Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Can You Understand?

When Wren Wynter came out, Kaden Xavier was calmly eating breakfast at the dining table, as if nothing had happened.

Just like whenever they argued over Seraphina Sutton, she was always the one who lost control and became hysterical.

And he would always remain emotionally stable, watching her one-sided tirade.

Once she was done, they would just paper over the cracks.

After Asher Lynch passed away, this had become their dynamic.

In truth, it also doomed their marriage to fail.

Wren Wynter suppressed her emotions and calmly sat down across from Kaden Xavier.

"Wren, thank you for bringing me back last night."

Wren took a bite of sweet potato and said coldly, without looking up, "Kaden Xavier, Grandma... so, our act is over. Once we’ve taken care of the funeral, we’ll go our separate ways."

"But you said we could be friends." Kaden Xavier faltered, his gaze locked on Wren.

"Kaden Xavier, I once loved you very much. I really can’t pretend nothing happened and just be friends with you." Wren Wynter put down her soy milk and met his gaze without wavering.

In her glistening eyes, there was no longer a trace of her past affection.

"Do you understand?"

Her soft, pleasant voice was now speaking such cruel words, driving the needle in Kaden Xavier’s heart a little deeper. The dull ache almost made him lose control of his expression.

After a long moment, he said, "I understand."

The atmosphere in the living room was incredibly gloomy.

Wren honestly had no appetite. After drinking a full glass of soy milk, she didn’t feel like eating anything else.

If she didn’t have a four-hour surgery later today that required something in her stomach, she wouldn’t have even managed to drink the soy milk.

Seeing her about to leave, Kaden Xavier hurried after her. "I’ll drive you."

"You don’t have to." Wren refused, turning to look at him. "Kaden Xavier, you must find who killed Grandma. Don’t disappoint me."

"Okay," Kaden Xavier replied.

Even without Wren saying anything, he would have hunted down the killer to avenge his grandmother.

「The Hospital.」

Wren rushed into her office, and just as she sat down, Mason Shaw walked in.

"Good morning, Dr. Wynter."

Wren was in no mood to deal with Mason Shaw, so she just gave a noncommittal hum.

Seeing her cold attitude, Mason Shaw didn’t get angry. Instead, he pulled a file from behind his back and placed it in front of her.

"This is Old Madam Xavier’s autopsy report. I knew you’d want it, so I specifically requested a copy from the medical examiner."

Wren was surprised. ’It’s not easy to get your hands on this. Mason Shaw must have connections at the police department.’

’Then again, with his background, it was probably a piece of cake.’

"Thank you."

Wren thanked Mason Shaw so earnestly that he found it a little amusing.

"Dr. Wynter, you know I’ve never been after your gratitude."

He planted his hands on the desk and suddenly leaned in toward Wren.

Wren recoiled uncomfortably but managed to force a polite smile.

"But besides my gratitude, I don’t think I have anything else to offer you, Dr. Shaw."

"I’m just kidding. Go on, read it. I’ll leave you to it." Mason Shaw shrugged and left the office.

’He knew he couldn’t rush things. With such a major upheaval in the Xavier family, Wren, as their former granddaughter-in-law, must be incredibly busy. She won’t have the headspace to think about anything else.’

’But he had patience in spades.’

’If the prey were that easy to catch, it wouldn’t be any fun.’

Wren hurriedly opened the file folder.

It stated that Old Madam Xavier had been stabbed in the chest with a sharp object, and the wound showed signs of abrasion.

This meant the assailant had repeatedly stabbed the same area.

It was impossible to know which stab had been the fatal one.

But there had definitely been many stabs.

’The killer must have had a profound hatred for the victim to be this vicious.’

Wren clenched her fists as immense anger washed over her.

’Monster!’

’An absolute monster!’

’Why would someone do this to an eighty-year-old woman?’

’Grandma was frail; she couldn’t have fought back. It must have been a surprise attack.’

’The autopsy report said there were no signs of a struggle.’

’That means the killer was probably someone Grandma knew. That’s why she was caught completely off guard.’

Wren had never hated someone so intensely before.

She wanted to tear the killer limb from limb.

Wiping away her tears, Wren took the autopsy report, requested time off from the hospital director, and headed for the Xavier Group.

