Apocalypse - Infinite Resource System
Chapter 152: Counterattack
Waldo’s combat suit was now drenched in blood, but his condition was remarkably good. This was not only due to the sharpness of his energy pulse sword but also thanks to his own ability, Cloak.
Waldo didn’t mind showcasing his ability in front of all the members of the Golden Blade faction. After all, in the next second, he would be reaping the lives of those who had witnessed it. He charged towards Mark and directly thrust his sword into Mark’s chest. The energy pulse sword emitted a brilliant light. When Mark fell, his chest had turned pitch black. He had intended to use his weapon to block, but he couldn’t match Waldo’s speed in drawing his sword. The dagger he held was still not in position when Waldo’s sword pierced his chest.
The casualties within the Security Camp were severe, but in the end, they won the battle in a gruesome manner. The Golden Blade faction had been defeated. Almost none of the members who participated in the siege survived, from the Vice Leader of the faction down to ordinary members.
Delgado, clutching his gunshot wound on his right arm, approached Waldo. He was relieved to have survived the battle, and some injuries were insignificant to him. As long as he was alive, everything was manageable.
"Waldo, how are you?" Delgado asked, concerned about Waldo’s well-being.
Waldo glanced at Delgado and shook his head. "I’m fine. What about your wound? Is it serious?"
Waldo was wearing his combat suit, reinforced even further by West’s protection. It was clear that they were operating on a different level of power. How could he possibly be injured? Waldo’s look at Delgado seemed to convey that his own injury was inconsequential, and he said, "It’s alright. How about you? Is your wound alright?"
Delgado moved his injured arm slightly, indicating that it wasn’t a significant issue. He replied, "I’m good now. When do we depart?"
At this moment, Delgado already regarded Waldo as their backbone. Waldo’s performance had completely convinced them. Most of the enemies were taken out by Waldo and his combat drones, while the Security Camp’s soldiers dealt with only a small portion. They were fully aware of this fact, so their awe and admiration for Waldo were mixed with respect.
"Waldo, let’s go now. Gather the remaining combat-capable soldiers in the Security Camp, prepare weapons and ammunition, and we’ll set off," Delgado said earnestly.
Waldo nodded. "Sure, let’s go now." He turned to the group and said in a commanding tone, "Everyone, get ready. We’re heading to the Golden Blade faction’s headquarters. If anyone is in no condition to fight, you can stay back and rest. Those who are ready to fight, step forward!"
None of the Security Camp soldiers stepped back. Their determined eyes, even as they bled and had bandages wrapped around them, spoke of their unwavering resolution.
Delgado looked back at Waldo and said with determination, "All Security Camp soldiers, get ready to move!"
Waldo glanced at the group, paused for a moment, and then said firmly, "Let’s move, everyone."
"Understood!" the soldiers replied in unison.
At the Golden Blade faction’s main base, Duncan had returned. He didn’t rebuke the loyal members who had brought him back, instead letting them escape while the members left behind in the base and his loyalists were in a panic. He realized that he had underestimated Waldo’s strength.
If it weren’t for Waldo, the victor of today’s battle would undoubtedly have been the Golden Blade faction. The battle had been on the verge of their victory, but Waldo’s appearance had tilted the balance in favor of the Security Camp.
Duncan felt a sense of powerlessness. In the chaos, members of the Golden Blade faction began to scatter.
And then, a series of explosions shattered the fortified walls of the Golden Blade faction’s base. Waldo had appeared, and his assault transformed their seemingly invulnerable stronghold into rubble. The Security Camp’s soldiers marveled at Waldo’s might, as his relentless onslaught left them astonished.
Waldo’s gunfire had created a breach in the base’s defenses, and he then returned the armored vehicle to its original form.
Duncan and his remaining loyalists saw this in disbelief. There was no retreat now, and they knew it.
Waldo, with a composed expression, was suddenly before them. Duncan watched him, took a deep breath, and his loyalists sprang into action, trying to protect him.
"Protect the leader! Leader, run!" they shouted.
But Waldo was faster than them, already charging into their midst. The loyalists valiantly attacked Waldo in a final act of self-sacrifice. However, Waldo, appreciating their loyalty and bravery, retaliated decisively. One by one, they fell under his gunfire.
Only Duncan remained, seated in his chair.
Duncan let out a sigh. "I underestimated you, Waldo."
Waldo took off his helmet and calmly replied, "Now you realize, but it’s not too late."
Duncan nodded and said with a bitter smile, "Indeed. If I had known the outcome would be like this, I wouldn’t have acted so rashly. I would have waited for the right moment to strike."
"Facing someone like you is truly suicidal," admitted Waldo, despite his dislike for Leonard.
Waldo had never thought of becoming enemies with the Golden Blade faction. It was Leonard who brought trouble upon himself and pushed me to this point," he said.
Duncan nodded with resignation. "I know, I understand my brother better than anyone. But, Waldo, if someone killed your brother, would you not seek revenge for his mistake?"
After a brief pause, Waldo replied, "I believe my answer would be the same as yours."
"Exactly, that’s why I don’t regret it," Duncan said with a smile.
"Go ahead and shoot," Waldo said, raising his gun and aiming it at Duncan.
Bang!
Duncan slowly collapsed to the ground. However, it wasn’t Waldo who had fired the shot. It was Delgado, who had arrived on the upper floor. When he saw Duncan, he immediately took aim and fired a shot at his nemesis. He was avenging his fallen comrades.
Delgado pulled the trigger again, and simultaneously, he cried out, "Die!"
The magazine of the M4 rifle emptied. Duncan’s body was riddled with bullet holes, making him nearly unrecognizable. Delgado knelt on the ground, a massive and robust man who wept uncontrollably and laughed maniacally, a mix of sorrow and relief.
The struggle between the Golden Blade faction and the Security Camp finally came to an end on that day. The Security Camp naturally assumed control over the former territories of the Golden Blade faction and officially became the rulers of the East District.
As people were still processing this shocking news, Waldo had already left the Golden Blade faction’s headquarters. According to the prior agreement with the Security Camp, he took away 80% of the Golden Blade faction’s resources. After the intense battle, not much was left.
He found a Ferrari sports car and drove it home. Perhaps due to having the windows down too often or from wearing his combat suit for an extended period, he felt a chill.
"West."
"What’s the matter, my master?" West responded promptly from the passenger seat.
Waldo continued, "Do you think the reason we continue to fight is to protect the ones we care for, even if it means hurting those they care about?"
West’s blue eyes shimmered with light. "I apologize, my master, but I don’t know how to answer that question. However, if you’re seeking advice on how to fight, I can provide you with a series of instructional videos."
"Yeah, you’re just a combat robot. Asking you is pointless. I must be losing it," Waldo chuckled at himself.
Still, he couldn’t help but remember how beautiful life used to be. Despite the tiredness of the old world, there was always hope. In the post-apocalyptic world, no one knew how long they would survive.
"Master, do you wish to return to the old world?" West’s question hit Waldo like a bolt of lightning.
Most survivors probably dreamed of returning to the old world. Yet, many had forgotten or neglected to consider how they had ended up in this apocalyptic reality. Suddenly, Waldo had a vague sense of direction but couldn’t quite put it into words. It seemed that this world held many mysteries that would take time to unravel.
As he pondered, he unintentionally arrived home. Waldo got out of the car, opened the door with a smile, and said, "Time to go home and have a meal. Only when well-fed can we tackle the next challenges."
