Days as a Spiritual Mentor in American Comics
Chapter 5776 - 4709: Murderous Intent on a Rainy Night (Part 6)
But this indeed cannot blame Arkham Batman for misunderstanding. Such a plot introduction, combined with the opening at the time, indeed has a strong misleading nature, everyone would think the main storyline is to seal the devil first and then rescue the eldest son.
The main storyline might actually be this. But seeing that Shiller is at least still a person, people would first assume he is the eldest son who was possessed. Then the more the devil is sealed, the closer the eldest son should be to an ordinary person, and thus weaker.
But in reality, the role Shiller plays might not be the soul of the eldest son in this body, but rather the soul of the devil. That passive ability of becoming stronger when injured also follows the devil. The more the devil is sealed, the weaker he becomes, but the weaker Shiller becomes, the stronger he gets. Doctor Manhattan, is there something wrong with you?!
Arkham Batman complains but feels this is the strength he wanted. Seeing Shiller break through the door, he didn’t hesitate, directly jumped down from the skylight, rolled as he landed, got out of Shiller’s sight, then ran toward the nearest side door.
He rushed into the garden but didn’t run towards its depths; instead, he circled around, preparing to go back in through the front door. But just as he got to the front door, he saw Shiller waiting for him there.
He stood alone on the steps full of rainwater, his facial features obscure in the rain lines, yet those gray eyes continuously followed Arkham Batman. Moreover, the void and bewilderment within them vanished; he had completely focused.
Arkham Batman almost immediately realized, the weakening caused by the seal must have unlocked a new skill for him—his tracking vision can see through walls directly. When Arkham Batman jumped down, he must have exposed his back.
Arkham Batman sighed in his heart, then turned around and started running again.
He knew continuing with his back turned might have very serious consequences, but this situation left him no choice. The wound on his shoulder, although small, was bleeding. He estimated his blood volume was about half left, in a better situation he might withstand two more hits, but in a worse one, there was only tolerance for one hit left.
Shiller followed behind him. Arkham Batman was running, but Shiller kept walking, yet faster than Arkham Batman, not by much, but if they kept in a straight line, he would surely catch up.
The violin tune constantly echoed in Arkham Batman’s ears, accompanied by the pitter-patter of rain and the sudden roar of thunder, like a symphony of death. Seeing the distance closing, and the music becoming more urgent, Arkham Batman suddenly stopped abruptly.
He stopped under the big tree in the center of the garden, then kicked the drooping branches to the ground, turning to run again, but Shiller had to cut through the branches with a knife.
There’s hope! Arkham Batman realized, in an open area, he definitely can’t outrun Shiller, he must find obstacles. Luckily, Shiller can’t teleport.
He ran to the other side of the tree, but there were no drooping branches here. Luckily, he saw a utility room with many gardening tools piled up. As Arkham Batman ran over, he knocked over a flowerpot, forcing Shiller to go around it.
Then he immediately kicked over the shovel next to him, causing Shiller to step over it, which would buy some time. If not, he would make a mess with the bag of soil beside him, forcing Shiller to take a longer detour.
He could tell, Shiller didn’t have very agile moves. It might be because the devil and this body were not very compatible, so although he could walk like an ordinary person and unusually fast, he couldn’t pull off moves like double jumps or evasive actions.
After waiting for a while, the skill cooled down, Arkham Batman used another dizzy skill, pulling a certain distance. But continuing like this wasn’t a solution, No.1 and No.2 might be close to death, No.4 got hit and hid, so only he and No.5 could still move freely, but No.5 was utterly unreliable. He can’t drag it out any longer.
Surveying the road ahead, Arkham Batman immediately had a plan. He baited Shiller into running in circles here for a few more rounds, watching Shiller’s condition during the turn intervals and upon finding it almost ready, he ran toward the big tree, vanishing behind it in a flash.
When Shiller walked past under the tree, Arkham Batman reemerged from the treetop. He knew Shiller’s wall-penetrating tracking skill couldn’t be permanent, it must have a time limit. Once that skill time passed, he could dodge using line-of-sight blocking.
Arkham Batman didn’t jump down from the tree immediately because he could see Shiller’s direction from here, thus avoiding him. But unexpectedly, Shiller’s body glowed with a white light again, which likely indicated someone imposed a second seal.
In the next second, the desolate gray eyes looked over again, focusing instantly. Arkham Batman cursed, quickly jumped down from the tree and bolted outside.
This teammate should have been more diligent when needed. Also blame them for not having team voice chat, they should have notified sooner the seal might strengthen Shiller. Now it’s bad, he himself might not be able to escape.
As expected, Shiller’s wall-penetrating tracking skill refreshed. He approached Arkham Batman again, now faster. Just a little faster before, but now Arkham Batman hadn’t even run a few steps before getting sliced again.
"Swoosh!"
"Hiss..."
