Born as a Witch
Chapter 428: New plant species from first planet
The morning sun filtered softly through the dense canopy above as Lira, Renkai, and Rose resumed their journey. After the desert and open plains, the forest felt like a sanctuary—cool air flowing between moss-covered trunks, shadows curling along the undergrowth, and hidden streams gurgling quietly beneath thick ferns. Every step seemed to carry them deeper into a living, breathing world, where the hum of life was constant but gentle.
Rose guided the chariot slowly along the narrow path, shifting the rose horses and kakraje when the terrain required it. Their hooves and feet pressed lightly on the spongy forest floor, leaving no lasting mark, and the sound of their movement blended with the whisper of leaves and the soft calls of birds. Small creatures—tiny fox-like rodents, iridescent beetles, and chameleon-winged insects—peeked curiously from beneath roots and moss, then disappeared at the slightest movement.
Lira walked ahead of the chariot for a stretch, notebook in hand, keenly observing the flora around them. Twisted roots snaked across the path, some sprouting tiny, luminous mushrooms in shades of violet and amber. Leaves of strange shapes brushed against each other with the wind, releasing hints of spice, earth, and something almost metallic in scent. She bent down frequently, sketching and jotting notes, mentally cataloging each unusual plant.
"Look at this one," she said softly, pointing to a cluster of broad leaves that shimmered faintly in the filtered sunlight. She traced the veins with her fingers, noting a faint warmth emanating from the foliage, subtle but unmistakable.
Renkai leaned against a tree, watching her. "You always find the weirdest things," he murmured, a teasing smile on his face, though his eyes scanned the shadows around them. "I hope none of these bite or explode."
Lira glanced up, smiling. "If they explode, I’ll note it down too."
As she moved slightly to one side, something caught her eye—a dark shape among the lighter greens and golds of the forest floor. Her breath caught. There, in a small clearing bathed in a thin shaft of sunlight, was a flower unlike any she had seen before. Its petals were thick, bulbous, almost waxy, and deep violet that bordered on black. Even from a distance, a pungent stench reached her nose—so strong that it made her eyes water.
Renkai stiffened. "What is that?" he asked, instinctively stepping back. "Stay away from it—it looks... dangerous."
Ignoring the crinkle in her nose, Lira knelt carefully beside the flower, extending a hand slowly. Despite the repulsive odor, she felt a pulse of energy radiating from it, warm and firm beneath the petals. Fire and earth intertwined in its life force, a rare and potent combination that hummed through her senses.
"It’s... remarkable," she whispered. Her eyes gleamed with excitement. "Even though it stinks, I can feel it. There’s power here—something alive, something old."
Renkai frowned, shifting uneasily. "Old and stinky," he muttered, "doesn’t sound like my kind of plant."
But Lira only smiled, carefully inspecting the flower. She could already sense its potential: fruit, seeds, maybe even a potion ingredient unlike anything she had worked with before. Despite the smell curling her stomach, her curiosity was stronger than her hesitation.
"Don’t worry," she said, more to herself than to him. "This one’s going to be worth it."
The flower’s dark petals seemed to sway slightly, almost in rhythm with the forest itself, as if acknowledging her attention. Lira could feel that the forest around them—every moss-covered root, every hidden stream—was watching as well. Whatever this flower was, it had claimed this spot, and it would take care to learn its secrets.
And with that, she began preparing her tools, already thinking of how to study it without disturbing its natural magic. Renkai stayed close, hands ready to help, while Rose watched cautiously from the edge of the clearing, her curiosity and caution balanced in a careful watch.
The journey had brought them to many strange places, but here, in the heart of this living forest, they had discovered something that promised new challenges, new knowledge, and the sweet, hidden rewards that always seemed to follow those willing to explore.
Lira crouched beside the strange flower, her senses extending beyond the visible petals. She let her fire and earth elements flow gently into it, feeling its pulse, the warmth and steadiness of life intertwined. Carefully, she traced the roots with her fingers, noting how thick and sturdy they were, then turned her attention to something near the base: small, oval fruits, barely larger than her thumb.
