Chapter 147: [Bonus Chapter]Guard Camp

After entering the house, Waldo poured a cup of hot tea for Delgado. Delgado had come over today, was it just to visit me? Delgado hesitated in his speech, then laughed awkwardly.

"What? Can’t I come to see you?" Waldo smiled without saying a word. Delgado touched his nose and said, "Waldo, you’re really something. Indeed, I came today to bring you Star Grass."

Just a few days ago, after Delgado left, he gathered all the warriors from the Guard Camp to collect Star Grass. They even temporarily halted other tasks and mobilized everyone. In just a few days, they had collected a considerable amount of Star Grass.

Even if Waldo hadn’t been attacked by the Golden Blade Gang, Delgado had intended to bring Star Grass to find Waldo these past couple of days.

Waldo’s expression brightened. He didn’t expect the Guard Camp’s efficiency to be this fast. He had thought it would take at least a couple of weeks.

Indeed, it was Delgado’s military background that made him so efficient in his actions.

Delgado took out the Star Grass and asked, "Waldo, take a look. Is this the kind of Star Grass you need?" Actually, there was only one type of Star Grass. However, just to be sure, he wanted to confirm.

Waldo accepted the Star Grass and with just one look, he nodded. Yes, this was the right kind.

"Delgado, how much Star Grass did your Guard Camp collect?" Delgado took out a foam box from his backpack and placed it on the coffee table. "This entire box is filled with it. We’ve done our best to collect it, but the yield is quite low. We only managed to find this much."

Waldo’s gaze flickered as he stood up and opened the foam box containing the Star Grass. Four rows of ten, six layers in total. A total of 240 Star Grass plants. This enormous number greatly exceeded Waldo’s expectations.

"Waldo, is this enough?" Delgado looked worried when Waldo remained silent and expressionless. He was afraid they might not have enough Star Grass, which could directly impact the Guard Camp’s interests.

Waldo picked up a Star Grass plant and weighed it in his hand before saying, "It should barely be enough. However, you better continue collecting just to be safe. We don’t want to run out of the herbicide for the mutated plants."

Delgado, relieved, nodded and said earnestly, "Don’t worry, once I go back, I’ll have the others continue collecting. We’ll keep searching. You know, Waldo, thank you so much for helping us get rid of the mutated plants."

Waldo touched his nose and coughed. "You’re welcome, Delgado. It’s not a trouble. I’ll do my best to assist the Guard Camp in clearing out the mutated plants."

Delgado burst into laughter. "No trouble? It’s me who’s troubling you. You’re helping us so much by eliminating the mutated plants."

Waldo smiled. "Well, if you put it that way, then it’s no problem at all."

Delgado chuckled. "It’s really not, and don’t worry, we’ll make it up to you."

Waldo smirked. "I’ll be looking forward to it."

After the conversation, Waldo left to prepare the specialized herbicide using the Star Grass.

Once Waldo had finished making the herbicide, he returned downstairs to find Delgado waiting impatiently.

Delgado eagerly stood up when he saw Waldo. "Waldo, you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this day."

Waldo gave a faint smile. "It probably hasn’t been that long. After all, the mutated plants only emerged a few days ago. They’re a product of the same time period as the destruction of City 22."

Delgado scratched his head. "Well, it’s felt like forever. If these mutated plants can be cleared, it will indeed solve a big problem."

Waldo glanced at Delgado and spoke gently, "Delgado, rest assured. My herbicide should work fine. You don’t have to worry too much."

Delgado felt a little embarrassed, knowing that his intentions had been somewhat transparent. He had deliberately said those things, hoping to influence Waldo’s actions. He hadn’t even seen the so-called herbicide, and he wasn’t sure if such a potent strain of mutated plants could truly be dealt with.

Waldo continued, "I have no reason to deceive you. I will help the Guard Camp clear out the mutated plants, but of course, it’ll come at a cost."

Delgado nodded, feeling relieved that Waldo was taking the matter seriously. "I trust you, Waldo."

Waldo smiled. "Great. Let’s not waste any more time. Shall we head to the Guard Camp now?"

Delgado eagerly agreed, and they both left the house and got into a car.

Delgado couldn’t hide his excitement. "Waldo, you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this moment!"

Waldo chuckled softly. "It can’t have been that long. After all, the appearance of the mutated plants is only recent."

Delgado scratched his head. "Well, it felt like an eternity. If we can get rid of these mutated plants now, it will really solve a huge problem."

Waldo glanced at Delgado and reassured him, "Don’t worry, Delgado. My herbicide should do the job. You don’t need to be so anxious."

Delgado’s feelings had indeed been quite transparent, and Waldo had picked up on them. He continued, "I have no intention of deceiving you. I’ll help the Guard Camp eliminate the mutated plants, but there will be a fee for my services."

Delgado nodded, feeling a mixture of relief and gratitude. "I trust you, Waldo."

With a smile, Waldo said, "Excellent. Let’s not waste any more time. Shall we head to the Guard Camp now?"

Delgado eagerly agreed, and the two of them left the house and got into a car.

Delgado quickly said, "I was being narrow-minded. I shouldn’t have been suspicious. Waldo, don’t take offense."

Waldo laughed heartily, "Don’t worry, Delgado. I’m not the type to slack off over something so minor. Besides, it’s only natural that you’re looking out for your team’s interests. If I were in your position, I’d do the same."

Upon hearing this, Delgado felt an instant connection. "Waldo, your words really resonate with me. Even though we haven’t known each other for long, I feel like we’re on the same wavelength."

