Contract Marriage with My Secret Partner in Crime
Chapter 174: The Price of Trust
Zephany and Kendrick slowly looked around.
Every angle was blocked. Every path sealed. The ring of armed men stood too close, too disciplined, their fingers steady on the triggers. There was no gap to exploit, no blind spot to rush through. Even if they moved at full speed, even if they dodged the first wave of bullets, the result would be the same.
Someone else would be hit.
Cassius. Dr. Farah. Reynold. Jeric. Sophia. Brent.
That was the cruel certainty pressing down on them.
Zephany clenched her fists, her jaw tightening as the realization settled in. Speed meant nothing when it would only turn the people she cared about into targets. Kendrick felt it too. The calculation ran through his mind in a split second, sharp and merciless.
This was not a battle they could win.
Slowly, reluctantly, they let their hands fall to their sides.
The Chief noticed immediately.
A low, satisfied laugh escaped him as he took a step forward, his boots crunching lightly against the debris-strewn floor. "Good," he said, amusement dripping from his voice. "It’s always refreshing when people know how to admit defeat."
His eyes gleamed as he turned his head slightly. "Farah," he called. "Come here."
Dr. Farah stepped out from behind the line of soldiers.
There was no hesitation in her movements. No trace of fear. Instead, a knowing smirk curved her lips as she walked toward the Chief, her heels echoing softly in the cavernous space. She stopped in front of him, her expression softening just enough to appear affectionate.
Before anyone could speak, the Chief pulled her into his arms.
"I missed you," he said, pressing a kiss against her cheek.
For a moment, the world seemed to freeze.
Cassius’s eyes widened. Reynold’s breath caught. Sophia stiffened, her composure cracking for the first time. Brent stared in disbelief, his mind scrambling to process what he was seeing.
Husband and wife.
The truth slammed into them with brutal clarity.
Cassius felt something cold twist in his chest as he stared at the couple, now standing comfortably together, as if this were nothing more than a long-awaited reunion. Trust shattered in an instant. Every conversation, every shared plan, every moment he had believed Dr. Farah stood on their side replayed in his mind, now poisoned by the truth.
For a second, he could only stare.
Then he laughed.
It was a short, sharp sound, stripped of humor, laced with bitter disbelief. He tilted his head back slightly, running a hand through his hair as the laugh faded into something hollow.
"So this is it," he said quietly, his voice rough. "I really was blind."
The Chief and Farah exchanged a smug glance. Victory sat comfortably on their faces.
The Chief lifted his hand and gestured lazily. "Bring it."
Two soldiers stepped forward, carrying a metal case between them. When they opened it, Cassius’s breath hitched.
Files.
Helix files.
Data he had spent years protecting. Data he had watched burn, convinced it was gone forever.
His laughter died instantly.
Farah noticed the shift and smiled wider. "We moved them," she said calmly. "Before you managed to destroy the facility."
Cassius’s fists clenched so hard his nails dug into his palms. "Why?" he demanded. "Why are you doing this?"
Farah turned to face him fully, her eyes bright with manic excitement rather than guilt. "You know I’m a scientist," she said. "Do you know what scientists want most?"
She did not wait for an answer.
"A breakthrough," she continued. "I’ve studied the Helix serum for years. I’ve tried every method, every variable, every restraint to suppress the side effects and complete it. I was never going to let anyone stop me now."
Her gaze shifted, locking onto Zephany and Kendrick.
"And thanks to you," she added softly, "I finally know what was missing."
Cassius and Reynold moved at the same time.
"Don’t you dare!" they shouted in unison.
Rage surged through both of them, raw and uncontrollable. They lunged forward, intent on reaching her, but the reaction was immediate. Gun barrels snapped upward, cold metal pressing against their backs and shoulders.
"Stay where you are," one of the soldiers barked.
Cassius froze, chest heaving, fury burning behind his eyes. Reynold’s hands shook as he fought the urge to break free, knowing one wrong move would mean blood on the ground.
The Chief waved a hand again. "Take them."
Soldiers closed in on Zephany and Kendrick.
Shackles snapped around their wrists, heavy and unforgiving. Neither of them resisted. They exchanged a brief glance, a silent understanding passing between them. Fighting back now would only get everyone killed.
They allowed themselves to be pushed forward.
Dr. Farah had already turned away, her attention focused on the equipment laid out before her. Glass vials, syringes, test tubes. Her fingers trembled slightly, not from fear, but from excitement.
"Draw their blood," she ordered. "I need it."
She glanced over her shoulder at Cassius, her smile sharp and mocking. "Thank you. I finally discovered the missing element in the serum."
She pointed casually toward Kendrick and Zephany as needles were pressed into their arms.
"It was them," she continued. "Their blood."
Cassius felt like the air had been ripped from his lungs.
Regret flooded him, heavy and suffocating. He had trusted her. He had handed her the data on Kendrick’s condition, on Zephany’s unique response to the serum. He had believed she wanted to save them.
How could he have been so foolish?
He watched helplessly as blood filled the tubes, dark red against clear glass. Each drop felt like a personal failure, a betrayal he had orchestrated himself. His mind spiraled, replaying every decision that had led to this moment, every warning he had ignored.
This was his fault.
Farah noticed his expression and laughed softly, delighted. "You really do have an extraordinary son, Cassius," she said. "And I must thank you for that. His body alone is remarkable. But to discover that his wife possesses a compatible constitution as well?"
She let out a soft chuckle. "A double blessing."
Her voice grew distant, almost nostalgic. "I was ready to give up. Years of research, endless failures. But then you came to me with that data, and suddenly I saw hope again. Temporary stabilization. Containment. Not perfection, but enough."
Her tone darkened as she finished, eyes gleaming. "I’ve been waiting for this day. To take as much blood as I need."
A shudder rippled through the group.
Cassius felt sick. Reynold’s face twisted with rage and helplessness. Sophia looked away, jaw clenched. Brent stood frozen, horror etched into his features. Jeric swallowed hard, fists clenched uselessly at his sides.
Zephany swayed slightly as more blood was drawn, her vision blurring at the edges. Kendrick felt the same weakness creeping into his limbs, a cold numbness spreading through his body.
They looked at each other.
No words were spoken, but the question was clear in both their eyes.
Is there really no way out of this?
Around them, the machines hummed steadily, the soldiers stood unmoving, and Dr. Farah smiled like a woman who had finally achieved her life’s work.
This time even hope felt dangerously thin.