The fruits glimmered faintly in the filtered sunlight, their skin smooth but oddly firm, like they had been polished by the wind. Despite the nauseating stench that made her nose twitch and her eyes water, Lira’s instincts told her they were worth examining. She plucked one gently and rolled it in her fingers, feeling a subtle warmth radiate from it.
Renkai took a cautious step back. "You’re... really going to taste that? It smells like it could knock me out before it kills me." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖
Lira gave him a small, confident smile. "I know what I’m doing. Trust me." She cut a tiny slice from the fruit and tasted it.
For a moment, her eyebrows lifted in surprise. Sweetness spread across her tongue, rich and layered, almost creamy in texture, as if the plant’s essence had captured sunlight and condensed it into flavor. Juiciness followed, balanced with a faint tang of earthiness that made the taste vivid and alive. The stench of the flower, she realized, was only a defense—designed to repel predators, while the fruit rewarded those who approached carefully.
Rose stepped closer, frowning slightly. "Lira... you need to be careful. Some plants with strong odors are poisonous. You shouldn’t just taste them without knowing."
Lira held up her hand. "I can analyze it. I can feel its essence. It’s safe, Rose. The stench is a warning, not a danger. And the fruit..." she smiled, tasting another tiny piece, "the fruit is perfect. Delicious and powerful."
Renkai shook his head, half-amused, half-exasperated. "Only you would sit in a cloud of stink and take notes while sniffing a flower that could be trying to kill you."
"I’m documenting," she said seriously, sketching the flower and its fruits in her journal. She circled the base, making notes about the roots, the soil, the sunlight that touched the plant, the faint warmth she felt in its essence, and how the flower itself seemed to vibrate with energy.
As the sun moved higher, she experimented carefully. She tasted small pieces, tested their texture, and even tried infusing a tiny scrap in water, observing how the essence spread and changed. Renkai leaned against a tree nearby, watching silently, occasionally shaking his head or chuckling at her methods.
Rose hovered nearby, clearly torn between fascination and caution. "If this really is what you think it is," she said quietly, "it could be... very valuable. But you have to be careful. The forest doesn’t give its treasures freely."
Lira nodded, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "I know. That’s why we take our time. This is rare, Rose. If we gather some of the fruit and seeds carefully, we can study it, use it for potions, maybe even cultivate it later."
Renkai finally stepped closer, examining the plant more carefully. "You really think it could be... something special?"
"It’s more than special," Lira said, placing a finger on the stem and closing her eyes, feeling its essence flow. "It’s alive. Strong. Balanced. Fire and earth combined. This flower... it chooses who can approach, and the fruit rewards those patient enough to notice."
For the next few hours, they worked carefully, moving with deliberate caution. Lira plucked a few of the fruits, testing their firmness, tasting just enough to ensure they were ripe. She collected tiny seeds as well, storing them in a separate pouch in her space bag. Rose helped by carrying samples, glancing nervously at the stinking flower but trusting Lira’s judgment. Renkai moved around the perimeter, scanning for any other creatures that might be drawn to the smell.
By late afternoon, Lira leaned back, smiling despite the lingering odor. "We’ve got enough for now. Enough fruit, enough seeds. This is going to be useful, maybe even revolutionary for potions or rare recipes."
Renkai shook his head in disbelief. "Only you could make a flower that smells like rotten eggs seem... exciting."
Lira laughed, wiping her hands. "It’s not the smell that matters—it’s the life inside. And this one... it has more life than most plants I’ve ever found."
As the forest shifted into early evening, golden light filtering through the canopy, the three of them packed up their findings carefully. The stinking flower remained undisturbed, its strong scent wafting through the clearing as if in warning to anyone else who might approach.
They had discovered something rare and strange, something that promised new possibilities—and with it, a new layer of wonder for the journey still ahead.
The next morning, the forest was alive with soft sounds—leaves rustling in the breeze, distant birds calling, and the faint gurgle of hidden streams. Lira crouched again beside the stinking flower, now more confident in her senses and the flower’s intentions. She carefully examined the fruits near its base, selecting only the ripest ones, their faint glow reflecting in her notebook as she marked each for later study.
"This one is perfect," she whispered, holding a small fruit in her hand. "Firm, full of essence, nothing bruised yet."
