Born as a Witch
Chapter 416: In search for portal starts
The small house was quiet, the warm glow from the hearth blending with the faint sunlight that filtered through the windows. Lira set her vials carefully on the wooden table, letting the soft clink of glass punctuate the rhythm of her work. With the new plants she had gathered from the forests and roads of this strange land, she carefully tested combinations, her fingers tracing intricate movements of elemental energy to calm any potion that might react unpredictably.
Some of the herbs had volatile qualities, bursts of magic that could make a mixture froth or spark uncontrollably. But Lira, with practiced hands and focused control, could settle any potion into balance, coaxing the liquid to hum steadily instead of erupting in chaotic energy.
By nightfall, the table was lined with rows of finished potions: glimmering health tonics, protective charms, and subtle brews designed to sharpen senses or ease fatigue. The soft bubbling and faint glows filled the room with a comforting, almost hypnotic rhythm.
Renkai had drifted off to a corner, quietly watching, occasionally murmuring advice or warnings, but mostly giving her space. Lira felt a rare peace, immersed in creation rather than survival.
When dawn broke, she carefully packed a small box of potions—some she had already sold in the market, others brand-new—and attached a letter explaining the shipment. With a subtle elemental charm to ensure safe travel, the box was sent through a magical courier to the Tower of Magic.
By the next day, the payment arrived. A neat pile of gleaming leaves—more than enough to sustain them for weeks—was accompanied by a letter from the Tower Master. Lira read it carefully:
"We will not interfere with your travels, so long as you honor the contract. If you accept the follower rat assigned behind you, he will act to protect you as well. He will not trouble you if you maintain discretion."
Lira folded the letter carefully, glancing at Renkai. "Seems... they want to keep tabs, but they’re willing to let us move freely if we follow the deal."
Renkai nodded, his jaw tight. "As long as we control the contact. We don’t need surprises. Just... make sure we don’t meet that rat unnecessarily."
Lira picked up her quill and wrote back in neat strokes: "Understood. Fine if the follower rat remains unseen. We will honor our agreement."
Later that morning, Rose led them to a quiet room in the back of the house, a small space with low light, fragrant with dried flowers and herbs. Lira lowered her voice, her curiosity finally getting the better of her.
"Rose... have you ever seen anything like a portal? A strange swirling thing in the air, shimmering or hidden? Something that can move someone instantly across space?"
Rose paused, brushing a lock of fur back from her face. "I’ve traveled many roads, seen strange places, and met odd travelers... but I’ve never seen anything like that. Some magical paths are hidden, subtle, and invisible... it’s possible, but I’d never know it was there unless I stumbled right into it. Why do you ask?"
Lira tapped a vial thoughtfully. "I’ve seen traces of... energy, unusual flows in the air. It could be dangerous, or a shortcut... I’m not sure yet. But if one exists nearby, it might explain how some beings from the Tower appear in unexpected places—or how someone could disappear suddenly."
Rose tilted her head, ears twitching. "Hidden magic like that... it’s rare. You’d notice something off even if it’s subtle. But yes, it’s possible. If it exists, it could be anywhere—trees, rivers, ruins... even beneath the cobblestones, if a clever mage set it there."
Renkai’s voice cut softly into the quiet room. "So we keep moving, stay alert, and watch for... anything unusual. Agreed."
Lira nodded, setting the vial aside. "Yes. And for now... we focus on creating, preparing, and traveling safely. If a portal exists, we’ll handle it if it shows itself."
The room was calm, but the air carried a faint hum—subtle, almost imperceptible. Lira couldn’t tell if it was from her potions, the lingering magic of the herbs, or something hidden beyond their sight. Either way, she felt a thrill of anticipation. The world beyond the town, beyond the Tower, was full of mysteries. And now, with Rose as a guide and the road ahead stretching into unknown lands, she could finally explore them safely... or at least cautiously.
The morning light spilled softly through the small windows of Rose’s house. Lira and Renkai had finished organizing their potions, and now Rose entered the cozy room carrying a thick, leather-bound journal. She placed it carefully on the table, its cover worn but well-kept.
"This," Rose said, opening it with care, "is my journal of travels. I’ve charted roads, towns, forests, ruins, and strange happenings I’ve encountered along the way. Some are curious, some dangerous, but all worth noting. I thought it might help you in your search."
Lira’s eyes flicked over the pages, each filled with neat drawings, symbols, and annotations. Some pages depicted mountains with glowing crystals, forests with unusual tree formations, ruins of old stone temples, and even odd markings on roads she didn’t recognize.
"This is incredible," Lira murmured, tracing a finger along a sketch of a crumbling tower partially hidden by mist. "There’s so much recorded here... so many places we could investigate."
Rose leaned forward, eyes bright with curiosity. "Exactly. If there’s a portal, I think it would be near ruins, areas of residual magic, or where strange events have been reported. What should we search for first? Any points that catch your attention?"
Lira carefully tapped a few spots on the map, selecting ruins partially hidden in forests, peculiar clearings where magic had been reported, and areas where strange natural phenomena had been noted. Her hand hovered briefly over a shimmering lake marked with strange symbols.
