After Divorce, She Became a Global Sensation and Won't Forgive Her Groveling Husband and Son
Chapter 14: Wishful Thinking
Levin Sawyer, who had heard every single word, couldn’t help but make another sarcastic remark. "What do you mean she’s the first? You were barely an adult when you sent a rocket into space—that was six or seven years before her."
If they hadn’t deliberately kept a low profile and hidden her identity, there’d be no room for Joanna Sherman to be showing off like this.
Sophia Shaw hummed. She was actually lost in her own thoughts and had no idea what Levin Sawyer had just said.
Seeing her like this, Levin Sawyer shook his head helplessly. He glanced at Vincent Grant and gritted his teeth in frustration.
Having a wife as brilliant as her and not cherishing her, instead paving the way for some innocent-looking schemer. The man is blind!
Afraid he would lose control and disturb Sophia Shaw, Levin Sawyer grabbed some documents from the side and used them to cover his face.
The opening ceremony was followed by the keynote speeches. The speakers were all local and international big names, at least at the academic level.
Afraid of missing a single detail, Sophia Shaw stared intently at the stage, her eyes shining with fervent light.
When she heard something exciting, she habitually tugged on Levin Sawyer’s arm. "That’s brilliant! How did I not think of that!"
Up ahead, Justin Hughes had been waiting to see what stunt Sophia Shaw would pull. When he saw her constantly tugging on Levin Sawyer, who just kept his face hidden behind some papers, a cruel, cold smile spread across his face, his lips curling up to his cheekbones.
"So that’s her game. She’s pretending to be all chummy with Levin Sawyer, hoping to make Vincent jealous! Too bad for her, Levin Sawyer isn’t giving her the time of day!"
Justin Hughes was sitting behind Joanna Sherman, and he said this loud enough for her to hear.
With her arms crossed, Joanna Sherman shot a sideways glance behind her. "Justin Hughes, mind your own business."
"How is this someone else’s business? If it weren’t for her back then, you wouldn’t have... How does she have the nerve to keep pestering Vincent!"
Justin Hughes was more hung up on what happened back then than the people who were actually involved.
"Hah! Even if she’s trying to get a rise out of him, Vincent wouldn’t give her a second look. She’s just flattering herself!"
Vincent Grant happened to have left his seat, so Justin Hughes deliberately raised his voice, making sure Sophia Shaw could hear him.
Levin Sawyer heard this and, lowering the papers, frowned in Justin Hughes’s direction. His lips tightened, and he raised his hand, about to have someone throw Justin Hughes out.
But seeing that Sophia Shaw was completely engrossed and hadn’t even noticed Justin Hughes spouting bullshit, he lowered his hand again.
He can’t let a scumbag like that bother Sophia.
Only when the speech ended did Sophia Shaw realize how badly she needed to use the restroom, and she practically jogged all the way there.
Inside a stall, she couldn’t resist making a video call to Bun. When she came out, she ran right into Jenson Forrest.
Sophia Shaw no longer wanted anything to do with anyone connected to Vincent Grant. She also knew Jenson looked down on her, so she didn’t greet him and tried to sidestep past him.
"Miss Shaw." As he called out, a phone was held out in front of her. It was the one taken from her by the two kidnappers!
Sophia Shaw was startled. She took it.
Jenson Forrest’s gaze was locked on her. "I don’t know why you were there, Miss Shaw, but if this kidnapping was your way of getting revenge on the people around Vincent, you’d better stop before you go too far."
The kidnappers had used the pretense of the Forrest Family owing them wages to take his sister, but there was no guarantee that someone wasn’t using this incident to stir up trouble.
"Of course, if you just happened to be passing by and ended up saving my sister, I will personally visit you to express my gratitude once I’ve confirmed the facts."
"No need!" Sophia Shaw looked down, turning the phone over to inspect it, her expression cool and detached.
Now that she’s no longer in love with Vincent Grant, she doesn’t feel the need to deliberately curry favor with his friends anymore.
"I never intended to save your sister. Everything I did was to save myself. As for your theory that the kidnapping was my method of revenge, Mr. Forrest... frankly, you’re not even the most disgusting person around Vincent Grant. If I were to get revenge, I wouldn’t start with you."
Even Jenson Forrest was taken aback by her bluntness. Although Sophia Shaw usually didn’t pay much attention to him and Justin Hughes, she had never been so direct in her assessment of them.
Disgusting and most disgusting?
