Chapter 14: Dinner Banter.

Seraphine did not wait to be invited.

She walked into the dining hall with the same quiet confidence she had displayed earlier, her steps measured, her posture relaxed, as though the space had always belonged to her.

The soft flicker of candlelight seemed to follow her movements, catching against the smooth fall of her dark gown, the subtle gleam of the jewels at her wrist, the faint curve of a smile that never quite left her lips.

Rosaline watched her approach.

Every step.

Every shift of expression.

And though her own posture remained composed, her fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around the stem of her glass.

Seraphine reached the table and pulled out the chair opposite her without hesitation, settling into it with an ease that felt almost deliberate....like a quiet claim, a silent declaration that she was not merely a guest in this space.

She belonged here.

And Rosaline.....

Was still being measured.

"How unfortunate," Seraphine began lightly, lifting her gaze to meet Rosaline’s. "To dine alone on your first evening here."

Rosaline said nothing.

She simply held her gaze.

Steady.

Unyielding.

Seraphine’s smile widened just slightly.

"But then again," she continued, resting her chin lightly against her fingers, "His Grace has always been... occupied. Especially when something....or someone....requires his attention."

The words were casual.

Too casual.

And yet, they landed exactly as intended.

Rosaline felt it.

A small, sharp twist in her chest.

Unwanted.

Uninvited but totally undeniable

Seraphine leaned back slightly, her eyes never leaving Rosaline’s face.

"I assume you were told?" she asked. "He is visiting one of his estates tonight."

She paused, tilting her head as though considering something amusing.

"As your husband, of course."

The word lingered.

Husband.

Rosaline inhaled slowly.

Measured.

Controlled.

"I was informed," she replied calmly.

Seraphine studied her for a moment longer, then gave a small, approving nod.

"Good," she said. "Then there is no misunderstanding."

A beat passed.

Then..

"Oh," she added, almost as an afterthought, "you will find that you have... quite a bit of free time here."

Rosaline’s gaze sharpened slightly.

"And why is that?"

Seraphine’s smile returned....soft, knowing, edged with something sharper beneath.

"Because," she said simply, "you will not be needed all the time."

There it was.

Clear and unhidden.

Rosaline felt the sting of it immediately, a quiet flare of something hot and unfamiliar rising within her chest.

Jealousy?...no it was anger.

Sharp.

Unwelcome.

But it did not show on her face.

Instead.....

She smiled.

Softly.

Politely.

"Is that so?" she said.

Seraphine’s brow lifted slightly.

"Oh?"

Rosaline reached for her glass, taking a slow sip before setting it down again with deliberate care.

"I suppose that depends," she continued, her tone light, almost thoughtful, "on how one defines ’needed.’"

Seraphine leaned forward slightly, interest flickering in her eyes.

"And how would you define it?"

Rosaline met her gaze fully now.

"Presence," she said simply. "Position. Recognition."

She tilted her head slightly, mirroring Seraphine’s earlier gesture.

"Legitimacy."

The word settled between them.

Quiet.

Heavy.

Seraphine’s smile did not fade....but something in her eyes shifted.

Subtle.

Barely noticeable.

But there.

"How... interesting," she murmured.

Rosaline allowed herself a small breath.

Then continued.

"You speak as though you understand my place here," she added calmly. "Yet you also speak as though you intend to challenge it."

Seraphine’s fingers tapped lightly against the table.

"And if I do?"

Rosaline did not hesitate.

"Then I would advise you to be certain," she said, her voice still calm, still composed, "of which position you intend to stand in."

A pause.

Longer this time.

Seraphine studied her more closely now, her expression no longer merely amused.

"You are bold," she said slowly.

Rosaline’s lips curved faintly.

"I am cool."

Another pause.

Then.....

Seraphine laughed.

Soft.

Genuine.

"Oh, I like you," she said, leaning back again.

"You are far more entertaining than I expected."

Rosaline inclined her head slightly.

"I am glad I could be of service."

Seraphine’s eyes narrowed just a fraction.

"Oh, you will be," she said quietly.

Then she reached for her food, taking a small bite as though the conversation had shifted into something casual again.

But Rosaline was not finished.

"Tell me," she said suddenly.

Seraphine looked up.

"Yes?"

