure and mused, "Her ass isnât that big, and her chest isnât that perky... Sheâs not bad-looking, I guess, but Mason is surrounded by stunners! Every one of them is better than her! What on earth does he see in her?"
"She looks like Joanna Sullivan, of course!"
Jonah Spencer analyzed, "Think about it. Ever since Joanna Sullivan left all those years ago, has any other woman ever stayed by Masonâs side? I donât believe Mason would focus his attention on a girl for no reason. Unless... itâs for a reason he canât resist."
