Born as a Witch
Chapter 447: Jagged hole
Renkai walked slightly ahead, eyes scanning the horizon. "The closer we get to the crater, the more unstable this area feels. Watch your footing, Lira."
They pressed onward, navigating around glittering ridges that caught the sunlight in blinding flashes. Crystalline vines curled along the ground, some almost springy, others brittle. Lira paused to harvest a few edible crystal fruits that had formed on a low, square-shaped plant. The salty sweetness lingered on her tongue, and she quickly jotted notes in her journal, testing a method to crush and dissolve the harder crystals for juice.
Fluffy mewed again, a sharp, urgent sound, and darted slightly behind Lira. She glanced down and saw the little creature stiffen, ears pressed back. Somewhere in the distance, a faint shimmer flickered against the jagged horizon—shadows cast oddly by the crystalline landscape.
"Don’t worry," Lira whispered, picking Fluffy up and cradling it in her arms. "We’re almost there. I can feel the energy; the crater is close."
Renkai glanced back, noting her tone. "You feel it too?"
"Yes," she said, voice low, scanning the valley below. "Something massive happened here. This isn’t just a crystal forest... it’s a scar from some event."
As they descended the final ridge for the day, the massive crater came into view, its jagged spikes jutting violently from the ground. Sunlight caught them at every angle, throwing rainbows across the valley, but there was a harshness to it—a sense of chaos frozen in time. Fluffy nestled in Lira’s arms, shivering slightly.
Lira knelt and placed a hand on a nearby spike. Energy pulsed beneath her fingers, both warm and vibrating. "We need to camp here," she said. "We can’t rush in. Tomorrow, we’ll explore closer, see what’s in the center. But tonight... we observe, rest, and prepare."
Renkai nodded, setting down their packs. "I’ll keep watch. Nothing gets past me."
As the sun dipped behind the distant crystal peaks, the valley glimmered with a thousand sharp reflections. Lira set up a small resting spot on a flat shard, Fluffy curled against her chest, the cat mewing softly in contentment. Even amidst the beauty and danger, the warmth of companionship and safety brought a quiet peace.
Lira gazed at the jagged horizon, notebook in hand, and whispered, almost to herself, "Tomorrow... we see the heart of this crater."
Morning broke across the jagged peaks, and sunlight bounced off the crystals like a thousand tiny fires. Lira stretched, Fluffy yawning and mewing softly from her shoulder. Glint peeked out of her cloak, its eyes wide at the sparkling expanse before them.
Renkai adjusted his pack and surveyed the valley below. "We should move carefully," he said. "The closer we get, the more unpredictable the terrain."
Lira nodded. She crouched to test the firmness of a nearby shard, noting how it hummed faintly under her palm. "This is incredible," she whispered. "The energy here... it’s chaotic, but stable enough to walk. Almost like the valley itself is alive, remembering whatever happened here."
As they began their descent, small crystal formations jutted from the ground in odd shapes: spiky columns, smooth cubes, circular discs that spun slightly when brushed. Lira carefully collected a few of the softer edible crystals, testing methods to dissolve them into a sweet, salty juice. The harder crystals resisted, cracking under her elemental touch, but she smiled. "Experimenting is half the fun," she said, popping a tiny shard into her mouth. The salty flavor lingered, strangely refreshing in the dry air.
Glint twitched nervously, ears flattening as a distant shimmer moved across the valley. Lira paused, holding the small creature. "See that?" she murmured to Renkai. "There... something’s moving down there."
Renkai squinted. Tiny figures, barely larger than a rabbit, darted between the crystal spikes. Their translucent bodies reflected the sun, blending perfectly with the jagged terrain. "Crystal sprites," Lira guessed, observing their curiosity. "They’re harmless... mostly. But they’re attracted to the edible crystals. Fascinating."
Carefully, they navigated the twisting valley, stepping over fragile shards that cracked like brittle glass beneath their weight. Occasionally, a shard hummed or pulsed, sending small ripples through the nearby formations. Lira experimented, pressing her palms to them and sending soft waves of fire and earth energy to harmonize with the natural pulse. The crystals glowed faintly in response, resonating with her power.
By midday, the valley widened, revealing the edges of the massive crater. From this distance, the spikes seemed to erupt from the ground like frozen flames, jagged and chaotic. Lira’s breath caught. "It’s... bigger than I imagined," she murmured. Glint shivered in her arms, curling close.
They found a flat area surrounded by smaller crystal spires and set up camp. Renkai gathered wood-like mineral shards to create a makeshift hearth. Fluffy curled against Lira’s chest, purring softly, while Glint hid in the folds of her cloak.
