Born as a Witch
Chapter 421: Out of Shadow Forest
The chariot moved slowly, carefully navigating the narrow, winding path through the Forest of Shadows. The trees loomed tall and close, their trunks dark and smooth, branches weaving together above them so the sunlight barely pierced through. Shadows clung stubbornly to the ground, pooling in corners, shifting with every step of the horses.
Lira kept her senses alert, her eyes scanning the undergrowth for movement, listening to the faint sounds of the forest—the rustle of leaves, the quiet chirping of hidden creatures. The fluffy puffs in her spatial bag stirred softly, curious but calm, as if sensing the tension outside.
Renkai’s hand rested lightly on hers as he leaned forward slightly, scanning the road. "Almost through," he murmured, voice low. "Feels... like the forest doesn’t want us here."
Lira nodded, tightening her grip on the reins she held loosely. "It’s... cautious. Watching. But not hostile. We just have to respect it."
Slowly, the road began to widen, the trees thinning just enough that more sunlight spilled through the canopy. Patches of golden light danced on the path, chasing the shadows back. The air felt lighter, warmer, almost welcoming compared to the dense quiet of the deeper forest.
Rose adjusted the reins, guiding the horses forward with practiced ease. "See that?" she said quietly. "The deeper we get out, the easier it is. Shadows shrink once the forest senses no danger."
Lira exhaled, letting her shoulders relax slightly. "Finally. It’s almost like the forest itself exhales with us."
The puffs in her spatial bag chirped softly as the light increased, stretching slightly in the protective space. Lira smiled faintly. Even for them, the world outside the shadows seemed safer, brighter.
By the time the chariot reached the edge of the forest, the trees were more widely spaced, sunlight flooding the road in long, warm beams. Lira and Renkai leaned back, feeling the tension of the journey ease, their eyes taking in the open sky ahead.
"Back on the road," Renkai said, a small smile tugging at his lips. "No more lurking shadows... for now."
Lira nodded, carefully checking her space bag one last time. The tiny fluffy creatures were safe, warm, and undisturbed. "We made it," she said softly. "And we can finally move forward."
Rose nudged the chariot onward. "The next stretch of road is calmer. Plenty of places to stop, maybe even a town ahead. We can catch our breath, gather more supplies."
The Forest of Shadows receded behind them, silent and patient, while the road ahead promised new discoveries, new creatures, and new challenges—but for the moment, Lira, Renkai, and their small magical companions could travel with a rare sense of ease.
The road stretched ahead, lined now with trees that seemed ordinary, their shadows shorter and less menacing. The forest behind them gave way to open fields where sunlight spilled freely, warming the ground and lifting the weight of tension from their shoulders.
Rose guided the chariot steadily, her rose-maned horses moving with a gentle rhythm. She glanced back at Lira and Renkai, a small smile on her face.
"We’ll stop at the next town," she said. "I’ll need to restock some materials for my sales—fabrics, dyes, maybe a few new designs. You two can stretch your legs, gather anything you need, or just rest."
Lira nodded, her eyes flicking toward the road ahead. "Good. We’ve been traveling long enough... and I can check the local flora for anything unusual. Might find a new plant or seed for my potions."
Renkai chuckled softly. "You never stop working, do you?"
"I never really can," Lira replied with a small smile, glancing down at her spatial bag. The little fluffy creatures stirred softly inside, chirping in contentment. "But at least they’re safe and calm. That’s the main thing."
Rose nodded, satisfied. "The town isn’t far now. A few hours’ ride. After that, we can plan our next steps. It’ll be a chance to see if the roads are safe, gather supplies, and maybe even hear news of anything unusual nearby."
As the chariot moved forward, the sunlight warmed them, the road opened up, and the tension of the Forest of Shadows fell completely behind. For the first time in days, the journey felt lighter, almost peaceful, with the promise of the next town giving them a small but much-needed sense of normalcy.
Lira looked toward Renkai, squeezing his hand lightly. "It feels... good to have a moment to breathe."
He smiled, nodding. "Yes. And we’ll be ready for whatever comes next."
The chariot moved steadily onward, carrying them toward the town, the road bright and welcoming, their small companions safe, and their journey continuing with cautious optimism.
