After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret
Chapter 284: Unlimited Communicator
She was like a mysterious figure. The moment she left, it was as if she had vanished into thin air.
Although the base currently had ample supplies, Henry Dixon had calculated their consumption rate. Based on the speed at which the rescue teams were gathering resources, the base’s supplies might not last more than a few years.
The amount of supplies Claire Warner had provided this time was substantial, enough to last the base for several months.
"I’m also doing it for myself."
Claire Warner simply said in response.
Henry Dixon, always thinking of the people, tended to paint her as a larger-than-life hero.
But she wasn’t some great saint who expected nothing in return.
"Haha, you’re right. Anyone who doesn’t look out for themselves is a fool. You have to take good care of yourself out there."
Before Claire Warner left, Henry Dixon couldn’t resist adding a word of caution. She didn’t look much older than his own daughter.
"I will."
Claire Warner replied earnestly.
After her transaction with the Provisions Department, her system had successfully upgraded.
Nina Jacobs circled the area outside the base several times, not returning until after dark.
She went straight to her room, taking stock of the Level Four System’s rewards:
First Superpower Cards, 400 Superpower Recovery Potions, 200 Healing Potions, two Unlimited Communicators, and two Safe House Skins.
The system’s storage space had expanded to 80 square meters, and the duration of all her Skills was extended by another hour.
The Level Four System didn’t grant any new Skills, but Nina Jacobs was already more than satisfied when she saw the communicators.
This solved her biggest worry whenever she was away from the base—
her family.
She opened the instructions for the Unlimited Communicator. Just like in her past life, the devices could only be unlocked with a fingerprint. They didn’t require dialing and could only be used to send text messages between the two paired units.
Messages were deleted immediately after being read.
"In other words, I can only send texts," Nina Jacobs realized.
The communicator’s functions were identical to the one from her past life.
The self-deleting messages also greatly enhanced its security.
But aside from the communicators, she was surprised to see the system had also given her 20 First Superpower Cards.
That was an unexpected bonus.
She hadn’t received these in her past life.
"Nina, is everything packed?"
Vera Coleman knocked on her daughter’s door. When Nina opened it, she pulled her mother into the room with a secretive expression.
"I’m leaving the day after tomorrow. Shirley Lucas has my things, so I don’t need to pack anything,"
Nina Jacobs replied.
Vera Coleman had already packed her changes of clothes.
"I packed some more disposable items for you, along with your underwear. You can keep these in your car. Shirley Lucas is a boy, after all, so it’s not appropriate for him to hold onto some of your things,"
Vera Coleman advised.
Her daughter didn’t have a boyfriend yet, and Vera couldn’t help but worry about certain matters.
In response, Nina Jacobs took out something Vera had never seen before.
It looked somewhat like a thin foldable mirror, and when opened, it did indeed reveal a mirror on one side.
"What is this?" Vera Coleman asked, unable to fathom why her daughter would give her a mirror.
Nina Jacobs smiled, sat down next to Vera Coleman, and said, "Try touching this spot here."
Vera Coleman did as she was told. When her fingertip touched the spot, the "mirror" powered on. One side became a translucent screen, while the other revealed a row of touch-sensitive keys.
"This... what kind of high-tech is this?"
Vera Coleman stared, mesmerized.
She could feel the sense of advanced technology coming from the object in her hand.
She thought she had seen all of Drakonia’s smart technology products before the apocalypse, but this felt far more advanced.
Nina Jacobs just smiled without a word and took out another identical "foldable mirror."
After powering it on the same way, Nina Jacobs typed a message on the touch-sensitive keys and hit send.
"Is it a base communicator?"
Vera Coleman looked at the message she received. But as soon as she opened and read it, it automatically deleted itself.
Nina Jacobs shook her head. "Even when I’m outside the base, you’ll be able to contact me at any time."
Vera Coleman’s expression turned to one of shock.
"But aren’t the satellite signals and all that useless now?"
’Can this little thing really work?’
"That’s why this has to be a secret. Only you and I can use them, and it’s best if no one else knows about it,"
Nina Jacobs said gravely.
"So that means I can contact you every day?!"
Seeing her daughter smile and nod, a huge weight was finally lifted from Vera Coleman’s heart.
She thought for a moment and said:
"I don’t know where you got these, but I promise you, Mom won’t let a third person find out."
’Only my daughter and I know what this is for.’
Ever since her daughter had given her that miraculous Healing Potion, she knew that Nina had some kind of secret.
’Perhaps that’s why Nina is away so often.’
’This device in my hand must also be something she worked hard to get.’
’She must hate being away from home for so long, too...’
"Of course I trust you. With these, I’ll message you every day. You can also tell me if anything comes up,"
Nina Jacobs said.
The Unlimited Communicators, which she hadn’t needed in her past life, had now solved her most pressing problem in this one.
"Then I can rest assured."
That night, Vera Coleman slept in her daughter’s room. The two of them stayed up late talking, reminiscing about the time before the apocalypse and even about Nina’s childhood.
On the morning Nina Jacobs left the base, she used a First Superpower Card to awaken a Wood Element Superpower for the family’s cook, Walsh.
Walsh’s Friendship level with her had already reached 80, and she felt he deserved a First Superpower Card.
Not only that, but she also had Vera Coleman, Wendy Marshall, and Yvonne Willow each absorb a Mystic Ice Core.
"Be careful on your journey,"
Wendy Marshall said.
Wayne Abbott’s team was short on Water Element and Space Element Superpowers, so Nina Jacobs had her and Yvonne Willow stay at the base.
This time, Nina Jacobs was bringing Wayne Warner, Holden Shaw, Chase Gallagher, and Jessica Vance with her.
"Don’t worry, Dad. I won’t cause any trouble for Nina."
Leo Hale had volunteered to come along. He had decided last time that the next time Nina Jacobs went on a long trip, he would definitely go with her.
Besides, this expedition to the Bishop Clan was organized by Daniel Hale himself.
Watching the departing team, Daniel Hale sighed.
He noticed, however, that his wife, Vera Coleman, didn’t seem as downcast as she usually was before these trips.
"Nina is so capable, you don’t need to worry too much about her and Leo Hale,"
Vera Coleman comforted him instead.
"Of course I know Nina is capable. The main thing is that once they leave, it’s hard to contact them,"
Daniel Hale said with his head lowered as they walked.
"Yes, it would be nice if they could just let us know they’re safe."
Vera Coleman suppressed a smile. Although she knew Daniel Hale would worry, she had no intention of telling him about the communicators...
Though they called it a convoy, it consisted of only three vehicles, including the lead SUV.
The other two vehicles were the rescue team buses that entered and left the base daily, so their departure didn’t attract much attention.
"I heard it took Trevor and his group a full 18 days to get to the base?"
Shirley Lucas was also sitting in Nina Jacobs’s SUV.
Holden Shaw was still the one driving.
"Yes. If our journey is relatively smooth, we can probably get there in less than ten days."
Nina Jacobs was being conservative. According to her system’s map, they should be able to make it in six days.
To reach the Bishop Clan, they needed to bypass one city, three counties, and several towns and villages of varying sizes.