"We’ll start with these," she said softly, trying to keep her tone casual. "Ruins, strange places... areas with unusual magic. That’s all you need to know."
Rose looked at her expectantly. "You know more than that, don’t you? What exactly are we searching for? A magical relic? Another hidden city?"
Lira shook her head, choosing her words carefully. "I can’t say more. Some things... it’s better they stay unknown, even to you. We only need to search for the places, investigate them, and see if anything... unusual shows itself."
Rose’s ears twitched, a faint frown crossing her features. "I see. But if you don’t tell me why, how will we know what’s worth searching? I’ve seen strange things before... but portals? That’s something different entirely."
Lira glanced down at the map, then back at Rose. "Even if a portal exists here, using it is... complicated. Star dust, energy flows... even knowing it’s there doesn’t make it simple. And changing anything in this world could break rules... rules I cannot risk breaking."
Rose studied her silently for a long moment, whiskers twitching. "So... we search, but we don’t ask why. We explore these places carefully, and we hope we find what we’re looking for. Understood. You’re... very cautious."
"I have to be," Lira replied softly. "It’s not just about finding it. It’s about staying safe, respecting the rules, and not causing problems that can’t be fixed. Even if you’ve seen a portal before, what I need... star dust... is difficult enough to collect, and it’s delicate. We have to be precise."
Rose nodded slowly, closing her journal. "Then we follow the map, stick to the spots you’ve marked, and investigate carefully. I’ll help however I can, but I won’t push for more than you’re willing to tell me. Safety first... and secrecy too."
Lira allowed herself a small smile, grateful for Rose’s understanding. "Exactly. That’s all anyone needs to know. Just... we search, we observe, and we stay cautious. That’s enough."
Renkai, silent until now, finally spoke, voice low and firm. "Then let’s plan the first stop, pack supplies, and move carefully. No distractions, no unnecessary risks. If the Tower sent someone to watch, they might follow... even if we think we’re safe."
Lira nodded, glancing at the carefully marked map she had drawn. The ruins, the lakes, the strange clearings... each one could hold something extraordinary—or dangerous. And as much as she longed to explain why, she knew she could trust only herself with the true purpose of their search.
With a deep breath, she closed the satchel containing her potion tools. "Then let’s move. We have a journey ahead, and every step counts."
Outside, the rose-horses pawed the ground gently, petals drifting in the morning breeze. The road awaited, winding into forests and hills, toward ruins, mysteries, and the hidden energy that might reveal the portal—and with it, the next challenge of their journey
...
The morning air in the town market was crisp, carrying the mingled scents of baked bread, fresh herbs, and the faint tang of magic lingering from the previous day. Lira and Renkai moved alongside Rose, whose presence drew the attention of several mouse-like merchants and townsfolk as she prepared her display of fabrics and garments.
"Good morning!" Rose called cheerfully, arranging her clothes with practiced hands. "Enchanted fabrics and garments, perfect for travelers, traders, and adventurers alike!"
Lira watched quietly, fascinated by the way Rose interacted with the townsfolk. She could sense the subtle enchantments woven into each piece of fabric—threads that resisted wear, cloaks that adjusted to the wearer’s temperature, and scarves that shimmered faintly in sunlight. Coins, leaves, and small magical tokens exchanged hands with ease, the crowd murmuring appreciatively at Rose’s wares.
Meanwhile, Lira moved through the market with her satchel, eyes scanning stalls for rare herbs, roots, and seeds. She stopped at a tiny merchant’s stall, where rows of glass jars contained powdered flowers, tiny glowing seeds, and rare dried leaves she had never seen before. She carefully selected a few, examining their textures, smells, and faint magical traces.
"These should do nicely," Lira murmured, adding them to her satchel. "Renkai, help me make sure nothing gets crushed."
Renkai nodded, steadying the satchel as Lira continued her purchases. Together, they moved from stall to stall, gathering new plants and seeds that could be used in potions or charms during their travels. Occasionally, Lira paused to make small notes in her notebook, sketching the plants and writing down their properties, careful to remember their effects for later experiments.
As the morning waned into early afternoon, Rose waved at Lira and Renkai. "I think that’s enough business for now. I’ve sold everything I intended, and it’s time we move forward. Staying too long in one town is never wise, especially with travelers like us. New roads await."
Lira nodded, closing her satchel and checking that all her new purchases were secure. "Agreed. We’ve gathered what we need. Time to continue our search."
Renkai glanced around the bustling market one last time, keeping an eye out for anyone who might be following them. "Everything looks normal... for now. Let’s not linger."
Rose led the way to the chariot, and the rose-horses pawed the ground impatiently, petals scattering with each movement. Lira and Renkai climbed aboard, the morning sun warming their backs, as the town receded behind them and the road stretched onward, winding through forests and hills toward the first ruin Lira had marked on her map.
The journey ahead was uncertain, but they were prepared—equipped with potions, seeds, knowledge, and the guidance of Rose. Each step brought them closer to the mysterious places where magic lingered, and to the portal Lira sought, hidden somewhere in this strange and dangerous world.
