Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival
Chapter 68: This Is a Small Mission?
"Go back? On what grounds?" Anger was written all over Zhai Ruobai’s boyish face. "Just because they’re weak, they get to be right?"
"When the missions were being assigned, they were the ones who clamored to take the Su City route! We even let them choose first!"
"Damn right," the brawny, middle-aged Xue Feng said, leaning against a car with his arms crossed. "Now they send Mr. Wu over to plead their case. What’s their game?"
"What other game could it be? They just want my bro to go clean up their mess!" Zhai Ruobai was livid. "Bro, let’s just ignore them."
"Besides, we’re hauling six carloads of people! Turning back now? You’ve got to be kidding me."
A man with a refined air and gold-rimmed glasses spoke calmly from the side. "They’re not suggesting all six cars turn back. They’ve just zeroed in on the boss. They want him to go solve the problem."
"On what grounds?!" Zhai Ruobai was even more incensed. "That little bastard, Yang Yiling! He better hope I don’t get my hands on him. I’ll beat him every single time I see him!"
The two soldiers standing behind Gu Chen looked a bit awkward as they listened to the angry ranting.
They had come over with Mr. Wu and knew this was a scummy thing to do. They didn’t have a leg to stand on.
But what could be done now?
"Captain Gu, we’re truly sorry."
Gu Chen, however, didn’t seem nearly as opposed. He simply asked, "Are the casualties for Team B severe?"
"More than half are casualties. It’s quite severe. Captain Yang and his men were pinned down on the road; they never even made it to pick up Dr. Wei and the others."
"Dr. Wei and his assistants have reportedly evacuated the lab and are hiding in a nearby processing plant."
"Heh," Zhai Ruobai scoffed. "So what’s the deal now? Are you asking my bro to go to the processing plant to get Dr. Wei? Or to rescue that moron, Yang Yiling?"
The middle-aged soldier gave an awkward chuckle. "Captain Gu, you know how important Dr. Wei and his people are to us right now. He absolutely must be brought to the safe zone. And then... we’ll also need to trouble you to make a stop at the largest Seed Base in Su City."
"We don’t know what the future holds, so seeds are crucial for humanity’s survival. And, um, lastly..." The middle-aged soldier coughed. "We hope that if Captain Gu has time, you could swing by and bring Captain Yang’s team back as well."
"Hey, Old Du! Let me just ask you, swing by *where*, huh? You call that ’swinging by’?! Where the hell is that bastard Yang Yiling stuck, anyway? And what do you mean ’one little task’? Is this one little task? This is clearly three tasks. Three!"
The refined man in glasses quickly stepped forward and grabbed the erupting Zhai Ruobai, nodding calmly. "Although Er Bai’s attitude is poor, he’s speaking facts. One: rescue Dr. Wei. Two: scavenge for supplies at the Seed Base. Three: save Yang Yiling and his people. That is unequivocally three missions."
’Who are you trying to fool? You think we didn’t graduate from elementary school?’
The middle-aged soldier surnamed Du rubbed his nose. "Captain Gu, the mission is indeed a bit difficult, but the organization has the utmost confidence in you. We believe you can definitely complete it."
Gu Chen, who had been silent this whole time, shook his head at the man’s words. "Can’t do it."
Du Zhonggang: "..."
Gu Chen looked at him, feigning difficulty. "I have six carloads of people here, all crying out for food. Besides, you think it’s safe here at the Song Family Pavilion? We just dealt with a zombie that had abnormally fast running and jumping speed. Who knows how many more like it are lurking around."
"If something happens, who’s going to be responsible? You or me?"
