Born as a Witch
Chapter 463: Renkai’s panic
Lira smiled softly, brushing a hand across his cheek. "I’m fine," she said again. Her voice was calm, grounding. "Nothing... nothing that matters. I had Serelyth. She kept me safe. The shard burned a little, but it’s fine. Truly."
Renkai’s shoulders sagged as a single sob escaped him. He buried his face against her neck, holding her as if letting go might shatter them both. "I just... I just hate that I wasn’t there with you. I felt so helpless."
Lira’s arms tightened around him. "You were always with me, even when you weren’t by my side. Your love... your presence... it followed me. Always. Don’t feel guilty."
He lifted his head slightly, wiping the tears streaking down his face, and looked into her eyes—red-rimmed, yet filled with relief and love. "I just... I never want to let you go again."
"Nor I," Lira whispered, pressing her forehead to his. "We’re together now. That’s all that matters."
Fluffy padded between them, circling their feet and mewing softly, almost as if offering his own reassurance. Renkai let out a shaky laugh and held Lira again, this time calmer, savoring the warmth and presence that had been missing for so long.
"I love you," he whispered, voice low but steady.
"I love you too," Lira replied, resting her cheek against his chest. "Now let’s sit. Let’s breathe. I’ll tell you everything about the shard, the star, and everything I saw."
He nodded, still holding her close, finally letting the relief settle in. For the first time in what felt like forever, Renkai allowed himself to believe they were truly home—together, safe, and whole.
Lira carefully carried the Dragonkin sapling she had acquired from the floating sky-world. Its roots shimmered faintly, faint golden veins pulsing like tiny rivers of light. Fluffy padded alongside her, tail flicking in curiosity, while Renkai walked just behind, still brushing grass from his sleeves, eyes alert yet softened with awe.
At the base of the Great Tree, Lira knelt, gently setting the sapling into the prepared soil. She brushed away the loose earth around it and let her hands hover just above the roots. "This one is special," she murmured, "it’s not just any plant—it carries the essence of its sky-world."
The Great Tree hummed softly, responding to her words. Lira closed her eyes, feeling the subtle resonance between the sapling and the Grove. "See this?" she said, pointing to the pulsing golden veins. "It’s alive in a way I’ve never seen before. We need to help it... and it’ll help the Grove in return."
Serelyth had come down from the upper branches, curious and proud. "You’ve brought it here? From that world?" Her voice carried both awe and approval. She lowered herself until her pearly white snout was near the sapling. "It will grow strong here... if nurtured correctly. Dragons... even young ones... know how to sense this kind of life."
Lira smiled, brushing soil over the roots with deliberate care. "We’ll feed it star-water from the shard, and let it draw from the Grove’s energy. Renkai, can you help me stabilize the flow?"
He nodded immediately, kneeling on the other side of the sapling. Together, they guided gentle currents of energy into the roots, their hands hovering just above, not touching but channeling life through intent. The sapling quivered slightly, golden veins brightening as the Grove’s magic and the Living Star’s essence intertwined.
Fluffy sat beside Lira, tail wrapped around her wrist as though grounding her. "It likes you," she said softly to Renkai.
"Yes," he agreed, watching the sapling’s glow intensify. "And it’ll grow... and flourish... just like everything you bring back from your travels."
The Great Tree’s branches rustled approvingly overhead. Lira looked up, a soft laugh escaping her lips. "It’s going to be part of the Grove now," she whispered. "And someday, it will bear fruit, seeds, maybe even wings for someone else to discover."
Serelyth nudged Lira gently with her snout. "You’ve done well, Lira. This sapling... it will carry a piece of our travels here forever."
Renkai pulled her close, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. "And we’ll be here for it," he said softly, "watching it grow, like we watch over you."
Lira rested her hand over the glowing sapling, feeling its pulse. The Grove had grown richer, more alive, and more connected to the worlds they had seen.
Lira stepped back from the glowing Dragonkin sapling, brushing her hands lightly on her robe. The Grove felt alive around her, more vibrant than ever, yet... something felt off. The wind through the branches shifted unnaturally, carrying a subtle hum that set her teeth on edge.
The Great Tree’s deep voice resonated through the roots and leaves. "Lira," it said, low and firm, "I feel a shift in the air. You must listen carefully."
Lira’s eyes widened. "What is it, old friend?"
"Your travels have brought energies from other worlds into the Grove," the Tree continued. Its leaves trembled with urgency. "Crystalline threads, star shards, Dragonkin essence... all are powerful, yes, but mixing worlds carries consequences."
Lira frowned, glancing at the Dragonkin sapling, its golden veins pulsing in rhythm with the Grove’s magic. "But... if we integrate them carefully, it could strengthen the Grove, couldn’t it?"
