"I never said I’d cover for you. You’re thanking the wrong person." Wren was annoyed and didn’t mince her words. If she was miserable, no one else was going to be happy.

Sure enough, Seraphina Sutton’s face paled, stung by the public rebuke. "Dr. Wynter, do you hate me that much?"

"I wouldn’t go that far." Wren really didn’t want to waste her days dealing with this pair. "Is there anything else?"

Kaden Xavier dodged the question. "How’s your foot?"

"Don’t trouble yourself. Captain Xavier, you should focus on Miss Sutton." She hated how Kaden doted on Seraphina Sutton while still pretending to care about her.

Hearing Wren’s reply, Kaden’s face instantly darkened, his expression turning to ice. "Wren, don’t be ungrateful. Last night..."

"Kaden," Seraphina Sutton cut in, her voice soft and weak. "I’m feeling a little dizzy... Besides, don’t you have an evaluation this afternoon? I’m still not very familiar with the emergency procedures. Could you go over them with me again?"

Kaden’s dark eyes flickered over to Wren. Before they married, she never spoke to him with such cold words. She used to love smiling at him.

Now, it seemed her words were always barbed, and she hardly ever smiled anymore.

Wren fought back the stinging in her nose as she wrote her medical notes, deliberately ignoring his oppressive stare.

"Fine."

In the end, Kaden left with Seraphina Sutton.

Wren slumped into her chair like a deflated balloon, the rims of her eyes turning red. She really couldn’t stand facing the two of them every day. It was suffocating and utterly vexing.

Should she quit? She wondered if her old professor would even take her back.

At noon, just as Wren was about to head to lunch, she saw the director walk in with someone.

"Dr. Wynter, this is our new flight doctor, Joy Lynch. She’ll be working under you from now on."

Wren looked up in shock. Seeing Joy Lynch give her a little wink, she couldn’t stop the corners of her mouth from turning up. "Understood, Director."

She truly hadn’t expected Joy Lynch to start working at the airline, especially not now, when she was thinking of quitting.

And Joy hadn’t said a word about it last night.

The director nodded, gave a few more instructions, and then left to attend to other matters.

As soon as the door closed, Joy Lynch rushed over and threw her arms around Wren. "Surprise! I specifically requested to be assigned to you!"

"You’re too good at keeping secrets," Wren laughed.

It was easy to see how happy she was.

"I wanted to surprise you!" Joy Lynch looked her over. "Not bad, your color looks a lot better than before. I was worried that scumbag Kaden would have you all worked up."

"He’s not worth it." Wren picked up her meal card. "Come on, I’ll take you to lunch."

"Great, I’m starving." Joy Lynch affectionately linked her arm through Wren’s, just like back in their college days.

In the staff cafeteria, the two had just gotten their food and sat down when they saw Kaden Xavier and Seraphina Sutton walk in together.

Seraphina Sutton was in her flight attendant uniform today. It showed no signs of her pregnancy, instead accentuating her curvaceous figure.

It had to be said, while Seraphina Sutton had an innocent-looking face, her body was smoking hot.

She walked beside Kaden, tray in hand and a sweet smile on her face, drawing side-long glances and whispers from many in the cafeteria.

"Tch, how shameless," Joy Lynch muttered, rolling her eyes.

Wren continued to eat, her expression unchanged, as if she hadn’t seen them. But Seraphina Sutton walked over with her tray and sat down in the empty seat across from her.

"Dr. Wynter, what a coincidence. Is this the new flight doctor? Hello, I’m Seraphina Sutton." Seraphina extended a hand toward Joy Lynch.

Joy Lynch just snorted and pretended she didn’t see the outstretched hand. She had no patience for a homewrecker who interfered in a marriage. She had gone through all the trouble of getting a job here to help Wren get some justice.

Seraphina’s hand was left hanging awkwardly in mid-air.

Kaden Xavier frowned and called out in a cold voice, "Wren."

"Is there a problem, Captain Xavier?" Wren slowly lifted her gaze.

A flicker of mockery rose in her heart. So he can show emotions beyond cold indifference, but only when it involves Seraphina.

So it wasn’t that he was incapable of feeling. It’s just that she wasn’t the one he cared about.