She had to give this report to Kaden Xavier to help him find the killer.

「Xavier Group.」

Kaden Xavier was at the office handling company affairs, not at the airline.

With his grandmother’s passing, his relatives were circling like vultures, eyeing his position.

After all, his grandmother had died too suddenly and without a will. Everyone coveted the company shares she held.

Having been announced beforehand, Wren had no trouble getting to Kaden Xavier’s penthouse office.

"This is Grandma’s autopsy report. Take a look." Wren handed the file to Kaden Xavier.

"Okay." Kaden Xavier took it.

"Do you have any suspects?" Wren asked.

"Yes. The police are running a parallel investigation," Kaden Xavier replied.

"That’s good. I’m going to use the restroom."

"Okay. Have you eaten? Later, we could..."

"No. Your priority right now is to work with the police and find the killer, so Grandma can rest in peace."

After saying her piece, Wren went to the restroom.

A while later...

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.

"Come in."

Assistant Lynch walked in, looking troubled. "Mr. Xavier, Miss Sutton is here. She says she wants to see you."

"I’m not seeing her," Kaden Xavier refused flatly.

But before Assistant Lynch could leave, a sharp, piercing voice came from outside.

"Do you have any idea who I am? How dare you stop me! Let me in!"

"Miss, without Mr. Xavier’s permission, we really can’t let you in."

The secretary outside was in a very difficult position.

It wasn’t that she didn’t know who Seraphina Sutton was, but with the company in turmoil recently, a junior secretary like her didn’t dare let anyone in without permission.

Kaden Xavier’s brow furrowed, and his expression darkened. "Call security and have her thrown out."

"Yes, sir."

’It looks like Miss Sutton has fallen out of favor,’ Assistant Lynch thought. ’In the past, far from being thrown out, Mr. Xavier would personally go down to greet her whenever she came to the company.’

"Kaden!" Seraphina Sutton broke free from the secretary’s grasp and burst in.

Assistant Lynch was startled. ’I can’t believe Seraphina Sutton is this brazen.’

"Why won’t you see me? You haven’t been to Azure Dragon Bay in a long time."

Seraphina Sutton stood a few steps from the desk, her gaze fixed on Kaden Xavier’s sharp, stern profile. An obsessive look uncontrollably surfaced in her slightly bloodshot eyes.

She stared at him, dazed, but no matter how intensely she looked, Kaden Xavier acted as if he didn’t feel a thing. He didn’t even so much as lift an eyelid.

The obsession in Seraphina Sutton’s eyes faded, and the brief moment of clarity that followed was quickly replaced by resentment.

"Kaden, what are you looking at?"

Seraphina was furious. ’Since when am I less important to Kaden Xavier than a piece of paper?’

She suddenly strode forward and was in front of Kaden Xavier in an instant.

She moved so quickly and suddenly that neither the assistant nor the secretary had a chance to stop her.

"Mr. Xavier..." the assistant cried out in alarm.

Kaden Xavier looked up, his dark eyes fixed on Seraphina Sutton with displeasure. "Did you not understand me? I told you to leave."

His voice was curt and sharp, radiating an oppressive aura.

Seraphina Sutton’s heart skipped a beat, but before she could get her words out, she caught a glimpse of the document in Kaden Xavier’s hands.

Her heart leaped uncontrollably. The romantic fantasy in her head evaporated, replaced by alarm and unease.

"Kaden, how do you have that?"

Seraphina Sutton smiled, trying her best to look natural, but her voice trembled slightly.

It was hard to notice if you weren’t listening carefully.

Especially since Kaden Xavier was in a foul mood and wasn’t inclined to pay close attention.

His dark, cold eyes swept over to the assistant and secretary.

He didn’t have to say a word of reprimand. The assistant immediately understood and apologized, "I’m sorry, Mr. Xavier. It was my negligence that allowed Miss Sutton to barge in. I’ll escort her out immediately."

With a grim expression, he reached out to pull Seraphina Sutton away.

A glint flashed in Seraphina Sutton’s eyes. She spun around, suddenly lost her footing, and stumbled into Kaden Xavier’s arms.

Just as Kaden Xavier was about to push Seraphina away, Wren’s voice came from the doorway.

"Kaden Xavier, once you’ve read it, remember to—"
