Chapter 423: Gathering plan

Lira said towards Renkai and shook her head, her gaze fixed on the magical pool. "No... I need to explore a bit more. Gather some plants, perhaps a few creatures... and we need to map down a few things before we come back. This place... it’s important."

Renkai gave a slight nod, trusting her judgment. "Alright," he said quietly. "Just... be careful. And stay close."

They retraced their steps slowly, marking landmarks in their memory and in Lira’s journal. Strange plants clung to the damp stones, some with faint glows of their own. A few tiny, fluttering creatures flitted near the crystals—delicate, winged things that seemed curious about the firelight but kept their distance. Lira noted them carefully, making sketches in her journal for later study.

Once they had gathered enough observations and collected samples they could safely carry, Lira lowered her fire slightly and took one last look at the portal shimmering across the pool. The faint pulse of magic felt alive, waiting, patient, as if it had been expecting them.

"Let’s go," Lira said finally, a mix of satisfaction and awe in her voice.

Renkai stepped close to her as they made their way out of the cave, the glow of the water and crystals fading behind them. Outside, the sunlight hit them warmly, the mountains standing silent and imposing around them.

They paused for a moment, taking deep breaths of the cool mountain air. Lira carefully checked the creatures and plants she had collected, ensuring they were secure in her spatial bag, and Renkai adjusted their gear.

"Next time we come," Lira said, her eyes still on the mountains, "we’ll be ready. And we’ll remember every detail."

Renkai nodded, and together they set off down the path, leaving the cave behind but carrying the knowledge and magic of its secrets with them.

As Lira and Renkai stepped out into the bright daylight, the chill of the mountain air brushing their faces, they saw Rose pacing near the cave entrance. Her hands were fidgeting with something simmilar to fruit and her eyes were wide with worry.

"Oh my—" she exclaimed the moment she spotted them. Her voice was hurried, almost breathless. "I saw a winged creature flying out of the cave! Are you... are you both okay?"

Lira smiled softly, trying to ease Rose’s tension. "We’re fine," she said, holding up her hands as if to show no harm had come to them. "It was curious, but not hostile. Just observing us."

Renkai stepped closer to Rose, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We were careful," he said calmly. "The creature didn’t attack. We kept our distance and respected its space."

Rose’s shoulders sagged slightly, relief mixing with lingering worry. "I was so afraid," she admitted quietly. "I didn’t want anything to happen to either of you. That cave... it’s not natural. Anything could happen inside."

Lira nodded, pulling her satchel closer. "We understand. That’s why we didn’t stay too long. We mapped, gathered plants, and made notes—but we left before disturbing the deeper areas too much."

Rose studied them, still cautious but slowly calming. "You’re lucky... very lucky. That portal... and the creatures inside... I wouldn’t have gone in. I’m glad you’re safe."

Renkai smiled faintly. "Thanks for waiting for us. Your concern means we have another pair of eyes on the outside. That helps."

Lira patted the space bag gently. "And everything we gathered is safe. The creatures, the plants... none of them were harmed."

Rose gave a small nod, finally allowing herself to relax fully. "Alright," she said, her tone firmer. "Let’s get back to the chariot. The sun won’t wait, and we still have a road to travel."

Together, the three of them moved back to the chariot, the mountains silent behind them and the forested path ahead waiting for their next steps.

Lira settled into the chariot, flipping open her journal and laying it beside her. "Rose," she said, her eyes bright with curiosity, "we need to gather more strange and rare plants. Places like that... they might hold ingredients unlike anything we’ve seen."

Rose nodded and reached into her bag, pulling out her well-worn travel map. She spread it across her lap and traced a finger along the winding roads, stopping at a region a few days’ journey from the mountains. "Here," she said. "The scenery changes drastically as you move farther. Sand stretches for miles, scorching under the sun. Hardly anything grows there—except for a few stubborn, unusual plants. Strange shapes, odd colors, and some... rare magical properties. I’ve never collected from there myself, but it’s worth a look if you’re determined."

