Apocalypse - Infinite Resource System
Chapter 144: News of death
[Guard Camp Communication Group]
Abby: Dear brothers, just a moment ago, the camp leader successfully recruited Mr. Waldo, who can eliminate mutant plants. From now on, we will be partners.
Because Mr. Waldo needs a material called Star Grass to clear mutant plants, the camp leader asked me to convey his intention. All members of the guard camp, starting today, put all your efforts into collecting Star Grass.
Message conveyed, awaiting replies.
Sapphire: Second Platoon received!
Just less than a minute after Abby’s message was sent, the Second Platoon leader immediately responded.Inside the first platoon of the guard camp, a burly man grumbled and complained.
"Sapphire, damn , can’t do anything right, yet he’s the first to respond!"
Soon, he replied in the group as well.
Clifford: First Platoon received!
Jerom: Received!
Jerom is the deputy leader of the guard camp, deeply trusted by Camp Leader Delgado.
Just like the soldier Abby, both of them were new recruits brought by Delgado from the old world.
After coming to the post-apocalyptic world, they started the guard camp together. After sending the message, Abby reported to Delgado.
"Reporting, Camp Leader. The message has been sent to the group, and all members have replied."
Delgado nodded.
"Good. Waldo, let’s continue our conversation from earlier."
While Abby’s message was being sent, Delgado and Waldo discussed Waldo’s hiring salary.
This detail needed to be finalized sooner rather than later.
Delgado didn’t want it to be postponed, creating unnecessary friction.
"Considered it and stated his compensation."
"Delgado, I don’t need much. Just give me some rare metals. Fifty pieces of S-Alloy will be sufficient."
Delgado frowned.
"So few?"
Delgado understood Waldo quite well.
In City No. 22, Waldo left an impression of a wealthy and ostentatious man.
Fifty pieces of S-Alloy might be a substantial sum for others, but to Waldo, it was trivial.
Waldo smiled, "Yes, fifty pieces of S-Alloy are enough."
What he truly valued was the Star Grass.
S-Alloy and the like were just embellishments, things he had no interest in.
Delgado pondered for a moment before saying, "How about this? One hundred pieces of S-Alloy and A-Alloy."
Though A-Alloy had little use at the moment, it was still a rare alloy. You won’t lose by holding onto it, Waldo."
Waldo’s heart skipped a beat.A-Alloy, isn’t that the special alloy needed to make combat robots?Although it’s already circulating in the market, it’s currently in an awkward position due to its unclear purpose.
However, with the precedent set by S-Alloy, some survivors kept A-Alloy in reserve, just in case.
Waldo calmly replied, "Alright, if you insists on raising the compensation, then one hundred pieces of S-Alloy and A-Alloy it is. Once I gather enough Star Grass, I’ll assist the guard camp in resolving the mutant plant crisis."
Delgado laughed heartily and shook Waldo’s hand.
"Waldo, we’re counting on you to resolve this crisis. Otherwise, the guard camp might have to relocate."
Delgado’s words were not unfounded.
The guard camp’s current situation was not optimistic.
Even though they were one of the two major forces in City No. 25, they were under immense pressure.
Their territory was shrinking, leading to gradually diminishing supplies.Developing new territory occupied by zombies would also consume significant resources. With every move they made, they were walking on thin ice.
A small mistake could lead to their downfall at the hands of Gold Blade Gang.
Delgado’s main concern was that Gold Blade Gang was in the same predicament.
They were facing similar pressures, and both sides were desperate to gather resources.
Waldo exuded confidence, saying, "Don’t worry, Delgado. Since I’ve promised to help the guard camp with the mutant plants, I’ll definitely resolve it."
Though Waldo suspected Delgado was excessively friendly, as he said, he would keep his word.
Delgado wanted to say something more, but suddenly, Waldo’s home assistant system interrupted them.
The residential assistant prompted, "Respected master, an unidentified survivor is detected outside the gate."
Waldo furrowed his brows.
"Why’s it so lively today?"He then checked the surveillance.Another stranger.
However, this person seemed somewhat similar to Leonard.
An idea sprouted in Waldo’s mind.
Most likely. And by Delgado’s side, he noticed the newcomer and immediately revealed the person’s identity.
"Duncan, he’s here too?!"
Waldo tentatively thought about it. It made sense.
He was quite the desirable target, and Gold Blade Gang wouldn’t ignore him.
But did Duncan not know that his brother, Leonard, was already dead by Waldo’s hand?
Waldo said, "Delgado, shall we go out and meet this Duncan together, Brother Chen?"
Delgado was thinking the same thing.
He wanted to see Duncan’s reaction when he found out.
"Alright, let’s go out together."
Outside the villa’s gate, Duncan, accompanied by his personal secretary, rang the doorbell.
Ding dong. Here they come.Waldo stepped out.
Seeing Waldo, Duncan smiled from a distance and said, "I am Duncan, the leader of the Gold Blade Gang. I’ve come to visit Mr. Waldo."However, he then froze.Because, behind Waldo, another burly man emerged.
This man, even if he turned into ashes, Duncan recognized him. After all, he was Duncan’s lifelong enemy, Delgado!
Could it be that he was preempted again?
Duncan felt annoyed. He didn’t expect to arrive so early, yet he still missed his chance.
Delgado had arrived even earlier!
Waldo said from behind the gate, "Mr. President, you’re a little late."