The man’s fingers, hidden beneath his sleeve, curled slightly. Still, he apologized, "In that case, I misunderstood you."
Sophia Shaw brandished her phone. "Then we’re even!"
She turned on her heel and left. Her phone has important files on it. While they’re not things people could easily access without the phone, she’d have to redo so much work from scratch.
Jenson Forrest had done her a huge favor. And she had saved his sister, which was enough to cancel out the debt.
Sophia Shaw wandered around the venue for a while longer, listening to a few speeches that caught her interest.
Her eyes were constantly scanning the crowd, searching for a familiar figure.
Levin Sawyer saw through her and, though he hated to, said softly, "The professor has something on. He didn’t attend the summit today."
"Oh, I see..." Sophia Shaw’s shoulders slumped. She thought she might run into the professor, just to get a glimpse of him. "I was so stubborn back then, so determined to leave... The professor... he must still be furious with me."
Levin Sawyer looked gravely at the dejected Sophia. He wanted to comfort her and say it wasn’t true, but he knew she wouldn’t be fooled.
In the end, he just patted her shoulder gently. "But you’re back now, aren’t you? As long as you work hard and achieve something, the professor will eventually come around."
"Really...?" Sophia Shaw’s eyes brightened slightly, but she wasn’t entirely convinced. After all, she hurt him so deeply back then. The professor had placed all his hopes in her, but she threw them all away so easily for a man.
"It’s not the first time you’ve defied him, and it’s not the first time he’s been angry with you. Hasn’t he always chewed you out for a bit after you achieved something, then happily welcomed you back?
"The professor might scold you, but deep down, you’ll always be the best in his eyes."
Levin Sawyer did his best to console her. "Have you forgotten? That time you argued with him in front of so many people, saying that rocket scientists only knew how to burn money and that no one was doing any real work. You even guaranteed you would cut rocket production costs by more than ninety percent.
"The professor was so angry that his eyebrows and beard were trembling. He threatened to expel you, but didn’t he still protect you every step of the way?
"When you pulled me back home to start a company, the professor called us prodigals on the surface, but when we ran into real trouble, he stayed up all night with us, helping us through it."
Thinking of the past, Sophia Shaw couldn’t help but let out a chuckle. "I was so reckless back then. I’d slam the table at a top authority over a single data point. And I fought with the professor more than once or twice."
Looking back, in the entire scientific community, probably only the professor was open-minded enough to tolerate all her bad tempers, always protecting and supporting her, never abandoning her.
She was the one who had failed him.
Her eyes stung. She silently turned her head and wiped away tears of regret. "Levin, you’re right. I have to achieve something! I can’t let all the years the professor doted on me go to waste."
"That’s the spirit." Levin Sawyer nodded in satisfaction. "Once the summit is over, you should officially come back to the company."
Back when Sophia Shaw was determined to marry Vincent Grant, she gave all her shares to Levin Sawyer, telling him to use them to recruit talent as compensation for her departure.
"Let’s wait a little longer."
Sophia didn’t say what she was waiting for, but Levin Sawyer knew she must have her reasons, so he didn’t press her. He just said, "I still have your shares. I used our joint shares to recruit talent."
Sophia felt she couldn’t just take shares without doing any work, so she just said, "We’ll see."
The summit lasted for three days, but the important sessions were mostly finished by 3 PM.
Sophia Shaw wandered around a bit more, then remembered that today was the day for Bun’s vaccinations and check-up, so she hurriedly left the venue.
"What a cute little one. So young and already knows how to smile at me."
In the examination room, the doctor carefully placed Bun on the measuring device, completely charmed by the baby’s sweet, soft smile.
After a busy seven or eight hours, dealing with other children who were either crying or fussing, and parents who were constantly finding fault, she was already exhausted both mentally and physically.
Then suddenly, this well-behaved, adorable baby arrived, and all her fatigue instantly vanished.
Sophia Shaw gently held her kicking legs, straightening them so the doctor could measure her height.
"Weight is 5 kg, height is 60 cm. She’s growing exceptionally well."
The little one’s measurements were on the higher end for her age.
Sophia Shaw and Ms. Archer were also very happy.
Ms. Archer, in particular, felt a great sense of accomplishment.
The two of them walked out with the baby.
"Wow, how are all the babies who came in today so beautiful?"
"This one is so adorable, and that one over there—even the parents and older brother are good-looking."
Outside the door, two nurses saw them come out. While admiring Bun’s cuteness, they whispered and pointed off to the side.
Sophia Shaw looked over.