As they rested, Lira experimented with the crystals she’d collected. Crushing, dissolving, and testing, she worked carefully to turn the hard shards into a juice-like substance. The process was slow but rewarding: the flavors were surprisingly complex, salty yet sweet, a taste unlike anything she had experienced before. She jotted notes in her journal, while Renkai kept a watchful eye on the shimmering valley.
Even as the sun set, the valley sparkled, each crystal catching the fading light. Shadows stretched long and strange, and Lira shivered slightly. "Tomorrow," she said softly, "we move closer. We need to see the center... the heart of the crater."
Renkai nodded. "I’ll be right beside you. Nothing gets past me, Lira."
Fluffy mewed in agreement, and for a moment, the valley seemed calm — though the pulse of chaotic energy from the crater hinted that true danger was only just beginning.
Dawn broke across the jagged peaks, sending slivers of light bouncing off every crystal in the valley. Lira tightened her cloak, feeling the familiar weight of her satchel filled with rare plants, seeds, and collected crystal fruits. Fluffy stretched and mewed softly from her shoulder, while Glint’s translucent body shimmered nervously beneath the folds of her cloak.
Renkai scanned the path ahead. "The terrain gets trickier now. The spikes are taller, sharper. One wrong step..." He trailed off, letting the warning hang.
Lira nodded. "I know. We move slowly. Every step matters." Her hands brushed over a low, circular crystal tree. It hummed faintly, pulsing in harmony with her elemental senses. She made a quick note in her journal and plucked a few small crystal fruits, tasting them carefully. Salty, sweet, almost creamy in texture, but harder than before. She wondered if she could finally dissolve enough to make a proper juice.
As they advanced, shadows flickered along the spikes. Tiny crystal creatures, translucent like Glint, darted between formations, curious but skittish. Lira knelt to observe them, sketching their forms and noting their behavior. "They’re attracted to the edible crystals," she whispered. "But they’re cautious... almost like they sense the danger here too."
Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed across the valley. One of the taller spikes fractured, sending a cascade of smaller shards tumbling down. Glint shrieked softly and leapt into Lira’s arms. Fluffy mewed sharply, tail bristling.
"Careful!" Renkai shouted, grabbing Lira’s arm. "This isn’t just beauty... it’s unstable!"
They scrambled to the side as a small avalanche of crystal shards skittered past. Lira felt the pulse of energy here stronger than before, a chaotic mix of fire and earth, almost alive. She pressed her palms against a nearby shard, sending a gentle wave of elemental energy to steady the vibration. The spike hummed in response, calming slightly.
After a tense few minutes, they continued, inching toward the massive central crater. The spikes here were enormous, jagged columns rising like frozen flames. Some were hollow, some solid; some spiraled in impossible shapes. The sunlight caught every facet, scattering rainbows across the valley floor, but the beauty was deceptive — the energy was wild, unpredictable, almost hostile.
Fluffy mewed nervously, curling against Lira’s chest. "It’s okay, little one," she whispered. "We’re almost there. We’ll be safe." Glint shivered in her folds, its tiny body pulsing with anxious energy.
By midday, they reached a flat plateau near the base of the largest cluster of spikes. The ground vibrated faintly, as if the crater itself remembered the force that created it. Lira knelt to inspect the crystals, feeling their energy surge. She could taste the faint mineral tang in the air and realized the edible crystal fruits here were even saltier, denser, almost like concentrated sunlight.
"This... this is incredible," she murmured, crushing a shard carefully in her palm. Juice seeped slowly, salty-sweet and warm to the tongue. "If I can gather enough, we can make a proper batch back at the Grove."
Renkai scanned the area warily. "Keep your senses sharp. This energy... it’s not just residual. Something lives here."
And indeed, as Lira continued her tests, the shadows of crystal spikes shifted. Tiny, glinting predators slithered between the formations, their bodies like polished quartz, eyes like deep amber. They paused, observing Lira and Renkai, assessing, curious but cautious.
Fluffy hissed softly, Glint bristled, and Lira smiled reassuringly. "We’ll be fine," she said, drawing a small protective circle with her elemental energy. "We just have to be careful and patient. Observe, record, collect — then retreat if needed."
As the sun dipped toward the horizon, the valley shimmered, alive with color, energy, and faint danger. Camp was set atop a smooth, flat crystal outcrop. Lira and Renkai shared a quiet meal of crystallized fruits and experimental juice, Fluffy nestled in Lira’s arms, and Glint hovering nearby.
The heart of the crater pulsed faintly in the distance, a reminder of both the beauty and peril of this strange, shimmering world. Lira’s mind buzzed with notes, experiments, and plans. Tomorrow, they would venture deeper, into the very core of the crater — and whatever waited there.