Delgado also said with a smile, "Duncan, Waldo has agreed to join our guard camp. You can give up on that idea!"Duncan sneered.
"What attractive offer can your guard camp provide?"
"Just a group of muscleheads training all day. What do they know about winning hearts?"
Ignoring Duncan’s remarks, he continued, "Waldo, our Gold Blade Gang is always in need of talent. Your ability to eliminate mutant plants is truly impressive. Here’s the deal: whatever compensation your guard camp offers, we’ll offer twice that!"
Duncan maintained a smile on his face. The offer he made was undoubtedly generous. It would be hard for an ordinary person not to be tempted.
Waldo’s expression was a bit strange at this moment. Judging from Duncan’s expression, he seemed unaware that his younger brother had already died. Moreover, he died at Waldo’s hands.
If Duncan had known about his brother’s death, he wouldn’t have made such an expression. Even if he was pretending, the underlying resentment couldn’t be completely concealed.
However, Waldo had no intention of saying more and simply declined. "Duncan, I’m not a two-faced person. Since I’ve agreed to join the guard camp with Delgado, I won’t go back on my word."
Duncan frowned. At this point, only Waldo could eliminate the mutant plants. Unless all hope was lost, Duncan was unwilling to give up such a recruitment opportunity.
"Waldo, is there really no chance for our Gold Dagger Brotherhood?" Waldo shook his head.
"Alright then, I’ll be heading back. However, the doors of the Gold Dagger Brotherhood will always be open for you, Waldo. We welcome you changing your mind! Farewell!" Duncan glanced at Delgado, snorted coldly, and left in his car.
Suddenly, Delgado asked, "Waldo, what do you think Duncan’s reaction would be if he knew that Leonard died at your hands?"
Waldo shrugged. "Who knows? I’m not him."
Duncan sat in his car, already forming a different plan in his mind. Since Waldo had joined the guard camp, he was now an enemy to Duncan. Well, if it was the enemy’s path they were taking, then they should use the tactics of an enemy.
Waldo could eliminate mutant plants; perhaps he possessed some special antidotes. While the Gold Dagger Brotherhood couldn’t recruit Waldo, they could try another approach – attacking Waldo and seizing those antidotes capable of eradicating the mutant plants.
Ring, ring, ring! Duncan’s thoughts were interrupted by an incoming call. He felt unusually restless today, sensing that things weren’t going smoothly and that it might not be a good idea to go out.
"Hello, what is it?" Duncan’s voice was indifferent.
The voice on the other end sounded trembling. "M-Master, Leonard is dead!"
Upon hearing the news, Duncan’s fingers turned cold, and he felt as if his strength had been instantly drained. Childhood memories rushed through his mind like a carousel. His younger brother, Leonard, only two or three years old, was always causing trouble. As his older brother, Duncan often cleaned up after him.
People often say that an elder brother is like a father. Their parents were busy with business, and although they were wealthy, they never really disciplined their sons. This led to Leonard growing up as a typical spoiled child. Duncan, on the other hand, was the epitome of the obedient son from a wealthy family, excelling in everything he did.
However, this didn’t affect their brotherly bond. Duncan treated his brother well, even helping him take the blame for his misdeeds. Whenever Leonard got into trouble, Duncan would take the responsibility when their parents questioned them.
After the world fell into chaos, Duncan quickly established himself through force and strength, while Leonard continued his troublesome ways. Duncan turned a blind eye to his brother’s misconduct, even though he was well aware of it. Now, he was gone?
Could this really be Duncan’s brother?
Who dared to do this?
"Master, Master?"
The voice on the other end grew nervous. Had their leader fainted upon hearing this news?
Duncan clenched his fist, his knuckles turning white and even slightly blue. He suppressed his anger and grief, asking in a deliberate, measured tone, "Who... who killed my brother?"
Duncan refused to believe that Leonard had brought this upon himself. He was certain someone else was responsible. He had warned Leonard countless times not to venture into the zombie-infested areas.
The fact that Leonard had stayed within the Eastern City District, waiting for Waldo, showed how obedient he was. Furthermore, he was accompanied by elite members of the Gold Dagger Brotherhood and had advanced combat supplies from Duncan himself.
Someone capable of killing both Leonard and his guards couldn’t be an ordinary person. Following this lead shouldn’t be too difficult.
"We have some leads," the voice said, "we’ll soon have more information."
Duncan’s tone turned cold as ice. "Investigate! Find out for me immediately. I want answers today. If I don’t have a list of names by today, you can expect your heads to roll!"
Duncan ended the call abruptly and turned his head to the side, not uttering another word. The driver and his personal secretary in the car dared not speak either.
The car was enveloped in silence, broken only by the sound of their breathing. It wasn’t until they reached the headquarters of the Gold Dagger Brotherhood that his personal secretary broke the silence.
"Sir, we’ve arrived."
Duncan made a noncommittal sound. He opened the car door without waiting for the driver and walked straight to his room. He didn’t even go to the conference room for the morning meeting with the senior members.
His personal secretary took his place in the meeting room and gave a brief account of the situation. The members of the Gold Dagger Brotherhood couldn’t help but sigh. It wasn’t for Leonard’s death, but for themselves. They knew how deeply Duncan cared for his younger brother. With Leonard gone, it was inevitable that they would have to turn the Eastern City District upside down to find the murderer.
And in the end, they would be the ones working tirelessly, bearing the brunt of it all. A slight mistake might even lead to punishment.
