Arcane: The Gods Want Me to Pick a Route

Chapter 245: Fighting!

"What are you still standing around here for?"

"Uh... I'm supposed to protect you?" Fura stammered the moment Lissandra suddenly called her out. Her mouth really had been frozen by Lissandra, but she could still manage to make sounds.

"Protect me?" Lissandra looked at Fura, a little helpless, then said coldly, "Get lost."

"Yes..." Fura sounded pretty miserable about it.

I mean, with the question asked like that, other than saying she was staying behind to protect Lissandra, what else was she supposed to say?

Was she supposed to admit that she wanted to stay and watch Logan fight too? She had already annoyed Lissandra. If she actually said that out loud, then she probably would not just end up with a frozen mouth for a week. More likely, she'd be turned into a human ice sculpture and displayed outside the Frostguard Citadel for the clan to admire.

Yeah... Fura had her pride too, all right? She was an old Iceborn who'd lived for centuries.

So even though she felt helpless, she could only retreat.

But before leaving, she did hear Lissandra speaking to herself.

"That technique... figures. What else would you expect from an Icathian? Saijax..."

"But what's going on with that swordsman? The sword aura he's sending out is clearly resonating with the material realm, and yet it can still wound the soul? He can cut into the spirit realm with his sword?"

Lissandra was watching with open interest, occasionally muttering her own observations.

And at that moment, inside the ice tomb Lissandra had created, the tall, broad purple figure was fighting against the slightly green-tinted one. Meanwhile, a third figure kept circling around them several times, trying to join in, but never managing to find the right opening. He stood there scratching at himself in frustration, his face full of anxiety and embarrassment, practically bouncing like an agitated monkey.

"Pfft, "

Outside, Lissandra let out a laugh when she saw that.

She drifted back to her throne, sat down, leaned forward slightly, and kept watching what was happening inside.

Logan's current predicament reminded her of something he had once said.

You Freljord people really are unbelievable. With attitudes like yours, no wonder you can't even find the right moment to step in.

At the time, Lissandra had not fully understood what Logan meant by that, but looking at the scene now... the phrase clearly fit here too.

You've got to know when to jump in, Logan.

Bang!

"Excellent, Yi, you really are exactly the kind of opponent I've always wanted!"

Yi's swift blade danced wildly, weaving countless beautiful sword flowers that forced Jax backward, though Jax only took a few steps.

Neither of them was using their fundamental powers. They were fighting solely with martial skill and technique.

As Jax sprang back in, Yi smiled faintly and gave a light flick of his wrist. Instantly, the longsword split into countless overlapping shadows, flowing with brilliant light as they slashed toward Jax's face.

Real and unreal overlapped, impossible to distinguish.

Seeing this, Jax laughed loudly, then suddenly raised his left leg and kicked the wrapped weapon that had just been freed from its cloth bindings, revealing the true form of the last light of Icathia. Then he hooked its tail end with the three fingers of his right hand while spreading his arms wide, his left hand grasping the forward part of it.

At first glance, the motion looked like he was handling a spear.

But the next moment, as the sword shadows closed in, Jax let go with his left hand, then flicked upward with two thick fingers, while his right hand slid naturally into place and caught the weapon at its midpoint.

Holding the last light in front of him with his right hand, borrowing the force of the strike he had just delivered to its front end, Jax spun it smoothly into motion.

The flame blurred into a circle.

Jax blocked every one of Yi's attacks while pressing forward at the same time, both hands moving in front of him as he whirled the last light into an impenetrable screen.

Seeing that, Yi had no choice but to retreat. In a contest of raw strength, he was far inferior to Jax, and as for their weapons, the thing in Jax's hands was obviously no ordinary tool either.

So Yi leaped back lightly, his eyes fixed intently on Jax's shoulder line, searching for the perfect chance to counterattack.

"You're already pulling out the flashy spin move?" Logan stood off to the side, twitching with impatience. The moment he saw Jax use that technique, his eyes lit up.

Then he tried to copy it himself, lifting Aatrox up.

"Logan, what are you doing? You're trying to imitate him? Go ahead then, try it. Kick me, just try kicking me!"

Logan ignored Aatrox's yelling and raised his leg, copying Jax's movement.

At the same time, he suppressed his own strength, but the problem was, he just could not achieve the same perfect defense as Jax.

It was not that Aatrox was interfering. Logan genuinely just could not do it. He was using roughly the same amount of force as Jax, and his speed was about the same too, but whenever Logan tried spinning Aatrox around, he kept getting the feeling that the sword was about to slip free from his grip.

