Born as a Witch
Chapter 457: Dragon Town
"They’re... adorable," Lira whispered, kneeling to watch. One dragonling pirouetted mid-air, landing clumsily on a crystal that wobbled slightly, sending it into a roll across the platform. Fluffy chirped and darted forward, tail flicking with curiosity, but Serelyth held him gently back with a wing.
"Dragonlings can be tricky," Serelyth said, her voice tinged with amusement. "They’re fast, playful, and very... chaotic. But they’re clever. Watch how they interact with the crystals — see how they test balance, flight, and coordination."
One dragonling, scales glinting pale violet, zipped toward Lira, squealing a high, musical note. It landed gently on her outstretched hand, claws barely pressing into her palm. Lira giggled, holding it steady. "You little rascal... you’re testing me, aren’t you?"
Another dragonling swooped past, bumping the first one, and they tumbled in a playful blur of wings and scales. Lira laughed, letting herself be enveloped by their chaotic energy. Serelyth’s tail swept to nudge a particularly curious dragonling that had gotten too close to the edge of a floating shard.
"Careful," Serelyth warned gently. "They’re fearless... but gravity is different here. One wrong move, and they’d float off."
Lira tilted her head, studying the dragonlings’ movements. "They seem to understand the currents of air better than I do. Maybe I can learn from them." She stretched her hands, mimicking a swoop, and one dragonling followed her motion, twirling around her arms. Fluffy chirped again, clearly entertained.
Soon, the dragonlings began a game of chase around the floating rocks. Lira and Serelyth joined in, swooping through the air currents, spinning, and leaping between small platforms. Lira laughed so hard her stomach hurt, a sound Serelyth hadn’t heard from her in a long time — pure joy, unguarded and free.
One brave dragonling landed on Lira’s shoulder, nuzzling her cheek with its tiny snout. "Okay, okay... I see your tricks," she murmured, stroking its iridescent scales. Serelyth nudged her gently, a low rumble of approval.
For the first time since stepping into this sky world, Lira allowed herself to forget the shadows, the dangers, the rules she’d broken. Here, among dragonlings and floating islands, she felt light — a rider, a learner, a friend to creatures both small and enormous.
As the sun dipped behind distant floating peaks, painting the clouds in shades of amber and rose, Lira realized that these dragonlings weren’t just playful companions — they were guides. Watching them, she could understand the currents, the floating platforms, the delicate balance of air and gravity. And maybe... just maybe... they would help her discover secrets this sky world still hid.
Fluffy curled beside her, watching the dragonlings with wide, attentive eyes. Serelyth folded her wings with a satisfied rumble, letting Lira rest a moment on her scaled back. "Tomorrow," Serelyth said softly, "we explore further. But tonight... enjoy their mischief. Learn. Laugh. It will teach you more than any portal ever could."
Lira smiled, hugging the dragonling on her shoulder as the last light of the sky cast long, floating shadows across the crystalline surfaces below.
Serelyth spread her wings, landing carefully on a flat crystal platform, and glanced down at the dozen dragonlings circling them like a whirl of tiny, iridescent comets.
"Alright," she said, her voice carrying authority and warmth, "today, we’ll practice balance and air control. Follow me."
Lira giggled as Serelyth leapt into the air, wings catching the shifting currents. "Show them how it’s done!" she cheered.
Serelyth puffed her chest proudly, soaring up with grace only centuries of dragon flight could earn. But the dragonlings... had other ideas.
One violet-scaled creature shot past her tail and zipped between her wings, causing her to stagger mid-air. Another landed squarely on her back, clinging tightly, squeaking indignantly at being ignored. A third spun around her horns, fluttering its tiny wings so hard that a gust knocked her sideways.
"Enough!" she called, trying to maintain composure, though a slight trill of exasperation betrayed her. "Observe and replicate, little ones!"
The dragonlings, of course, did the opposite. They darted in all directions, bumped each other, and performed loops that would have made even a seasoned flyer dizzy. Serelyth groaned, landing with a heavy thud on a nearby floating rock. "They’re... relentless!"
Lira laughed so hard she had to hold her stomach. "Serelyth! They’re learning from you... in their own way."
Serelyth’s long tail swung like a pendulum, catching one particularly audacious dragonling mid-tumble and gently tossing it back into the air. "Learning my way is... apparently more complicated than expected," she muttered.
The dragonlings responded with a chorus of high-pitched chirps, squeals, and tiny gusts of wind, flying circles around her horns and claws. One landed on her nose, staring at her with wide, sparkling eyes. "You... are persistent," Serelyth whispered, rubbing her snout carefully, the dragonling clinging as if it owned her.
Lira crouched down, mimicking their movements, and whispered encouragements. The dragonlings darted to her side, landing lightly on her shoulders, weaving between her arms. She was their size now, small enough for them to test, playful and approachable.
Serelyth folded her wings with a sigh, eyes narrowing affectionately. "I have trained dragons for decades... and yet... these tiny things..." She shook her head, and the dragonlings immediately interpreted it as a cue to swarm her again. She staggered, wings flapping frantically, but could not help the low, amused rumble escaping her throat. "They’re... exhausting... but... clever."
Fluffy chirped, darting in to join the chaos, bouncing around the dragonlings’ tails. Serelyth blinked at him, then at Lira. "I... underestimated the chaos factor of youth," she admitted, wings drooping slightly in mock defeat.
