Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 502: Hanging by a Thread
Good!
Let’s get started.
He called over the property manager nearby, and Zhang Hui discussed the details with him.
"Manager Zhang, if there’s a power outage here, will people call the property management first?"
The property manager, Zhang Wei, was in his forties, a retired soldier. With this background, communication was easy.
"We have a 24-hour maintenance hotline. If there’s a power outage, they’ll definitely call us to report it. No problem, I can have our team fully cooperate with you."
"Alright then, Manager Zhang, could you please find us three sets of property maintenance worker uniforms?"
"After the report, the three of us will go up."
"I’ll go up with you."
"You?"
"Yes, I’m the property manager. If I go up, they’ll definitely let their guard down."
Zhang Hui thought for a while and finally agreed to Zhang Wei’s suggestion.
The three of them had applied for guns beforehand, so safety wasn’t much of an issue.
"Alright, but you just handle things outside, we’ll do the specific search."
Even though he was a retired soldier, if a conflict arose, without a gun in hand, safety couldn’t be fully guaranteed.
"Okay, I’ll wait at their front desk."
The group returned to the car, put on bulletproof vests, and then dressed in property maintenance uniforms, which disguised them well.
"Manager Zhang, we’re ready."
Zhang Wei had already arranged people over by the power distribution room, and picked up the walkie-talkie: "Old Sun, cut the power."
"Roger!"
The response came within a minute, and the property repair hotline rang.
The person answering was the maintenance supervisor.
"Okay, hold on, I’ll report to the manager. We’ll send a maintenance worker up to check the circuits, please hold on."
Everything was ready, and the four of them took the elevator straight to the 18th floor!
The light inside the elevator wasn’t affected, but when the doors opened, it was pitch black outside.
Someone used a phone to provide light.
"Are you guys with the property management? What’s going on, I went downstairs, and everyone else has power except this floor?"
"Yes, oh dear, boss, my apologies, I’m really sorry. I’m the property manager, Zhang Wei. It seems there’s an issue with the circuits on the 18th floor, we need to check it."
At this moment, Zhang Wei indeed played a crucial role. Upon hearing it was the property manager, the person’s tone improved: "Alright, hurry up, we’re working here, and without power, we can’t see anything."
"Alright, I’ll arrange it right away."
Zhang Wei turned his head: "Zhang, quickly come over and check the circuits in each room, swiftly."
"Okay, President Zhang."
Zhang Hui led the way, flashlight in hand, heading straight for the inside office.
The three didn’t split up, following the walls, pretending to check the power with a test pen at outlets.
"This room’s fine, next one."
The rooms were set up with concealed wiring, so they couldn’t directly see the lines, only testing at the outlets.
Soon, they checked over a dozen rooms, until they reached an office in the northeast corner.
Zhang Hui tried to open the door, but it wouldn’t open.
He turned back to the person who greeted them earlier: "Boss, this door seems locked, we can’t open it."
In the darkness, only the silhouette of the other person was vaguely visible: "No need to check this room, it’s definitely fine."
Huh?
Zhang Hui’s eyes moved: "That’s not possible. We need to check every room, we don’t know where the problem is. If this is the only room left, how can we restore the power?"
The person thought for a moment, then knocked on the door: "President Wu, the property is checking circuits, can we come in?"
President Wu?
The three of them heard this and knew something was up!
After a moment, click, the door lock opened.
Someone inside used a phone light: "Keep it down, someone’s sleeping. Just one of you come in."
Lu Chuan and the other two, with their flashlights, could see the person’s face clearly—it was Wu Lei!
Yang Lin, Zhang Hui, and Lu Chuan were positioned such that Lu Chuan was closest to the door facing the person.
"Brother Zhang, let me go."
Whoever goes in will be at risk.
Lu Chuan had a system reward with firearm and combat skills, so if conflict arose, his ability to protect himself would be stronger.
Zhang Hui was initially going to enter, but since Lu Chuan spoke up first, it was not a time for argument.
"Alright, just be thorough in your check. We have several more rooms to check."
Lu Chuan nodded: "Got it, it’ll be done soon."
Upon entering the room, Wu Lei was a bit impatient: "Brother, hurry up."
"Okay, how many outlets are in this room?"
"I don’t know, look for yourself."
"Alright."
Lu Chuan’s flashlight swung around, spotting a camp bed in the corner with someone lying on it.
Next to it was a bald man, smoking.
Is that Wang Feng?
Who is the other person?
"Boss, these two outlets are fine."
Lu Chuan raised an eyebrow: "Hey, could you move a bit, there’s an outlet I need to check near the corner."
By now, Wu Lei was impatient.
"There’s no outlet over there. Once you’ve checked, leave quietly, don’t disturb my brother who’s sleeping."
Lu Chuan chuckled: "Boss, I work here, if we can’t restore power, we’ll get fined. I can see an outlet at the foot of the camp bed. Could you take my test pen, test it, and let me know if the light comes on?"
While speaking, Lu Chuan handed the test pen over to Wu Lei.
The other man frowned but took the test pen and moved towards the bald man.
"Tiger, you handle it."
The bald man didn’t speak, took the pen, turned, and crouched down to find the outlet.
The bald man was turned away from Lu Chuan, Wu Lei watching him, also with his back to Lu Chuan.
To act or not?
The opportunity was perfect; the person lying on the bed should be Wang Feng, but they were unmoving. What happened?
What to do?
Thoughts spun in Lu Chuan’s mind, recalling Cai Yongqiang’s words: prioritize people!
Damn it!
Whatever, save him first!
Crack!
Lu Chuan suddenly acted, and Wu Lei didn’t react at all. A chop to his neck and he collapsed straight away.
The bald man, hearing the noise, began to rise, his right hand instinctively reaching for his waist.
Lu Chuan lunged forward, his right leg chopping down on the bald man’s back.
Thud!
The man crashed hard to the ground, Lu Chuan quickly straddled him, elbowing the back of his head!
The man immediately went limp.
Outside, hearing the commotion, Zhang Hui and Yang Lin burst in.
"How’s it going?"
"All good!"
Lu Chuan stood up and pulled back the bedding on the camp bed, revealing Wang Feng.
His face was wrapped in tape, and he looked very pale.
"He’s suffocating!"
Damn!
Lu Chuan tore off the tape and immediately began CPR.
Gasp!
After about ten cycles of CPR, the unresponsive Wang Feng suddenly gasped for air.
Followed by intense coughing.
"Damn... how did you guys get here?"
In the flashlight’s beam, Wang Feng could make out who it was—Lu Chuan and Yang Lin!
Yang Lin, seeing him recover, sank to the ground, cold sweat pouring from his forehead.
"Shit, scared the hell out of me."
Even Lu Chuan felt weak all over, thankful for the timely action.
If he had left just now without acting, Wang Feng would probably have been a goner.
"If we didn’t come... you’d be dead by now."
Apparently, the attack on Wang Feng happened right during the power outage, taping his nose and mouth to suffocate him.
When Lu Chuan arrived, Wang Feng was completely unresponsive, practically at death’s door.
Had they been even a few seconds late, rescuing him might have been impossible.
