Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 119: An Uninvited Guest
"Of course, Grandma." Wren Wynter smiled faintly. "By the way, Grandma, have you felt unwell at all since you got home today?"
Old Madam Xavier shook her head. "I’m feeling wonderful. You don’t need to worry."
"That’s good. Grandma, let’s go back to your room. I’ll give you a basic check-up."
"Alright."
Wren helped Old Madam Xavier up.
Kaden Xavier watched the scene, feeling a strange sense of warmth.
Only when Wren was around did he feel like his heart wasn’t empty.
Wren checked the old woman’s blood pressure and listened to her heartbeat. Seeing no major issues, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Grandma, you must not get angry. Staying in good spirits is crucial for your health."
"As long as you two are happy, how could Grandma ever be in a bad mood?"
Wren fell silent.
’Grandma had that fit of anger because she heard about the divorce with Kaden Xavier.’
’If she found out our cooling-off period is about to end, would she...?’
While she was lost in thought, Old Madam Xavier took Wren’s hand, her cloudy yet kind eyes gazing gently at her.
"Wren, Grandma knows. It’s my fault for dragging you and Kaden down. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have to endure this grievance."
Wren knew what Old Madam Xavier was talking about. She squeezed the old woman’s hand back and said, "Grandma, please don’t overthink things. You haven’t dragged us down at all. Kaden Xavier and I have already talked things through, and we’ve made up."
"Really?" Old Madam Xavier was clearly skeptical. "I’m old now. I won’t get to hold a great-grandchild. I just hope you and Kaden can live a good life together. If there were any misunderstandings in the past, you must clear them up. Don’t let someone else ruin your relationship."
"Mm-hmm." Wren replied obediently, her eyelids drooping, her expression unreadable.
"Grandma." Just then, Kaden Xavier walked in from behind Wren and sat down beside Old Madam Xavier. "It’s almost time for dinner."
’When did he get to the door?’
’Did he hear what I just said?’
"Yes. Wren, I had the kitchen prepare your favorite seafood. It’s definitely no worse than what you’d get at a five-star hotel."
"Thank you, Grandma." When Wren looked up, her eyes were smiling.
She helped Old Madam Xavier out of bed, walked her to the doorway, and handed her over to the butler, who then escorted her to the dining table.
Kaden Xavier stayed close behind Wren the whole time.
He had heard everything she just said.
She said they had made up.
"Wren..."
"Don’t get the wrong idea. I just don’t want Grandma to be sad. The divorce is still happening, but I’ll play along in front of her."
Wren explained before he could finish.
Kaden Xavier’s heart sank. His ink-black eyes, usually as cold as ice shards, now held a trace of pain.
"Kaden Xavier, if you really want to make it up to me, let’s just stay friends for now."
This was the only way she could figure out how to interact with him at the moment.
"Alright." Kaden Xavier didn’t refuse.
He was afraid that refusing would only push Wren further away.
’At least as friends, it’s better than her ignoring me completely.’
"Old Madam, Miss Sutton is here."
They had just come downstairs when the butler walked in, bowing respectfully to Old Madam Xavier.
Old Madam Xavier frowned, her face showing clear displeasure.
"Why is she so persistent? Tell her to leave."
Old Madam Xavier waved her hand impatiently, telling the butler to send her away.
’I finally get to have a nice meal with my good granddaughter-in-law, and some tactless person just has to come and interrupt.’
"Yes." The butler withdrew.
He hadn’t actually finished what he was going to say. Seraphina Sutton had said that if they didn’t let her in, she would just stand outside until the Old Madam agreed to see her.
But he had been with the Old Madam for decades; he understood her intentions with a single look.
"Grandma, let Seraphina Sutton in. She just had a miscarriage, and her body hasn’t recovered yet. What if something happens..." Kaden Xavier spoke up.
"Then she should be at Azure Dragon Bay resting properly. What is she doing running over here?" Old Madam Xavier’s sharp gaze swept over Kaden Xavier.
Kaden Xavier frowned but ultimately said nothing more to upset his grandmother.
"If she wants to stand out there, let her. I certainly didn’t invite her."
"Grandma." Wren, who had been silent, finally spoke. "We should let her in. If people with ulterior motives see us treating her this way, it could be exploited."
She didn’t care one bit whether Seraphina Sutton lived or died. But the Xavier Group’s stock had been volatile lately, with many people eyeing it covetously, just waiting for leverage to use against them. Wasn’t this handing them a perfect opportunity on a silver platter?
"Grandma, I’m fine. If she wants to come, let her. It’s not right to turn away a guest."
"She’s an uninvited guest!" Old Madam Xavier huffed.
She already disliked Seraphina Sutton, but the woman was like a leech, always showing up in front of her, impossible to shake off.
"Alright, Grandma, don’t be angry. We agreed you need to rest quietly. Let her in."
The butler, who had just returned, glanced at Old Madam Xavier on the sofa.
Old Madam Xavier patted the back of Wren’s hand and shot the butler an affirmative glance.
A moment later, the butler led Seraphina Sutton into the villa.
When she saw Wren sitting next to Old Madam Xavier, a flicker of malice flashed across her face, which Wren cleverly caught.
Wren gave an inward sneer and remained silent, sitting beside Old Madam Xavier.
"Grandma." Seraphina Sutton eagerly handed some nutritional supplements to the butler beside her and gave Old Madam Xavier a sweet smile.
"What are you doing here?"
"I heard you were discharged from the hospital today, so I wanted to come and see you."
"Well, you’ve seen me now. Nothing’s wrong, so you can go home."
Old Madam Xavier’s merciless words almost left Seraphina Sutton completely embarrassed. The smile on her face cracked slightly. "Grandma, have you eaten yet? Why don’t I show you what I can do? I’ve learned a lot of new dishes recently."
"That won’t be necessary. We have maids to do the cooking. No need for you to trouble yourself."
"Grandma..." ’This is so unfair!’ Seraphina Sutton thought, feeling utterly wronged.
’What did I do wrong this time?’
’Why does she treat me like this?’
’Damn old hag. If it weren’t for marrying Kaden Xavier, I couldn’t be bothered to suck up to her.’
"Stop! Your tears are too precious. Don’t shed them in front of me; I can’t afford to pay for them."
Old Madam Xavier turned her head away, ignoring Seraphina Sutton’s trembling figure.
Kaden Xavier pinched the bridge of his nose, a headache coming on. He spoke helplessly, "Dinner is about to be served. After we eat, I’ll have the driver take you home." 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
"Okay." Seraphina Sutton bit her lower lip, lowered her head, and sat down silently across from Old Madam Xavier.
When it was finally time to eat, Seraphina Sutton tried to sit closer to Old Madam Xavier, but the old woman dodged her and even moved to the seat farthest away from her.
Seeing Old Madam Xavier’s childish behavior, Wren smiled faintly, a warm feeling spreading through her heart.
’Only Grandma looks out for me like this.’
"Where’s Lana? Why hasn’t she come down for dinner?"
"Mom, Lana went out for a meal with friends. She said not to wait for her," Helen Sawyer said as she sat down.
Recalling how cheerful she was today, she found it a bit strange.