By the time the sun dipped behind the floating rocks, painting the air in amber and rose, Serelyth was sprawled comfortably on a wide platform, dragonlings curled around her, some on Lira’s lap, others perched along the crystal edges, resting after their mischief.
"They’re... exhausting, but remarkable," Serelyth said, exhaling slowly. "Tomorrow, we try patience. And focus. And... maybe I’ll survive it."
Lira smiled, stroking the tiny creatures as they snuggled against them. "You were amazing today," she said softly. "Even if they tested you."
Serelyth’s eyes glimmered faintly, amusement and affection mingling. "And you," she murmured, "are enjoying every moment of it."
The dragonlings chirped again, a chaotic chorus that seemed to echo Serelyth’s own laugh, ringing across the floating islands. And for a brief, golden moment, the dangers of portals, shadows, and strange worlds melted away.
...
The morning air was thick with mist, clouds curling around the floating islands like soft, restless waves. Lira clutched Serelyth’s scaled back, gripping the leather straps of the saddle she had fashioned, and let herself be carried by the powerful white dragon.
"Keep your balance," Serelyth rumbled, wings slicing through the fog with steady beats. "The currents here are tricky. Strong winds can push you off course, and gravity... well, it’s... different."
Lira laughed softly, leaning into Serelyth’s warmth. "I think I’m getting used to it. Mostly."
Beneath them, the crystal shards of the smaller floating islands glimmered faintly in the scattered sunlight, refracting the light into muted rainbows that danced across the fog. Tiny dragonlings zipped ahead, their scales catching each beam of sun, leaving streaks of glimmer in their wake.
"They’re leading us," Lira observed, pointing to the little dragons darting through the clouds. "They know where they’re going."
Serelyth’s wings beat stronger, navigating the foggy currents as they followed the small, eager guides. Lira marveled at how fluidly the dragonlings moved—turning, looping, even diving briefly into the mist only to reappear moments later, perfectly coordinated.
Hours passed in a graceful silence, broken only by the flapping of wings and the occasional chirp or squeal from the young dragons. Lira leaned forward, peering through the shifting fog, when a vague silhouette began to form ahead.
"Something... big," she whispered, eyes widening.
As they drew closer, the mist parted like curtains. The floating island that emerged was enormous, far larger than any they had seen so far. Towering crystalline spires jutted from the rock, not jagged like the previous lands but smooth, carved, and polished. Structures—homes, marketplaces, bridges—glimmered faintly, constructed from stone and crystal, built to float among the clouds.
The dragonlings squealed with excitement, darting toward the town, looping around towers and bridges, as if urging Lira and Serelyth onward.
Serelyth banked sharply, spiraling down to approach a landing area near a broad, open square. The dragonlings scattered, weaving between massive, pearly dragons already moving about the streets. Lira’s heart leapt—this was a dragon town, alive and bustling, yet unlike any human city she had ever seen.
"They... really live here," Lira breathed. Her eyes scanned the architecture: crystalline spires forming elegant arches, terraces of floating gardens suspended by faint magical currents, and pathways that seemed to defy gravity entirely.
Serelyth landed with a soft thud, wings folding elegantly against her body. "This is... one of the hidden sky settlements. Few humans have seen it. Few even know it exists."
A group of elder dragons approached, their scales ranging from deep sapphire to pearly white. They regarded Serelyth with recognition and respect, though their gaze softened on Lira, curious and cautious.
Lira slid from Serelyth’s back, Fluffy leaping down after her, his fur bristling with excitement. The dragonlings swarmed around them, chirping happily, diving through the columns and arches. Lira laughed, crouching to stroke a small, golden-scaled dragonling that had landed on her shoulder.
One of the elder dragons, a tall, silver-scaled female, stepped forward. "Serelyth," she rumbled, voice rich and deep. "You bring a guest again."
Lira bowed politely. "I’m... Lira. It’s an honor to meet you."
The silver dragon tilted her head, examining her. "You are... human, but your presence carries resonance. The younglings approve. That is rare."
Serelyth’s head dipped in quiet pride. "She has learned to fly, to travel between worlds. She listens, watches, adapts."
Lira’s gaze swept across the town. Market stalls hung with glimmering fruits, crystalline grains, and floating herbs. Bridges of polished stone curved across open air, connecting islands like arcs of liquid silver. Tiny dragonlings scurried above and below, playing and practicing flight, while larger dragons maintained the town’s flow and order.
"They’ve built everything in the air," Lira murmured, awe-struck. "Homes, streets... gardens... even shops. And they move between them freely."
The elder silver dragon nodded. "Life here is balance. Gravity, wind, currents, and each other. It requires trust, skill, and... patience with the young ones."
Lira glanced at Serelyth, who chuckled, glancing down at the dragonlings who were now attempting to loop through an archway. "Patience... I’ve learned that already," Serelyth said dryly, watching one dragonling get tangled briefly in a floating banner before righting itself triumphantly.
Lira smiled. "Then maybe we can help. Explore. Learn. Maybe... even trade knowledge about plants and fruits."
The elder dragon’s eyes glimmered. "Perhaps. But first... you must understand the ways of our town. The currents, the boundaries, the flow of life in the air. Not all is safe for those unpracticed."
Lira nodded eagerly. "We’ll follow."
