After Divorce, She Became a Global Sensation and Won't Forgive Her Groveling Husband and Son
Chapter 172: The Man Sophia Shaw Brought Back Late at Night Is Quite a Charmer
Shane Grant instinctively slowed down, driving more smoothly.
He also turned up the heat in the car slightly.
It was late at night by the time they reached her place.
Shane Grant hopped out of the car and handed her the keys.
Sophia Shaw didn’t take them. "Why don’t you just take my car?"
It would be hard to get a taxi this late, and driving would be much more convenient.
Shane Grant yawned.
"Do you have a spare room? If it’s okay, I could crash here for the night."
She had only bought a two-bedroom apartment.
Ms. Archer used one room, and she and Bun used the other.
"There’s only... the couch."
"Doesn’t matter." Shane Grant waved his hand dismissively. "A couch is better than the wilderness. I’ll leave as soon as I wake up."
Sophia Shaw trusted Shane Grant’s character. He had driven her all this way, so letting him sleep on the couch wasn’t too much to ask.
Sophia Shaw led him upstairs.
Ms. Archer, who had been sleeping groggily, still came out to greet them when she heard the door open.
She was startled to see a tall man following Sophia Shaw.
"This is..."
Sophia Shaw started to introduce him. "This is Shane Grant, he’s..."
"A friend," Shane Grant cut in, his charming eyes curving as he smiled at Ms. Archer.
Ms. Archer’s heart fluttered.
’This young man is quite the charmer,’ she thought. ’With those eyes, he looks at everyone with such affection.’
Sophia Shaw didn’t have any men’s clothes at home, so she couldn’t offer Shane Grant anything to change into.
Shane Grant didn’t mind. He just laid down on the couch and went to sleep without a fuss.
Ms. Archer pulled Sophia Shaw into the bedroom. "Where did this young man come from? Don’t tell me he’s your new boyfriend."
"No, he’s Vincent Grant’s... brother."
Sophia Shaw didn’t want to mention Vincent Grant’s name more than she had to.
"He was just kind enough to drive me home and is borrowing the couch for the night."
"Oh, that’s good." Ms. Archer patted her chest in relief. "That boy, Levin..."
Ms. Archer trailed off, leaving her sentence unfinished.
’Levin Sawyer is still single at his age. Isn’t he waiting for her?’
’If she found a boyfriend, Levin Sawyer would be heartbroken.’
Sophia Shaw was exhausted after four hours of intense mental work and didn’t really hear what Ms. Archer was saying.
She walked over to kiss Bun’s little face, then lay down beside her. Cuddling her small, soft body, she fell asleep in moments.
When she woke the next day, Shane Grant was gone.
A large red envelope was left on the table.
It was for Bun.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Sophia Shaw couldn’t guess who would be visiting so early. She carried Bun to the door.
Yancy Shaw was standing outside.
"Uncle?"
Sophia Shaw looked at him in surprise.
Yancy Shaw was carrying lots of fruit, as well as Bun’s formula and nutritional supplements.
His hands were weighed down.
Sophia Shaw quickly let him in.
Ms. Archer came to greet him and took the things from his hands.
Bun saw her food and started babbling, reaching out for it, wanting to eat.
After setting the things down, Ms. Archer picked her up and prepared a bottle of formula for her.
Only then did Sophia Shaw ask, "Uncle, why are you here so early?"
Yancy Shaw brushed the dust from his sleeves, his gaze heavy as he looked at Sophia Shaw. "Your aunt told me yesterday that you transferred two hundred million to us. Where did you get that kind of money?"
Yancy Shaw knew very well that Sophia Shaw had only been at Lead Aerospace for half a year. Even if she didn’t eat or drink, her assets wouldn’t amount to two hundred million yet.
"You didn’t... take public funds, did you?"
Although he knew Sophia Shaw wasn’t that kind of person, he also knew she felt a deep sense of guilt towards the Shaw Family and was afraid she might make a mistake.
"Don’t worry, I didn’t." Sophia Shaw shook her head. "I got it from the Shermans and Chad Jennings."
"Them?"
Yancy Shaw was even more skeptical.
Chad Jennings and the Shermans stealing and swindling money was believable, but giving money away was utterly impossible.
