Children of a Lesser God
Chapter 654: World Devourer
While Laz felt like he had observed ages, it had been mere moments that he was frozen in place. When he woke up from his vision, he noticed that the pressure in the place was gone as the other members of his group rushed over to him.
"First... you...." Looking at the sword in his hand, even Two felt an unknown amount of fear, as though getting to close to it would cause him to be destroyed.
"It’s alright," Laz said, raising the sword into the air in front of him to take a closer look at it.
"Jormungandr?" Laz read the gold etching on the white blade.
’Why does that name sound familiar? Kat? Any idea?’ Laz asked in his head, but got nothing but silence.
’Kat?’
*KAT?*
Still nothing. While he was worried, since she wasn’t warning him, whatever it was she didn’t want to say he was sure there was a good reason for it.
"So what do we do now?" Seven asked, looking around at the weird things that were still living. While the mayor and the one body had been disposed of, the statue, the spear decoration and the giant penis monster were still there. While they deserved what had happened to them, Blake, the numbers and even Laz had a bad feeling about leaving them alone.
"I don’t know about the giant dick... but the other two... I’m not sure what kinds of powers they received from that creature. Right now they are in shock from their transformations but whats going to happen once they accept and adapt to it? Sure... they might go crazy... but do we want to take that chance?" Two asked, looking at the two weird things still over by the now empty sacrifice pool.
"So kill them?" Sixteen asked.
"Boss?" Blake then turned to Laz.
"Yeah. We don’t need any other surprises. Plus... they knew how to conduct this ritual. If they were to teach it to someone else...." Laz explained his thoughts and saw shivers pass through the group. It was at this point that the other members of the legion returned. They froze in place once they saw the sword and felt the pressure it was giving off. While normal people might not be affected, none of them were saints and had all seen their fair share of blood, but human and monster. So the effect it had on them was massive.
"Oh. Right," Laz said after seeing what happened. He shook the sword lightly and a black scabbard appeared around it. Laz strapped it to his waist, replacing the worn out blade that had been there. Once it was no longer visible, the pressure in the air disappeared.
The others looked at him with shock in their faces.
"What?"
"Boss.. You’re incredible," Blake said, giving him the thumbs up.
"What?" 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
"First. You’ve... tamed the sword?" Two asked.
"Tamed it?" Laz thought about the question.
"No. But... I feel like it’s giving me a chance," Laz said after thinking about all the scenes he experienced as he witnessed the change over of the sword thousands of times throughout history. It had always ended up belonging to a hero of an age and except for the last scene when that great hand grabbed it, it had always fallen into the hands of the one who had killed it’s previous owner. It had been used by so many heroes throughout the eons that this was the first time it had ended up in the hands of such a weakling. Laz got the feeling that the only reason it had agreed to be used by him was because it found it to be a new experience.
When he wrapped it in the scabbard, it was something it wanted itself and expressed that to Laz while also telling him, in no small terms, that he wouldn’t be able to draw it for a long time so don’t think that he would be unbeatable.
’Well... what it actually said was, ’far to weak,’ but I guess considering the heroes I had seen, that makes sense.’
They then walked over in a group to the statue and the brain eyes on the spear.
"This thing creeps me out..." Blake said, seeing the eyes stare at him. It was especially unsettling since they didn’t have eyelids and couldn’t move so no matter where you where standing, it was like those eyes were looking at you.
"Let’s get this done," Two said, drawing his sword. Blake went with him while Seven and Sixteen were lent some war hammers from two of the larger members of the legion who liked to keep them with them even though they weren’t that good for formation fighting. While the two men were large and muscular, Seven and Sixteen were far stronger even with their smaller bodies.
For the moment, no one wanted to approach the penis monster.
Seven and Sixteen went first, slamming the war hammers at the head and torso of the statue, only for the hammers to be thrown backwards along with the men holding them.
Knocking several unfortunate legions members down, the two men didn’t stop until they hit the floor several tens of feet away.
Blake and Two looked at each other with a bit of reluctance but slashed their swords at the brain eye thingy only to be thrown away as well.
"Well.... fuck...." Blake said, standing up while wiping a bit of blood off his mouth. Two was also alright for the most part, but Seven and Sixteen needed to be helped to their feet and even then their hands seemed to have several broken fingers which were quickly treated.
Watching this, Laz was amazed. While his power was leagues above these men, Two and Blake were still Void Lords and their power was nothing to be messed with. Be despite that, a brainstem with eyes proved to be too much for them. It was only now that Laz felt a tug at his waist as the sword, Jormungandr, seemed to want something.
Following it’s lead, Laz brought to blade close to the statue person first and touched the blade to it. With a loud whoosh, all of the energy from the statue was drawn out by the blade and sucked inside of it. The massive amount of energy in the statue even made Laz’s hair stand up as it seemed to remind him of that giant head.
’Seems like only something like this is worthy of this blade,’ Laz thought.
Once it was done, the statue stayed whole for only a few seconds before it started to crack and flake, breaking apart in mere moments.
In only a minute, nothing was left but some dust on the ground.
Laz then turned his attention to the brain thingy and repeating the process, drew the energy of the head out of it as well, reducing it to a dried husk.
The penis monster snored suddenly, reminding Laz of it’s presence.
Just as Laz was about to bring the sword over to it though, the sword shook and grew hot. A sudden blast of energy came charging out of the tip and hit the beast, causing it to burst into white hot flames before burning to nothing in seconds.
The sword shook one last time before being quiet again and Laz got the distinct impression it was saying, ’never try to do that to me again.’
As for the energy that was released, it floated into the air before blinking out of existence, as though it never existed.
And with that, the situation underground was settled.
Making their way to the surface, Laz felt like there was something about this castle that seemed to whisper something to him but he didn’t know what it was.
When they finally arrived back into the ’throne room,’ Laz noticed all the villagers were lined up into rows while waiting for them.
Stepping out from the shadows, Laz and the others almost drew their weapons as a loud cheer began to echo out of the room. The civilians who had almost faced their death underground where now cheering for the heroes who brought them out of the place. For Laz, Two, Seven and Sixteen, this was nothing special as being gladiators meant they had gotten used to the crowd cheering’s.
As for Blake, he was just eating it up while waving and basking in the spot light.
The ones who really felt out of place was the remainder of the legion. As bandits, rogues, murders and basically the scum of the earth, they had never had anyone who acted glad about seeing them before. For so many hundreds of people to be cheering them was a new and unnatural event.
’But it doesn’t feel to bad...’ More than one of them thought as they stood there, more embarrassed than they thought they could be.
Just as Laz was trying to get everyone to settle down, one of the legion members who had been sent out to scout the town ran back inside and quickly yelled to get everyone’s attention.
"BAD NEWS BOSS!" The man said in a clearly upset voice.
"What?" Laz asked, wondering what he found.
"Herds upon herds of beasts are moving in the surroundings. It looks like..."
"Like what?" asked Two as the scout looked around while questioning if this is information that should be shared.
"It looks like beasts we fought at the fortress. Unless I miss my guess boss... I think the fort has fallen and the shadow dragon’s legions have caught up!"