The chariot rolled into the town slowly, and immediately the travelers were struck by its unusual inhabitants. Horses with eight legs moved gracefully along the cobbled streets, their movements surprisingly coordinated, while other creatures had humanoid bodies but long horse ears that twitched constantly, listening to every sound. The town itself seemed alive in an odd, magical rhythm, strange but not hostile.
Rose guided the chariot to a stop near a large inn-like building at the center of the town, its walls of polished stone and wood glowing warmly in the afternoon sun. "Here we are," she said. "I’ll send someone to show you to your rooms. Rest, freshen up, and then we’ll discuss supplies."
A young creature, with four legs and horse-like ears atop its head, appeared almost instantly, bowing slightly. "Follow me," it said in a soft, melodic voice, guiding Lira and Renkai through the inn’s wide hallways to their rooms.
The rooms were simple but comfortable—soft beds, sturdy tables, and a small balcony overlooking the bustling streets below. Lira set down her satchel, her eyes catching the faint glow of a flower stall across the square.
Renkai sat on the edge of the bed, shaking his head slightly. "I... I’m still shocked by the creatures here," he said quietly. "Horses with eight legs... beings with horse ears... it’s... I’ve never seen anything like it."
Lira smiled faintly, unpacking her journal and tools. "This world is full of wonders," she said softly. "Every town has its own... rules, its own magic. We’ve seen forests with shadows that watch, ruins with sentient trees, now this... unusual townsfolk."
Renkai leaned back, eyes wide as he watched a group of eight-legged horses trot past below. "It’s... almost overwhelming sometimes. I feel like every place we stop, we have to adjust again."
"Exactly," Lira agreed. "But that’s why we observe. We take notes, we understand, and we move carefully. Every creature, every being... tells us something about the land, its magic, its rules."
Renkai nodded slowly. "I trust you to guide us, Lira."
She gave him a small, reassuring smile. "And I trust you to stay alert. Together, we’ll handle whatever comes next."
Outside, the town continued its unusual rhythm, creatures of all shapes and sizes moving gracefully through streets and squares, while inside the inn, Lira and Renkai prepared to rest, gather their strength, and plan their next steps in this strange, magical place.
After a long afternoon of travel and settling into their rooms, Lira and Renkai finally sank into chairs by a small wooden table, the soft light from the balcony casting warm stripes across the floor. Outside, the bustling town continued in its strange, rhythmic way, eight-legged horses trotting past and creatures with horse ears moving gracefully among the market stalls.
Rose joined them, leaning slightly on the table with a quiet, conspiratorial smile. "I’ll quietly ask around about a portal," she said softly, her voice low enough not to draw attention. "See if anyone here has heard anything... unusual. I’ll keep it subtle, make it sound like casual curiosity about old legends."
Lira nodded, opening her satchel to check the small pouch of potion ingredients and notes she had brought with her. "That’s perfect. While you do that, Renkai and I will shop for some small items we need—herbs, seeds, maybe tools for potion-making or minor repairs for our gear."
Renkai stretched his legs under the table, glancing out the balcony at the busy streets. "It’s going to feel strange, shopping among... them," he murmured, motioning at the town’s odd inhabitants passing below. "Eight-legged horses, horse-eared beings... everything here is unfamiliar."
Lira smiled faintly, rubbing the space bag at her side. "Yes, but observe carefully. This is how we learn about the land and its rules. Everything we see can teach us something useful, even if it seems strange or whimsical."
Rose tapped the table lightly. "I’ll meet up with you after I ask a few questions. No rush. Stay alert, and don’t draw too much attention while you’re shopping. This town... its inhabitants are friendly enough, but unusual things happen when outsiders poke around too eagerly."
Renkai gave a small nod. "Understood. We’ll be careful."
With that, the three made their separate plans: Rose would move quietly through the town, using her charm and knowledge to gather information about any hidden portals or unusual occurrences, while Lira and Renkai would navigate the bustling market, seeking the supplies they needed and observing every detail of this strange, magical town.
Lira glanced down at her space bag, a small smile tugging at her lips. The fluffy creatures inside stirred softly, content and safe. "Even in this place, we’re prepared," she whispered to herself. "And we’ll keep learning, one step at a time."
The afternoon sun cast a gentle glow over the balcony, marking the start of their careful exploration and subtle investigation.