Sophia Shaw knew she couldn’t hide some things, so she had to tell the truth. "Vincent Grant and I divorced. They were afraid I’d cause a scene, so they gave me two hundred million as hush money."
Sophia Shaw didn’t mention that Vincent Grant had finalized the divorce without even reading the agreement, afraid it would upset Yancy Shaw again.
Hearing that they had divorced, Yancy Shaw was silent for a long time.
Vincent Grant didn’t care about Sophia Shaw, so as her uncle, he naturally didn’t want her to be with such a man.
’But he was, after all, the man my niece loved.’
They even had a child together.
Yancy Shaw’s feelings were extremely complicated.
"Uncle, don’t worry. I’m doing well. With Bun by my side, and you, Auntie, and Grandma, my life will only get better."
Sophia Shaw had truly come to terms with it, a faint serenity in her expression.
Only then did Yancy Shaw pat her shoulder in relief. "Faye, no matter what you decide, your uncle will support you."
"Okay."
With that single word, Sophia Shaw’s eyes immediately reddened.
Her uncle was just so, so indulgent with her.
Back then, she had given up everything to insist on marrying Vincent Grant.
Even though her uncle was completely against it, he had still given her half of Swiftstream as her dowry.
After Joanna Sherman returned to the country, she teamed up with Vincent Grant to attack and sabotage his business in every way, yet he never said a single harsh word to her.
From childhood to adulthood, he had done everything in his power to get her whatever she wanted.
She loved to read, so he forbade anyone from disturbing her.
When she was sick, he would ignore his company and stay by her side with her aunt, nursing her tirelessly.
The best room in the Shaw Family home was hers; the most expensive things were hers.
The more she thought about it, the more Sophia Shaw felt she had let Yancy Shaw down, and tears began to fall.
"Uncle, from now on, let me take care of you."
Yancy Shaw’s eyes reddened as well.
’My dear little niece,’ he thought. ’She’s just gone through something as painful as a divorce, and yet she’s already thinking about me, her uncle.’
He was speechless, his heart filled with a bittersweet feeling. He gently patted Sophia Shaw’s shoulder and nodded silently.
"By the way, your grandmother has been talking about you all a lot lately. The Dragon Boat Festival is in two days, and she specifically asked me to have you come over for a meal and to make zongzi."
Sophia Shaw thought about it. It really had been a long time since she’d seen her grandmother.
The whole family used to make zongzi together every Dragon Boat Festival; this year should be no exception.
So she said, "Okay."
Yancy Shaw had to go to work, so he didn’t stay long.
Considering her grandmother’s health, and not wanting to spoil the happy occasion with news of her divorce, Sophia Shaw repeatedly urged Yancy Shaw not to mention it.
The Dragon Boat Festival arrived in the blink of an eye, and Lead Aerospace gave its employees the day off.
Only Sophia Shaw and a few key engineers were left, busy for most of the day.
In the afternoon, Sophia Shaw and Leah Evans finally picked up Bun and went to the Shaw Family’s home.
Every year, Leah Evans got to eat the zongzi the Shaw Family mailed to her home. She absolutely loved them, so she was thrilled to hear they were going to make them.
When the group of four got out of the car, they saw that a stove was already set up in the yard with a large iron pot on top.
Beside the stove was a pile of chopped lychee wood.
Crestfall was famous for its lychees, and people there were particularly fond of using lychee wood as firewood to cook zongzi.
Grandma appeared in the yard, her back stooped as she stirred the glutinous rice that had long been soaked until each grain was plump, adding some mung beans.
In bowls nearby were eggs and cured meat.
Freshly picked, long zongzi leaves were laid out neatly in a basin to the side.
"Oh my god, is this the legendary Crestfall specialty, the mung bean, egg, and cured meat zongzi?"
Just looking at the raw ingredients, Leah Evans couldn’t help but imagine what the zongzi would be like when cooked, and she swallowed hard.
The car had barely stopped when she jumped out and sprinted towards the yard.
Sophia Shaw and Ms. Archer watched her retreating back, speechless, then also got out of the car with Bun.
Just as the two of them reached the gate to the yard, they saw a large figure and a small one walk out from the main house.
The smile on Sophia Shaw’s face instantly froze.
Endless hostility and coldness rose in the depths of her eyes.