Was it because a sword and a staff were fundamentally different shapes?

No... if Jax were holding Aatrox, he would absolutely be able to spin him into a perfect defensive wheel too.

After all, Jax was the Grandmaster at Arms. He used the last light of Icathia, that giant torch-pillar of a weapon, not because it was especially convenient, but because it was the final symbol left behind by Icathia, and so he had to carry it with him.

So Logan watched with total focus, terrified of missing even the smallest detail.

And while Yi and Jax were deep in the fight, both of them were also keeping an eye on Logan.

When they saw that after a few failed attempts to force his way in, Logan had simply chosen to stand to the side, watch them fight, and start imitating their movements, both Yi and Jax were caught off guard.

Now, to put it bluntly, what Logan was doing was stealing moves, and that was not the sort of thing either Jax or Yi would do.

Because they were masters.

But Logan, someone they had already started thinking of as one of their own, was doing exactly that.

And worse, he was doing it right in the open.

Inevitably, both Jax and Yi found themselves a little distracted watching Logan copy them, because they were genuinely curious. Did Logan not have any pride as a strong fighter at all?

How had he so easily made up his mind to steal other people's techniques?

When he saw Logan imitate another one of his sword thrusts, Yi finally could not help himself. Blocking Jax's attack at the same time, he said, "When you apply force, pay attention to rotating your hips, Logan. Watch my movement carefully. This strike, the force comes out like this."

As he spoke, Yi flicked his wrist, and the longsword drove forward with a spiraling force straight toward Jax's face.

Logan copied the thrust.

Watching him, Yi frowned. "No, that's wrong. If you want the sword to carry rotational force, then you have to learn the right way to generate power. Just swinging your arm and snapping your wrist isn't enough."

"That's a sword that only goes straight in and straight out. The force is strong, but there's no finesse in it."

"Your shoulders, your feet, your waist, every part matters. Don't just think about stabbing the target in front of you. Imagine you're using a whip. You're not driving it forward, you're cracking it at the target."

Yi demonstrated it again.

Jax snorted when he saw that. Why should Logan only learn your techniques?

And you're really going to start teaching him right in front of me?

I admit you're strong, Yi, but when it comes to knowledge of martial technique, if Jax calls himself second, who in the world dares call himself first?

The next moment, the last light of Icathia crashed downward again, and Jax shouted, "Watch closely, Logan. That move of mine you were trying to copy earlier works on the same principle as the strikes Yi just showed you."

So Logan turned to watch Jax and began imitating him too.

It was true that he had never trained in any of this systematically, but with a soul strength comparable to a god's, Logan possessed an absurd learning ability. The moves he copied still lacked the full essence, but he had undeniably captured some of the feel.

And that alone was enough to make both Yi and Jax look at him differently.

So, while Logan remained completely unaware of it, Yi and Jax exchanged a glance.

What do you think?

Want to test him?

All right. Let's test him.

With that silent agreement, after clashing one more time, Jax and Yi both rushed Logan at once.

The last light of Icathia and the Wuju blade came at him together. Logan froze for the briefest moment, then instantly understood what they meant.

Facing Yi, he used the sword technique Yi had just taught him for defense.

Facing Jax, he used the movement Jax had shown him.

"Damn! That hurts!" Logan cried out as Yi slapped the side of his wrist with the flat of his blade.

"No, too slow!" Yi moved in tight beside Logan, reversed his grip on the sword, and pressed the hilt against Logan's waist. "Sink your waist lower. Remember how that part of your body feels when it generates force. Feel the tension in your muscles when your waist rotates."

With Yi's guidance, Logan subconsciously thrust out a sword.

And suddenly, the Darkin greatsword, which should have felt overwhelmingly heavy, became as light as a falling leaf.

In Logan's eyes, Aatrox's thrust looked slow, but in the next instant, the tip of the blade was already right in front of Jax's face.

Jax leaned back to avoid the giant sword, then raised the last light and smacked Aatrox aside. At the same time, just like Yi, he closed the distance with Logan, lifted a leg, and gave Logan's right leg a light kick, subtly changing his stance.

"Sink your waist. Feel the strength the earth gives your legs. Use the wrist snap to drive the hilt, and pay attention to the angle of the rotation."

Then, with another jab, he struck Logan's right forearm.

Logan winced in pain, but at the same time, he felt a force travel into his body, carrying through him and into Aatrox, who had been knocked upward by the last light.

And then...

Logan really did start spinning Aatrox.