Wren’s lukewarm attitude left Kaden with an indescribable feeling of frustration.

Suddenly, Seraphina gasped and looked at Kaden with an innocent expression. "Kaden, I’m allergic to seafood. I didn’t notice there was shrimp in my meal. It’s my fault, I should have told the staff."

As she spoke, she picked the shrimp off her plate and casually placed it onto Kaden’s, smiling. "I’ll have to trouble you to eat it for me, Kaden. We can’t let it go to waste."

SLAM!

Joy Lynch shot to her feet, glaring furiously at Seraphina. "Seraphina Sutton, what do you think you’re doing? Don’t you know that Wren and Kaden are—"

"Joy Lynch!" Kaden’s eyes narrowed dangerously in a clear warning. "Company policy forbids employees from discussing the personal relationships of captains and crew members. You’re new, so I’ll let it slide this time. Go read the employee handbook, and stop meddling in things that don’t concern you."

Joy was so furious that she wanted to throttle him. "Kaden Xavier, what is wrong with you? Wren is the one who’s—"

"Joy." Wren gently took her wrist and stood up, her expression as calm as if she were stating a simple fact. "Captain Xavier is right. We really shouldn’t meddle in the affairs of unimportant people. Let’s go. We’ll eat somewhere else."

With that, she pulled Joy along and turned to leave, her movements crisp and decisive. She had no desire to eat with that pair anyway.

It was nauseating.

Watching Wren disappear through the cafeteria entrance, Kaden started to follow, but Seraphina grabbed his arm. "Kaden, my stomach feels a little upset..."

Kaden froze. He glanced down at Seraphina, then back at the empty doorway. In the end, he didn’t give chase.

In the hallway, Joy’s eyes were red with anger. "Wren, why didn’t you let me say it? I’m going to tell everyone that you’re Kaden’s wife! That Seraphina Sutton is just a shameless homewrecker!"

Wren just gave a faint, breezy smile. "There’s no point. We’re about to get divorced anyway."

She didn’t even want him anymore, so what was the point of staking her claim?

"But..."

"Joy." Wren stopped and turned to her friend. "I have to go out for a bit this afternoon. Can you cover for me?"

"Where are you going? Do you need any help?"

"No, it’s fine."

She was going to see her lawyer about the divorce. Besides, it would be his grandmother’s birthday in a few days. Even though she and Kaden were about to call it quits, his grandmother had always treated her like her own granddaughter.

She had to pick out a really nice gift for her birthday.

"Alright, don’t worry. I’ve got things covered here. You go ahead."

"Thanks, Joy, you’re a lifesaver!"

At three in the afternoon, Wren left the office. Just then, her phone vibrated. She glanced at the screen.

It was Kaden.

She silenced the call and put the phone back in her bag.

Meanwhile, in the president’s office at the airline, Kaden gripped his phone, his brows furrowing tighter and tighter as the call went unanswered.

His assistant knocked and entered. "Young Master Xavier, here are the documents for the meeting. Also... HR was asking about the intern who was fired this morning. Is there really no chance for an appeal?"

Kaden put down his phone and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Handle it by the book."

"Yes, sir." The assistant hesitated for a moment. "Also... Dr. Wynter from the medical center took the afternoon off. Do you need me to schedule another doctor for your pre-flight physical?"

Kaden’s hand froze.

Wren took leave? Where did she go? Who with?

A string of questions flooded his mind.

In the end, he just waved a hand. "No, that’s fine. You can go."

After the assistant left, Kaden was alone in the office. He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the planes taking off and landing on the tarmac below. For some reason, he felt an inexplicable emptiness in his chest.

The look in Wren’s eyes at the cafeteria today was like a thorn stuck in his heart. That look was too calm, too distant—so calm it frightened him.

He suddenly remembered what she had said last night while struggling in his arms.

"Not for much longer."

Was she serious, or was this just another attempt to get his attention? After all, it wouldn’t be the first time Wren had tried something like this.

His phone vibrated again. It was Seraphina Sutton.

Kaden stared at the name flashing on the screen and, for the first time, didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he dialed the Flight Medicine department.