The Tree exhaled through its branches, a sigh like distant thunder. "Strength, yes... but also risk. Shadows have sensed your presence. They drift closer to the Grove’s border, testing, probing. Only the portal’s lingering protection keeps them from entering fully. This sanctuary remains safe because I guard its heart... but your excursions have opened threads that can be followed."
Renkai, standing nearby, stiffened. "Shadows? Near the Grove?" His voice held tension, his eyes scanning the outer edges of the trees as if expecting dark figures to emerge from the roots.
"Yes," the Tree confirmed. "You have done well, but be mindful. Do not bring the currents of other worlds recklessly. The Grove protects you now, but it is not impervious. Your power draws attention."
Lira knelt, pressing a hand to the base of the Great Tree. "I understand," she whispered. "I... I will be careful. We’ll integrate these energies slowly, cautiously. Nothing that risks the Grove."
The Tree’s branches lowered slightly, brushing the glowing sapling. "Good. Let the Dragonkin sapling root fully here first. Let the crystalline fruits and star shards be contained until the energies can harmonize. You are wise to heed this."
Fluffy padded closer, tail twitching. He mewed softly toward the western edge, where faint shadows seemed to ripple along the roots. Lira’s heart tightened. The threat was real, even if unseen.
Renkai placed a steady hand on her shoulder. "Then we’ll keep watch. You don’t have to do this alone."
Lira smiled, taking a deep breath. "No. We’ll protect the Grove... and still learn from the worlds we’ve seen. Carefully, step by step."
The Great Tree’s voice softened, almost proud. "You are learning well, Lira. Balance is the key. The Grove is safe... for now. But remember—those who track you will not wait forever. The shadows will test the borders again."
The wind shifted once more, carrying a faint scent of distant minerals, crystalline light, and starlight. A subtle reminder that other worlds still beckoned. Lira felt both awe and responsibility weigh heavily in her chest.
"We’ll do it together," she said firmly to Renkai, Fluffy, and the Grove itself. "Carefully. Thoughtfully. Nothing reckless."
The leaves rustled in agreement, and a calm settled over the Grove, though faint echoes of danger lingered at its borders, a whisper of shadows that would not be ignored.
Lira knelt by the glowing Dragonkin sapling, brushing soil over its roots, when Renkai stepped close, his expression tense. His hand rested lightly on her shoulder, but there was steel beneath his touch.
"You’re not going through that portal again," he said quietly, voice low but firm. "I won’t let you. Not like last time. I lost you once... I won’t let it happen again."
Lira froze, her hands hovering over the sapling. She met his gaze. "Renkai..." she began, but her words faltered.
"I mean it," he continued, his eyes dark with fear and frustration. "The portal calls you. I know. I’ve seen it. But this time, you stay. Here. With us. With the Grove. You are not alone, Lira. You never will be."
Serelyth shifted beside her, her pearly white scales gleaming even in the dappled light of the Grove. "He’s right," she said, her voice firm but calm. "I’ve flown the skies, crossed worlds, and I’ve learned one thing: power alone isn’t enough. You need allies. We have your back."
Thalanir stepped forward, aura steady, eyes locked on Lira. "Shadows approach. But we are here. All of us. You do not face this alone."
Lira’s chest tightened, a mix of relief, guilt, and love pressing down on her. "I... I just want to protect the Grove. To make sure nothing threatens it. Nothing threatens you, any of you."
Renkai cupped her face gently, his thumb brushing across her cheek. "And we’ll fight it together. You don’t have to go through a portal to do that. We are stronger than them... together."
Serelyth flexed her wings slightly, shifting her weight, ready to spring into action. "Let them come. They will learn quickly that this Grove has more than one protector."
Thalanir’s voice was steady, calm, yet carried an edge of authority. "The Grove itself watches, but we must be its shield. You stay with the heart of it. That is your strength now."
Lira exhaled slowly, letting the tension slip from her shoulders. She looked at the three who had stood unwaveringly by her side—Renkai, Thalanir, Serelyth—and felt a wave of gratitude and warmth.
"I... I understand," she whispered. "I’ll stay. I’ll protect the Grove with all I have."
Renkai pulled her into a firm embrace, holding her as if he’d never let go. "Good. We’ll face whatever comes. Together. You, me, them—and the Grove."
Serelyth nudged Lira gently with her scaled shoulder, a playful but reassuring reminder of strength. "Now, let’s see how far these shadows dare approach."
Thalanir stepped close, bowing slightly, his hand resting on the hilt of a blade that shimmered faintly with Grove magic. "We are ready. All of us. Let them come."
Lira’s gaze shifted to the Dragonkin sapling, the crystalline fruits, and the faint shimmer of starlight still lingering from her recent travels. "Then let’s make sure the Grove thrives... and that nothing threatens it ever again."
The wind shifted, carrying the faint hum of magic. The shadows at the borders stirred, but now they would meet more than one guardian. They would meet a united front, a family bound by trust, love, and determination.
And Lira... finally felt she was truly home.