Right now he was still holding back his strength, and Aatrox was genuinely heavy to him. That was the reason his imitation had kept coming out wrong. If Logan had truly gone all out with his power, then copying eight or nine-tenths of the move would have been no problem.

But that kind of imitation would only have been Logan using brute force to fake the effect of Jax and Yi's technique. It would not mean he actually understood the technique itself.

Now, however, with Yi and Jax teaching him at close range, Logan quickly began to grasp something.

This was personal guidance from the two strongest human fighters alive, and Logan was not stupid to begin with. His adaptability was absurd, and before long, with Yi and Jax helping him, he found the right feeling.

"Again!"

Excited now, Logan looked at Yi and Jax and shouted.

The two men looked at each other and laughed at the same time.

"I get it now. You said you wanted a three-way spar, but really, you came here to steal our moves."

"It's not stealing," Yi said, shaking his head. "I already promised Logan I'd teach him Wuju swordsmanship."

Jax looked surprised, then cautiously asked, "Can I learn that sword art too?"

"Of course. As long as someone sincerely wants to learn and is willing to endure hardship, I'm willing to teach," Yi said with a smile.

Jax snorted twice and said, "Then I won't take your swordsmanship for free, Yi. I'll teach you my own grandmaster-level methods of force generation."

Yi nodded. "Good."

Logan, meanwhile, said nothing.

The only thing he really had to offer was the wind blade arts, and maybe those might have some value to Yi, but to Jax?

To Jax, that would basically be a toy.

Fortunately, neither Yi nor Jax had expected to learn anything from Logan in the first place.

Because if you were only looking at technique, Logan really was a total novice.

Lissandra watched silently for quite a while, then yawned. She was starting to get a little bored.

Because Logan had gone from being completely pummeled by the two human powerhouses at the start to gradually developing enough skill to fight back.

He was still getting hit, of course, but Lissandra could see that if Logan had enough time, he would eventually change all of that.

Logan was a human who possessed the power of laws, something even Jax did not have. And once someone had mastered the power of laws, wielding the foundational power of Runeterra became much easier.

Which meant Logan would soon fully grasp the skills those two were currently teaching him.

And that made it boring.

Compared to watching Logan grow into mastery, Lissandra found it much more entertaining to watch him get beaten up.

Seeing that the fun was basically over, Lissandra clicked her tongue, reinforced the ice one more time, then closed her eyes and entered dreamwalking once more.

How much time had passed?

Half a day? A full day? Two days?

Logan had no idea.

All he knew was that Yi and Jax were just as excited as he was.

Yi and Jax were excited because they had discovered that Logan truly was strong. When they had first met him, Jax had looked down on him. Logan had possessed incredible power, but no idea how to use it.

But Jax would not say that anymore, because Logan had already grasped a meaningful amount of force-generation technique.

And Yi was excited because he had realized Logan had already touched upon some of the deeper principles of Wuju swordsmanship.

But Logan had never even meditated once. π‘“π‘Ÿπ‘’π˜¦π“Œπ‘’π‘π‘›π‘œπ˜·π‘’π˜.π’Έπ˜°π‘š

That... hell, Yi did not even want to think about it. For Logan to possess the sword within without ever once entering meditation, just how terrifying did his soul strength have to be?

And Logan?

Logan was excited because...

Damn, fighting felt incredible.

It felt way too good.

Right now, Logan felt like he was playing some kind of character-progression game, because the system's real-time feedback gave him a massive rush of positive reinforcement.

[Unique sword intent detected. Analyzing. 41% complete.]

But that was not even the main point.

The main point was that even though these two skills were not fully completed yet, they were both orange-red.

Orange corresponded to legendary-grade spirits. After thinking it over, Logan figured that meant roughly the level of LeBlanc, Xin Zhao, Zed, and Shen.

And red?

The abilities Ahri and Kindred had granted him were both red, which meant mythic-grade spirits, the demigod tier.

And now, the things Jax and Yi were teaching him were at the absolute minimum legendary-tier, and maybe even brushing against the threshold of demigod level.

Logan even found himself wondering whether the reason they had not truly crossed into demigod territory was because Jax and Yi possessed demigod-level combat power, but not actual divinity.

Which was why the color came out orange-red?

Either way, the fact that he was about to gain new skills, and such powerful ones at that, filled Logan with satisfaction.

And it proved that his earlier guess had been right.

Getting stronger was not something that only depended on the system. He could grow stronger through his own effort too.

The thought filled Logan with excitement.

So after taking another strike from Jax's staff and stumbling back several steps, Logan raised Aatrox again and rushed forward.

"Come on, keep going!"

...Wait. Was there something I'd forgotten?
