Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 130: He Didn’t Want to Make Things Difficult for Wren Wynter
"She also said that you’re a good man in every respect, except that you’re too sentimental—unable to be ruthless when the situation calls for it. She transferred these shares to you so you would have nothing holding you back, and so you would see that responsibility is not the same as obligation."
Maximus Yates looked at Kaden Xavier with the concern of an elder.
Old Madam Xavier had mentioned him as well.
She had also said that if Kaden Xavier ran into trouble in the future, he should, for her sake, help him out.
Kaden Xavier clenched the documents in his hand, his knuckles turning white as the veins bulged on the back of his hand.
He knew what his grandmother meant.
She believed he was being good to Seraphina Sutton for Asher Lynch’s sake.
Asher Lynch had passed away, so he shouldered everything, including caring for his widow.
His grandmother had thought of everything for his sake, even arranging her affairs after death for his benefit.
’But I failed to protect Grandma...’
"I was useless..." Kaden Xavier’s cold demeanor crumbled.
Usually calm and self-possessed, he could not suppress the grief and self-reproach in his heart at this moment.
Wren Wynter had never seen him like this.
Before, he had always been high and mighty, as if he had everything planned out and under control.
Unable to bear it, Wren Wynter gently pressed the back of his hand.
The touch was light, but it sent a jolt through Kaden Xavier.
"There’s also this." Maximus Yates pointed to the letter. "She gave specific instructions that this letter was only to be opened and read by Wren."
Wren Wynter froze for a moment, then looked at Kaden Xavier.
Kaden Xavier nodded. "Since it was Grandma’s wish, go ahead and read it."
Wren Wynter carefully picked up the letter.
The envelope was an elegant, light purple, with "To Wren Wynter, Personal" written on it in delicate brush script.
She opened the envelope, took out the letter, and unfolded it.
A familiar script met her eyes.
My dearest Wren,
By the time you read this letter, Grandma may already be gone. Don’t be sad. To be honest, I knew long ago that after this ordeal, I wouldn’t have many days left. I know my own body.
There are some things Grandma has always wanted to say to you, but I never found the right opportunity. I’m writing them here now, and I hope it’s not too late.
First, Grandma wants to apologize to you. For the past three years, you have been wronged in the Xavier Family. Kaden isn’t a bad kid; he just doesn’t know how to cherish what he has and ended up hurting you.
Grandma saw it all and was anxious, but I didn’t know how to help you two. Every time I saw you suffering in silence, my heart ached.
You are a good child—kind, strong, and talented. Grandma knows you didn’t marry into the Xavier Family for its money or power, but because you genuinely loved Kaden. It’s a shame that boy is blind and couldn’t see how wonderful you are.
There is a bank card in the envelope; the PIN is your birthday. It’s not much money, just a small token from Grandma. Take it and do what you want to do. Go pursue the life you want.
Don’t refuse it. Even though you and Kaden are divorced, in Grandma’s heart, you will always be my granddaughter-in-law, my granddaughter.
Remember, no matter what happens, you must protect yourself. Grandma will be watching over you from heaven.
May the rest of your life be filled with peace and joy, and may you find someone who truly deserves you.
—Your forever loving grandma
After reading the letter, Wren Wynter’s face was already streaked with tears. A wave of pain washed over her heart, making it hard to breathe.
She clutched the letter tightly, and her tears dripped onto the elegant script, smudging the ink.
Watching her trembling shoulders, Kaden Xavier felt a sharp pain in his chest.
He wanted to reach out and comfort her, but he didn’t dare to be presumptuous.
Maximus Yates and Isaac Yates exchanged a look and sighed silently.
Wren Wynter bit her lip, trying not to sob aloud, but tears streamed down her face like pearls from a broken string.
’What have I ever done to deserve such heartfelt devotion from Grandma?’
’So, Grandma knew all along that Kaden and I were divorced. She just never exposed it.’
Regret, guilt, self-blame... A torrent of emotions swirled together, making it almost impossible for Wren Wynter to breathe.
After a long while, she finally calmed herself and tipped a bank card and a brass key out of the envelope.
’The key is identical to the one in the wooden box. They must be a pair.’
"Grandma..." Wren Wynter looked at the bank card and key in her hand, her vision blurring with tears again. "Why were you so good to me? I don’t deserve it..."
"Silly child, don’t say such things," Maximus Yates said gently. "She was a very good judge of character. If she said you were good, then you are truly good. This world is full of social climbers; pure and kind young women like you are a rare find these days."
Wren Wynter lowered her head and wiped her tears, her heart a whirlwind of complicated feelings.
Maximus Yates waved his hand, his expression turning serious. "Kaden, I am also deeply saddened by what happened to her. Although the Yates Family is not in the same industry as your Xavier Family, we still have some connections in The Capital. If you need help, don’t hesitate to ask."
"Thank you for your kind offer, Elder Yates." Kaden Xavier shook his head. "I want to investigate this matter myself. I must avenge my grandmother with my own hands."
Maximus Yates looked at him, a flash of appreciation in his eyes.
"Good. You have ambition, just like your grandfather in his youth. I believe you can find the truth, but if you run into any difficulties, you can come to me at any time."
"Thank you, Elder Yates."
Isaac Yates helped Elder Yates up, and they all walked out of the study together.
Just then, the sound of a door opening came from the entryway. Shaun Quinn walked in from outside, coming face-to-face with Wren Wynter and the others.
"Second Senior Brother."
Shaun Quinn was taken aback, his eyes meeting Wren Wynter’s. "Why are you here?"
"I came to pick something up from Elder Yates."
"Shaun, you’re back. You..."
"Come with me." Shaun Quinn grabbed Wren Wynter’s wrist and started to pull her away.
Kaden Xavier frowned and quickly grabbed Wren Wynter’s other hand. At the same time, Isaac Yates’s angry voice came from behind them.
"Stop!"
Shaun Quinn stopped and turned his head to look coldly at Isaac Yates. "What is it?"
"Is that any way to talk to your elders?"
"What more do you want? I’m already doing you a huge favor by even setting foot in this house again."
"You!"
"Could you two please let go of me first?" Wren Wynter said, looking from Kaden Xavier to Shaun Quinn.
"No!"
"No!"
Kaden Xavier and Shaun Quinn spoke in unison, a rare moment of perfect agreement.
Wren Wynter sighed lightly. "You’re hurting me. Let go!"
Her last two words were tinged with anger, and though they were unwilling, they both let go.
"Kaden Xavier, you should go home."
"Why?" A trace of displeasure crept into Kaden Xavier’s eyes.
Wren Wynter rubbed her sore wrist and said coolly, "This has nothing to do with you. You should go."
Kaden Xavier stared intently at Wren Wynter, his lips pressed into a sharp, thin line, his eyes dimming with disappointment.
After a long moment, he spoke.
"Fine."
He didn’t want to make things difficult for her.
