Zara

I had to go back to the office tomorrow, and I knew I wouldn’t be able to return to my dad’s apartment; he’d be taking me to his packhouse. He’d already given me more time than I expected, knowing how much he enjoyed controlling everyone, especially me now.

A stupid part of my heart wished he’d just send me an apology, saying it was just a joke, but he was dead silent.

My heart ached and pounded, and my stomach clenched. I struggled to fall asleep, ignoring the beeping of my phone as I drifted off.

My sleep was fitful, and Alpha was breaking my heart over and over again, screaming that he’d never love me.

I woke up earlier than I should have and got out of bed. After taking a bath, I dried my hair, preparing myself for whatever challenge Alpha had in store for me.

Knowing him, I knew he’d be prepared for something extremely dramatic. But he only saw the cheerful and loving side of me, not my detached and petty self.

I pulled out a black pantsuit and put it on with a red cape. Putting on my glasses, I was ready to face the world.

No more tears.

I imprinted this phrase on my heart and mind. When I left the pack house, Kayser was waiting for me with takeout croissants and cappuccino. I didn’t understand why he kept bringing me food without even asking.

"Again? I’m not hungry, Kaysir. Why did you bring me this?"

He scratched the back of his head apologetically. "An order, Miss Zara. I was asked to deliver this."

Yes! I knew who it was from. He didn’t care if he broke my heart, spied on me, manipulated me, called me a woman who slept around, but he cared about how I ate? Alpha wanted me to leave the position as a demon Queen, but his way of demanding was just humiliating."Take this to whoever ordered you to bring it to me," I said with a cold smile and confidently headed for the elevator. Poor Kasir staggered behind me, but didn’t try to offer me food anymore.

The walk to the office was silent. Snow covered everything, from the roads to the trees. The cold had finally arrived, and I felt it chilling my heart. Snowplows had cleared most of the snow from the roads, clearing a path for cars.

We arrived at the parking lot, and I got out of the car to see Chan waiting for me with his usual beaming smile.

"Hello!" he waved, dressed in a beige sweater and black tweed pants.

"Hello!" "I waved back, plastering on a smile and approaching him.

"I’m here to see you out, my lady. You’ll be working with me from now on," he offered with a smile, narrowing his eyes. He kept his hands behind his back, but I sensed a note of sympathy in his voice.

So that’s what he did: he transferred me from my secretary position to the sales department.

"Of course! Could you please escort me? I didn’t receive the notice," I asked humbly, walking beside him.

He respectfully extended his hand, motioning for me to lead the way. We headed toward the stairs.

"You’ll be working as a sales analyst, analyzing sales trends and compiling corresponding reports on sales targets for each month. I’ll provide you with the data and guide you carefully. Don’t worry." Chan opened the door, and we began the climb up to his office.

"I’d be grateful," I nodded gratefully, trying to calm my foolish heart by telling him that it was a good thing. We wouldn’t have to deal with him often.

"So, the winter gala was a huge success. Our sales have already increased significantly. Everyone praised you; you were phenomenal on the runway," Chan sang, pushing his hair back from his forehead.

"That’s good, I’m sure it’s thanks to how hard everyone worked on creating these dresses. I hope sales continue to grow," I said quietly, focusing on my steps. Chan must have sensed the tension in my voice.

He nodded softly but didn’t ask me any more questions about the Winter Gala, and my absence.

We approached the sales department on the fifth floor, and Chan, like a true gentleman, opened the door for me, letting me in first.

I looked around the spacious room with four glass booths and one head desk. There was no clear division between the upper and lower echelons. As if sensing the question from my expression, Chan explained:

"In the sales department, we all work at the same level. There’s no hierarchy. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. You’ll like it here. Come, let me introduce you." He ushered me forward, and I followed, this time with a broad smile.

Two people occupied the two booths; one was a scruffy guy with glasses similar to mine, but with much thicker lenses, so they weren’t ostentatious. He wore a gray tie and a white shirt.