Arkham Batman took a sharp breath, his vision washed in red. He felt a wound running through his entire back was continuously bleeding, slowing his movements.
Using all his remaining strength, Arkham Batman threw another stun, but evidently, that hit triggered Shiller to enter God of Frenzy Hunt mode. The tune started playing a changed melody, becoming more and more intense. Arkham Batman saw a layer of blood-colored light adhere to the originally silver blade, and Shiller’s eyes began to emit a red glow.
"Swoosh!"
"Ugh!!!"
Arkham Batman was instantly cut down, and the words "Near Death" appeared in his field of vision. He cursed inwardly, still unable to dodge the fatal strike. If anyone was to blame, it was the lack of timely information flow. The team completed the seal at this moment, otherwise, he might have escaped.
Arkham Batman experienced a brief dizziness, then realized he was lying on the ground. Through the reflection of the rainwater on the ground, he saw Shiller did not raise his knife again. Could it be that he cannot follow up with another attack?
Arkham Batman wanted to crawl, but it’s clear he couldn’t get far in this situation. So he simply lay there, watching Shiller’s next move. Suddenly, Shiller picked him up.
This did not surprise Arkham Batman. Shiller, in a weakened state, could erupt with even greater strength, at times comparable to a train, so carrying one person like him was no problem, but where was he taking him?
He initially thought he’d be tossed into the lake, as it was the nearest dumping spot, possibly a terrain kill. But Shiller carried him into the castle, looped around, and found a door at the back resembling a cellar entrance, seemingly heading there.
Arkham Batman immediately understood; to sacrifice them, it might require not only a specific order but also a designated location. Shiller’s puzzle-solving side might not be any easier than theirs.
As Shiller was about to carry Arkham Batman down into the cellar, suddenly a web shot over, causing Shiller to stumble, and Arkham Batman fell directly to the ground.
Arkham Batman instantly realized this must be some setup, that if controlled when carrying someone, they would surely drop, otherwise, Shiller would definitely have caught him.
Arkham Batman didn’t waste the opportunity, immediately activating Cape Dizziness. Unexpectedly, when he was already on the ground, the cape’s hem was lifted by a gust of wind, directly knocking Shiller out.
Suddenly, a scarlet figure landed next to Arkham Batman. He had to muster all his strength and shouted, "Watch out!!!"
Scarlet Spider-Man was unfazed, suddenly taking out a medical kit and starting to bandage Arkham Batman. Arkham Batman was shocked, don’t you want to see who that guy next to you is?!
Amazingly, it took the medical kit only two seconds to wrap up, while the earlier web attack plus cape dizziness roughly gained them three seconds. Arkham Batman indeed got out of the near-death state and could move.
Though the wound on his back remained, and his blood bar might be less than half full, at least he could move freely. And Scarlet Spider-Man did not climb walls again but supported Arkham Batman as they ran out together.
During the escape, Arkham Batman made a strong left turn, directly taking Scarlet Spider-Man to the right corner. This was to avoid Shiller’s line of sight and prevent him from targeting their backs.
Shiller had just used a lot of skills to catch him, which were likely on cooldown now. As long as he didn’t spot their backs in reality, it should be relatively easier to escape.
"Was it you who sealed it?" Arkham Batman looked at Scarlet Spider-Man and asked.
Scarlet Spider-Man shook his head, "It might be No. 1. I saw a figure in a room on the second floor earlier while wall-crawling."
"But isn’t No. 1 down?"
"He can be rescued," Scarlet Spider-Man said, "Using a medical kit or potion both work. I went to save Natasha earlier."
Arkham Batman couldn’t help but give him a thumbs up. Were it not for Spider-Man, they might have all been killed by now.
"It was probably Black Widow who saved Constantine," Arkham Batman speculated, "then Constantine completed the second seal. Just lousy timing, I was being chased then."
"Who’s that last guy?" Scarlet Spider-Man asked.
Arkham Batman shook his head and said, "Don’t count on him. That guy’s a not quite right madman; let him do whatever he wants. We’ve got to find the remaining three seals and seal them simultaneously."
"Why?" Scarlet Spider-Man asked.
"Because sealing doesn’t make the Devils weaker, it makes them stronger. So if we seal separately, we’ll face even more terrifying pursuers."
"But if, like you said, there’s someone we can’t count on, the margin for error is too small," Scarlet Spider-Man cautioned, "for four people to seal three at the same time, it’s nearly impossible."
Arkham Batman knew this just as well. Not to mention under such intense pursuit, even finding three seals successfully is difficult, let alone completing them at the same time without communication, is nearly impossible.
"Rumble——!!!"
Thunder once again tore through the night sky, illuminating the castle in a pale hue for a brief moment, like the skeletal remains of a monster. Yet in the instant when the sky was lit up by lightning, Arkham Batman’s pupils suddenly constricted. He knew what to do.