"You seem very familiar with my husband’s habits."

The emphasis was subtle.

But deliberate.

Seraphine smiled slowly.

"I have known him much longer than you have."

"That was not my question."

A flicker of something sharper passed through Seraphine’s gaze.

"Then perhaps," she replied smoothly, "you should ask more precise questions."

Rosaline leaned back slightly.

"Very well."

A beat.

"How often does he leave his bride alone on the first night?"

The silence that followed was immediate.

Sharp.

Then.....

Seraphine laughed again.

Louder this time.

"Oh, that is unfair," she said, though her eyes gleamed with interest. "You expect me to answer that?"

"I expect honesty," Rosaline replied.

"And you think you will get it?"

Rosaline’s expression did not change.

"I think," she said evenly, "that you enjoy speaking too much to resist answering."

Seraphine stilled.

Then....

She smiled again.

Slowly.

"You may be right."

She set her utensils down carefully.

"Let us just say... His Grace is not known for being predictable."

Rosaline nodded faintly.

"I have noticed."

Seraphine tilted her head.

"And yet, here you are."

"Yes," Rosaline said simply. "Here I am."

Their gazes held.

Neither yielding.

Neither retreating.

Until finally.....

Seraphine exhaled softly, pushing her chair back.

"Well," she said, rising to her feet, "this has been... enlightening."

Rosaline remained seated.

Composed.

Watching.

"I do hope," Seraphine added, smoothing her gown lightly, "that you continue to entertain me."

Rosaline smiled.

Sweet.

Controlled.

"I always do."

Seraphine’s eyes flickered once more.....something unreadable passing through them before she turned and walked toward the door.

This time.....

She closed it behind her.

The moment she was gone.....

Rosaline’s composure shattered.

She pushed her chair back sharply, the sound echoing faintly through the empty hall as she stood, her hands clenching at her sides.

"That woman...." she started, then stopped, exhaling sharply as she turned and walked quickly out of the room.

Her steps were faster now.

Less measured.

Her thoughts louder.

More chaotic.

She barely noticed the servants as she passed them, her mind replaying every word, every look, every subtle implication Seraphine had made.

"She has known him longer..."

"Not needed all the time..."

Rosaline’s jaw tightened.

"She speaks as though she owns him," she muttered under her breath.

By the time she reached her chambers, she pushed the door open without ceremony, stepping inside and closing it behind her with more force than necessary.

She crossed the room quickly.

Then dropped onto the bed.

Fuming.

Her hands came up to her face, pressing against her temples as she exhaled sharply.

"I don’t even know why I care," she muttered.

But the truth...

Was obvious.

The door opened quietly.

"Princess?"

Lily’s voice.

Rosaline lowered her hands, turning her head slightly.

"There you are," Lily said, stepping inside, her expression shifting immediately when she saw Rosaline’s face. "What happened?"

Rosaline sat up.

"That woman," she said simply.

Lily blinked.

"The cousin?"

"Yes."

"What did she do?"

Rosaline exhaled.

"Everything."

Lily frowned.

"...Explain."

And Rosaline did.

Every word.

Every implication.

Every look.

By the time she finished, Lily was already pacing.

"I knew it," she said. "I knew something was wrong with her."

Rosaline leaned back slightly.

"She’s not just a cousin," she said quietly.

"No," Lily agreed immediately. "She’s something else.

A pause.

Then....

Lily stopped.

And looked at her.

A slow smile forming.

"Alright."

Rosaline narrowed her eyes slightly.

"What?"

Lily crossed her arms.

"If she wants to play," she said, "then we play."

Rosaline blinked.

"...What?"

"You heard me."

Lily stepped closer.

"We are not going to sit here and let her walk around like she owns the place."

Rosaline hesitated.

Then....

Slowly.....

A smile formed.

Small.

Dangerous.

"...What do you have in mind?"

Lily’s grin widened.

"Oh, many things."

She leaned in slightly.

"And we are going to start tomorrow."

Rosaline’s eyes gleamed faintly.

For the first time since dinner...

She felt something else.

Not anger.

Not jealousy.

But anticipation.

And somewhere within the mansion....

Unseen.

Unnoticed.

A shadow shifted.

As though something had heard.

And was waiting.