Waldo grinned, "Well, I did use the old world’s sales techniques to butter you up. Saying what you like to hear, who wouldn’t do that?"

Waldo patted Delgado on the shoulder and continued, "Delgado, what I need are allies, not enemies. I genuinely like you, and I hope we can maintain this cooperation."

Delgado blinked, and Waldo smiled faintly, "I mean I like your character."

He resisted the urge to kick Delgado off the car, but he managed to hold back, considering it was Delgado’s vehicle. Delgado was straightforward, that much was certain.

However, as an ally, he was the perfect choice. Delgado was a genuine person, and for this purpose, he was ideal.

"I see," Delgado seemed a bit disappointed unexpectedly.

Waldo’s right eyebrow twitched, "You’re a tall guy, around 1.8 meters, and yet you’re showing this kind of disappointed expression. What’s going on?"

Waldo had faced zombie hordes without fear. He had stood up to Alanna and Helen’s tag team attacks without fear. But looking at Delgado in this manner made him shiver.

The conversation halted, and Waldo turned his gaze to the window, enjoying the scenery along the way. The zombies in the Eastern District had been cleared out, and the Guard Camp and the Golden Blade Gang had divided the area between north and south. Waldo was aware of this.

However, as he gradually saw the Guard Camp’s strongholds, he was still taken aback. Automatic defense mechanisms, high-strength walls, electrified fencing... Waldo couldn’t help but compare it with his own house’s defense system. Surprisingly, his own house had a slight edge. After all, he had energy shields and combat robots, incredibly powerful assets. However, that’s not to say the Guard Camp’s defenses were subpar. On the contrary, Waldo felt they were just slightly behind. Their defensive equipment would be considered top-notch in any city.

Waldo also thought about the Golden Blade Gang. If they could stand toe-to-toe with the Guard Camp, their defenses shouldn’t be lacking either.

"Waldo, we’ve arrived at the Guard Camp," Delgado said, breaking Waldo’s reverie.

They both got out of the car.

Waldo saw the words "Guard Camp" hanging on the gate and then noticed two guards on duty. He felt a bit dazed.

"Commander!"

Their voices were organized and resounding.

However, Delgado suddenly kicked one of the soldiers and scolded impatiently, "Didn’t I say it? If you need to use the restroom, just go. Don’t stick to the rules. It’s fine if at least one of you is on duty."

"Your face is turning white from holding it in. If we’re attacked, you’ll be running and peeing at the same time!"

The exposed soldier blushed. "Yes! I’ll be right back!"

He rushed to the bathroom in a hurry.

Delgado led Waldo into the Guard Camp, smiling and saying, "Waldo, don’t mind it."

Waldo observed the militarized management of the Guard Camp and nodded appreciatively. Every soldier here was training, and they were extremely professional. It was like night and day compared to any other team he had seen before. The Guard Camp’s team-building seemed to be exactly what Waldo had envisioned for a large-scale survival team in a post-apocalyptic world: strict discipline, safeguarding team interests, mutual respect, and care between superiors and subordinates.

Waldo heard Delgado’s words and smiled. "How could I mind? I actually think you’re a good leader, very caring toward your subordinates."

Delgado burst into laughter. The fact that he was praised by Waldo made him quite happy; it was very gratifying.

After the laughter subsided, Delgado said with emotion, "In the old world, I made a living this way. When I came to this post-apocalyptic world, I gathered my former subordinates and cultivated new talents. It’s a taste of the hard work I put in back then. For these young guys, I treat them like my younger brothers. I have to set strict standards for them."

Waldo nodded in understanding. Unexpectedly, Delgado spoke so emotionally.

Just as Waldo was about to speak, the commotion in front of them interrupted.

"Let me through!"

"Vice Commander, you can’t. The Commander is receiving guests. We need to wait in the conference room."

"Get out of my way! I’m looking for that so-called guest. Isn’t it Waldo? As Vice Commander, do you think I don’t know?"

A short-haired, sturdy man was being stopped by two soldiers, and a heated argument ensued. It wasn’t until he saw Delgado and Waldo that he stopped.

Delgado’s face darkened, and he scolded, "Jerom, get over here!"

The short-haired man was none other than the Vice Commander of the Guard Camp, Delgado’s trusted right-hand man, Jerom.

Jerom walked over and greeted Delgado, "Commander."

Delgado still wore a stern expression. "What were you shouting about just now? Say it again!"

He was genuinely angry. He couldn’t believe that his own deputy was arguing so openly in front of Waldo, especially about something related to Waldo.

Jerom spoke firmly, "Commander, I don’t know what nonsense Waldo told you, but he’s been delaying for so long, surely he’s afraid of exposing his true nature!"

Delgado was about to respond, but Waldo interrupted, "Delgado, I’m here to clear the mutated plants. There’s no need to say more."

Jerom burst into laughter. "At this point, you still want to deceive and cheat? Do you think we at the Guard Camp are all easy targets? Let me tell you, if you can’t clear the mutated plants, what are you planning to do?"

"Jerom!" Delgado was genuinely angry now. If he drove Waldo away now, where else would he find a survivor who could clear the mutated plants?

However, Waldo remained calm, though his tone was cool. "Vice Commander Jerom, what do you plan to do if I can clear the mutated plants?"

Jerom laughed, "If you really can clear the mutated plants, I won’t question your methods!"

Waldo was taken aback by this response and glanced at Delgado. He couldn’t help but mutter, "Delgado, is there something wrong with this Vice Commander of yours?"

Waldo gestured toward his own head.