"Meet our sales manager, Mardis Acermi. He’s a pillar of our department." The man stood awkwardly, adjusted his glasses, and extended his hand.

"Miss Zara, what an honor." I shook her hand; it was rather damp; the man looked nervous.

"My honor; please call me Zara," I offered with a kind smile, and he reciprocated.

The other was a woman in her thirties, with a professional and elegant air. Her hair was pulled back into a single braid, and she was wearing a winter blouse, skirt, and stockings.

"This is Harnya, with the silent ’j’. She’s our wonderful accountant," Chan introduced her playfully, and I extended my hand. She shook it professionally and smiled slightly.

"Hello!"

"Zara will be joining us, and I want everyone to give her a warm welcome," Chan announced, leaning against one of the desks.

"Welcome, we’re very happy to see you." Mardis’s cheerful voice reached me.

"This is your desk. I’ll leave you to get settled. If you need anything, I’m over there. Don’t hesitate to ask." Chan pointed to the booth across from me, and I nodded.

"Thank you! I appreciate it."

"There’s coffee and snacks, try something to your liking. Have you had breakfast?" Chan asked, straightening up and crossing his arms as I settled into the black swivel chair.

"Yes!" "I lied, not wanting to bring up food.

"Let me know if you need anything." He finally walked away, leaving me to get my bearings.

The rectangular desk was almost bare: a modern HP Thunder computer with a wireless keyboard, mouse, pen holder, and a few document folders, that’s all. The cubicle was small but neat, with two glass partitions.

I was sure Alpha had transferred me here because I was worried he was spying on me without my consent. It was an open-plan office with lots of people around, so there were no cameras.

But I still kept glancing around, looking for hidden portals. The men in my life had made me extremely paranoid lately, and I wasn’t even sure what I’d done to deserve all this.

Lost in the whirlwind that had become my life, I simply sat there, staring into space, detached and disconnected from the world around me.

"Zara!"

"Zara!"

Chan’s voice finally brought me back to my bleak reality; he stood there, looking at me with a worried expression. "Are you okay?"

I took a deep breath and said apologetically, "Yes! Sorry, I just got distracted for a second."

"It’s okay. When you’re ready, we’ll analyze the sales data from Winter Gala and start processing it." Chan handed me a piece of paper with the computer password.

"You can change it so that only you have access." After accepting the password, I saw he’d scribbled something underneath it. "You can talk to me during lunch. The office will be empty."

Raising my head, I gave him a grateful smile. "Okay, thank you."

Chan went to his desk.

After that, I tried to focus on work. When I walked into When I reached a dead end, I turned to Chan or Mardis for help. Both gently guided me.

Sales soared, showing a very promising 30 percent increases everyday.

The day after the Winter Gala was a day off, which contributed to the sales surge. I was literally overwhelmed with joy that the Winter Gala had been such a successful launch of the Winter Collection.

I was so engrossed in crunching the numbers on the chart I’d created that I almost didn’t notice the silence.

Alpha’s unmistakable scent followed me, and I tensed. Slowly, my gaze lifted and found him. My face became even sterner than his. His presence squeezed my heart, not only painfully, but also pierced deep crevices where no one had dared to look before.

Like Satan, he was dressed in black from head to toe. His steely gaze turned to stone. There was nothing on his face or in his eyes but emptiness.

The clothes clung to every muscle, leaving no room even for air. The snake on his neck looked at me, as if mocking.

I exhaled slowly.

His lips moved, expressing a single emotion. How could he pull away so easily? The thought still haunted me.

"I need the sales figures on my desk by the end of the day." This order was addressed to me as he stood a few steps away from my desk, his hands shoved deep into his trouser pockets.

I wasn’t ready to face him, but I would never let him see me weak again. I looked around and saw that everyone else was standing and looking at us, except me.

To further anger this literal bastard who had broken my heart, I plastered on the most annoying smile I could and said in a flattering tone, "Of course... sir."