Lira leaned over, studying the map carefully. Her eyes followed the winding trails, taking note of landmarks and river crossings, hills, and valleys. "Interesting," she murmured. "Plants that survive there must have unique properties. Heat resistance, perhaps elemental affinity... maybe something that could enhance potions or charms."

Renkai glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. "You really want to go to a desert-like place in the middle of scorching heat?"

Lira’s smile was soft but determined. "Yes. If we want rare materials, that’s where we’ll find them. And the journey will let us observe the land, see what other creatures survive there... it’s all part of understanding the world."

Rose pursed her lips, clearly wary but willing to follow. "It’s dangerous," she said quietly. "Sun is relentless, sand burns, and water is scarce. But if you insist... I’ll guide you there. I know the paths, places to rest, and where the oddest plants grow."

Lira nodded, her hand hovering over her satchel, feeling the warmth of the fire element within her. "We’ll prepare carefully. Enough water, protective gear, and we’ll move slowly. But I want to see it. There’s knowledge and power in these rare plants."

Renkai exhaled softly, then leaned back. "Alright. If you’re set on it, I’m with you. We’ll survive it together."

Rose rolled up the map carefully and tucked it into her bag. "Very well," she said, a hint of resignation in her tone. "The sandlands it is. I hope you’re ready for a long, harsh journey—and for seeing plants you’ve never dreamed of."

Lira’s eyes sparkled. "I am. This is exactly the kind of discovery I’ve been waiting for."

The three of them prepared for the next leg of their journey, the mountains fading behind them as the road stretched toward the distant, sun-scorched sandlands, promising new plants, rare creatures, and challenges unlike any they had faced before.

For days, the chariot rolled steadily along winding roads, the rhythm of the rose-maned horses almost hypnotic. At first, the landscape was still familiar—greens of the forest, moss clinging to rocks, and occasional patches of flowers along the roadside. Lira and Renkai observed everything carefully, jotting notes and sketches in their journals whenever they spotted unusual plants or creatures.

Gradually, the scenery began to shift. Trees grew sparser, their leaves smaller and tougher. Bushes replaced dense undergrowth, their branches prickly and resilient, as if they had learned to survive with less water. The soil turned harder, dustier, and the air grew warmer and drier. The occasional puff of wind carried the scent of dry earth and minerals, a reminder that life here was fighting to exist.

Lira’s eyes shone with curiosity at every new plant she spotted, scribbling descriptions and sketches, sometimes reaching into her satchel for small containers to store samples. Renkai walked beside the chariot when the path allowed, shielding her from the sun or helping her examine plants closely.

By the third day, the bushy landscape gave way almost completely to sand. The ground became pale and rough, with dunes forming gentle waves along the horizon. Sunlight poured down, relentless and scorching, making the air shimmer in wavering heat lines above the sand. Only the hardiest of plants survived here—small tufts with silvery leaves, spiny succulents, and strange flowering shrubs that seemed to soak the sun into themselves.

Rose, ever watchful, guided the chariot carefully, pointing out landmarks and warning of patches of unstable sand or hidden rocky ground. "These plants are interesting," she said, her voice low and measured. "They cling to life where nothing else will. You’ll find odd properties in them if you know what to look for."

Lira leaned forward, her journal open, carefully observing every detail. "Yes... the sun, the sand, the struggle to survive—it all changes the plants’ essence. Ingredients here will be unlike anything we’ve seen before." She paused, sketching a particularly bright orange bloom with spiny leaves. "These could enhance fire potions... or maybe make protective salves for heat or harsh environments."

Renkai shaded his eyes, glancing toward the horizon where sand stretched as far as he could see. "It’s beautiful... in a harsh way. But it’s going to be exhausting if we’re not careful."

Lira nodded, securing her satchel. "That’s why we move slowly, carefully. Every day, a little farther. Every plant, every creature, every observation... it counts."

The chariot continued onward, the forest behind them now only a memory, and the desert-like sandlands ahead promising rare discoveries, challenges, and the strange magic of survival in a harsh, unforgiving sun.
