Apocalypse - Infinite Resource System
Chapter 133: City Destruction
Ding!
[Dear survivors, one week later, a giant meteor will fall on City 22, destroying the entire city and all its structures on the ground. Please be aware!]
The system suddenly released an announcement, leaving everyone in shock. No one had expected such a massive meteor that could obliterate an entire city. This meant that they had to be forced to move to another city.
Even those who had no plans to relocate were now compelled to do so. They had no choice but to abandon the underground bunkers and shelters they had built in City 22, and it was heart-wrenching for them.
Waldo clicked open the chat channel and found many people expressing their frustrations.
Nash: I can’t believe this! We spent so many resources to build the underground bunkers, and now City 22 is going to be destroyed. It’s all a waste!
Gerar: This is just unbelievable! The city will be destroyed in a week, and without any resources, there won’t be any survival space left. It’s like they are leading us to a dead end!
Rederick: Our team used a lot of resources to build the underground bunker. When we can finally come out after a week, we will probably have already run out of supplies. Moving at that time will be just as dangerous, as we might encounter other hostile survivors or zombie hordes.
Most survivors were feeling the same way. They had fought and struggled for so long, and now, they were back to square one because of a sudden meteor shower. The feeling was akin to buying a house, only to face a financial crisis right after, making all their previous efforts seem futile.
But for Waldo, this news wasn’t entirely bad. Moving to City 25, which was the closest city, gave him an opportunity to deal with Leonard, who seemed to have some powerful background.
As the days passed, the meteor’s arrival drew closer, and every moment felt agonizing for the survivors. There was nothing they could do to stop the impending catastrophe. They just wanted it to be over and leave this place as soon as possible.
Finally, the day arrived. The meteor approached City 22, and everyone watched the live broadcast from the system, witnessing the massive blue-flamed meteor getting closer and closer to the ground.
10!
The countdown began, and the pressure of the approaching meteor overwhelmed everyone, filling their hearts with fear. Even though they knew their advanced underground bunker would be safe, the fear deep within their hearts was hard to quell.
Waldo, comforting Alanna and Helen in his arms, couldn’t take his eyes off the live broadcast.
9!
8!
7!
6!
Everyone started counting down silently.
5!
4!
3!
2!
1!
Boom!
The giant meteor crashed into the center of City 22, causing a massive impact. The simultaneous release of a powerful shockwave made the survivors’ ears ring.
They witnessed the devastation, as the city crumbled, buildings collapsed, and roads were destroyed. The energy of the impact turned everything into fragments as if the city was made of paper.
In a matter of seconds, City 22 became a ruin, no longer worthy of being called a city.
Survived.
In the chat channel, a survivor exclaimed sincerely.
Everyone fell into silence.
The phrase "survived" encapsulated everything the survivors of City 22 wanted to say. Just being alive was enough.
Inside the advanced underground bunker, Waldo kissed the foreheads of his two companions, Alanna and Helen, smiling as he said, "Congratulations to the three of us for surviving the disaster of the meteor shower."
Alanna cradled Waldo’s face, gazing at him with affection. "Thank you, my man," she said. It was Waldo’s strength that provided them with the most solid protection.
Waldo pulled Alanna’s hand over and smiled faintly. Alanna understood and expressed her feelings without words. It was enough.
Helen, in her own way, expressed her love for Waldo. Waldo was taken aback as Helen’s slightly cold but soft lips covered his. Alanna pretended to pout, looking dissatisfied. "Helen, why do you always catch me off guard? It’s not fair, I want one too!"
The three of them got dressed and left the room. The meteor shower had ended, and it was time to prepare to leave the underground bunker. However, the massive amount of radiation left behind by the meteor posed a problem. The survivors of City 22 couldn’t easily go outside. Moreover, all the roads in City 22 had been destroyed by the impact of the meteor, making it impossible to use any vehicles.
Walking out of the city would take a very long time.
Only at the city’s boundary could they use vehicles without restrictions. This was the biggest challenge for all the survivors of City 22.
Radiation suits were in short supply, and now they couldn’t get any more supplies, so they had to purchase the suits from survivors in other cities. However, the prices had been inflated to exorbitant levels. Survivors from other cities were taking advantage of this opportunity to make a fortune.
Helen suddenly said, "Do we need to sell some of the hot air balloons?"
But then she realized that she might have asked a stupid question. These survivors had no other way to leave the radiation zone and would most likely starve to death if they didn’t find a solution. They couldn’t afford the high prices for radiation suits.
But Helen soon realized that Waldo might have a different plan. "Helen, don’t worry. My idea is actually the same as yours," Waldo said with a mysterious smile.
Helen looked at him in surprise.
Waldo shrugged and said, "I still have plenty of hot air balloons. Selling them to fellow survivors in the same city won’t hurt. Besides, there’s no need to sell them at a sky-high price."
Alanna was pleasantly surprised. "Really? If the price is a bit lower, it will definitely be popular. After all, most people can’t afford those sky-high prices for radiation suits."
Radiation suits were indeed expensive. Even with all of Waldo’s resources, he found the prices outrageous.
However, they were now essential for the survivors in City 22. People were willing to do anything, even selling their belongings, to buy them.
However, now that Waldo had the hot air balloons, they had a better choice. Waldo posted a message in the chat channel.
"Everyone, I have a large number of hot air balloons available, along with a complimentary bucket of gasoline. You should know the value of this item. No more talking, contact me if you need one. First come, first served."
The survivors who had managed to survive in the ruins of City 22 were engaged in a heated exchange of insults with survivors from other cities.
Suddenly, they saw Waldo’s message and were shocked. They had known Waldo’s true identity for a long time since the information had spread all over City 22.
Now, they were more interested in the hot air balloons Waldo mentioned. They knew that this item was life-saving.
Everyone was excited.
"10086, is what you said true? Do you really have hot air balloons?!" someone asked Waldo. Many survivors were accustomed to calling him 10086.
Waldo replied, "When have I ever lied? I’m not like those con artists who promise everything but deliver nothing."
Another person said, "Calling him 10086? This is Waldo! Right, Waldo!"
Waldo waved his hand dismissively. "Okay, no more flattery. If any survivors need to purchase hot air balloons, feel free to contact me directly. I won’t say they’re cheap, but I promise they’re reasonably priced."
The survivors were filled with excitement.
Another survivor said, "Waldo, you’re amazing! You truly are the number one boss in City 22! I respect you!"
"Me too! I respect you!" someone else chimed in.
Waldo smiled and said, "Alright, stop buttering me up. If anyone needs hot air balloons, contact me in private. I can’t say they’re very cheap, but I assure you, they’re offered at a fair price."
"Wow, Waldo is the best! He’s come forward at such a critical moment and given us a way out. Thank you!" another survivor exclaimed.
The survivors of City 22, who had managed to survive until now, were busy exchanging insults with survivors from other cities. When they saw Waldo’s message, they were shocked. Before this, they had already known Waldo’s true identity, as the information had spread throughout City 22. They were more interested in the hot air balloons that Waldo mentioned.
