Forbidden Affair with My Mafia Stepbrother R18 - Chapter 161: Broken Bond
My mother only shook her head violently from side to side in absolute denial, refusing to accept what I was telling her. Tears streamed down her cheeks, and it hurt me more than anything to see her crying.
"No, no more. I won’t hear this anymore. I can’t hear this anymore. Do you realize what you’ve done to me and also to this family? Your selfish and delusional feelings of love are going to destroy everything that I built with Bennett. How can I even look him in the eye now, knowing what you’ve done with his son?" she asked before her eyes narrowed at me.
I was speechless. I didn’t know what else to say or what I could do at that moment to make her stop crying or to lessen the pain and anger that she was feeling. I reached for her again, but this time she pushed me away even harder than before.
"Just get out. I can’t even bear to look at you right now. Please, just get out," my mother said, her voice hoarse and broken.
My entire body froze in place, and I couldn’t bring myself to leave her alone. It felt like if I left, I would lose all opportunity to mend things with my mother.
"Mom," I whispered.
"Please! Please, Abigail, just leave me alone!" she shouted before her voice cracked into a sob.
I could tell that my mother was on the verge of losing it. The tone of her voice crushed me, so I forced myself to head toward the door on my trembling knees. My hand lingered a moment too long on the doorknob as I looked back at her. She refused to meet my eyes. Although I wanted to run to her and beg for forgiveness, I knew that nothing I said would matter to her right now. Nothing would be enough to undo all the wrongs that I had committed.
So I opened the door and silently slipped out before closing it behind me.
When I was alone in the hallway, it felt like the walls were closing in and suffocating me. I had never felt so much despair in my life. It was clear as day that my mother hated me, and she didn’t believe in anything that I believed in. She thought I had destroyed everything, and perhaps she was right.
...
I slammed the door to my bedroom and locked it behind me, my chest heaving with sobs. My mother’s words echoed over and over again in my mind as I replayed what she said.
I staggered towards my dresser before yanking open the drawers blindly. I pulled out clothes from my closet and threw them into my suitcase. My hands shook so badly, and I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t care what I grabbed because all I knew was that I needed to leave. I needed to run away somewhere and vanish before I could hurt my mother in any more ways than I already had.
Tears blurred my vision. My suitcase was barely half full, but I couldn’t stop shoving things inside-random things that I could get my hands on. Nothing mattered to me anymore because nothing felt real.
Suddenly, I heard my phone begin ringing. It was Raphael once again, but I couldn’t bring myself to answer his call. I couldn’t bring myself to hear his voice, not when my world was falling apart like this. Especially not when I wasn’t even sure if he could help me fix it.
Minutes passed as I continued shoving clothes into my suitcase with shaking hands. At first, I didn’t even hear someone knock on my door. It was just a soft thud against the wood, then again, however louder this time.
"Abigail."
His voice was low and firm, but also laced with something gentle and fragile. I froze, my hands gripping a crumpled dress.
"Open the door, please," he said.
I couldn’t move. I wanted to scream, and I wanted to be left alone. But I didn’t get my wish because soon I heard the lock click, and before I could react, the door had already swung open.
Raphael stood there, his eyes scanning the chaos of my bedroom-clothes strewn everywhere and my roughly packed suitcase lying in the middle of the room.
"What are you doing?" he demanded, his voice rough.
I tried to speak, but the words just broke down into sobs.
He crossed the room in strides before grabbing my shoulders and forcing me to face him.
"Abigail, tell me," he said firmly.
I let the dress slip from my hands before finally meeting his eyes.
"She hates me," I whispered. "My mother hates me, Raphael. I told her about us, and she said that I destroyed everything. I think I should leave before I cause any more damage to this family."
All I wanted was to be alone, but it seemed that Raphael wouldn’t allow me to have any sense of peace at that moment. He pulled me into his arms, and I felt his arms tighten around me. I let him pull me close only because I felt too tired to resist. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
I just wished that everything around me would melt away into nothing but darkness. That was how hopeless and hurt I felt about the situation that I had gotten myself into. I could feel his heart beating hard against my cheek as he simply held me close without speaking.
"Gail, listen to me. There is no way that your mother hates you. She’s just very shocked and hurt. She doesn’t understand you or us yet. But trust me, she will come to understand you," Raphael said to me in a soothing voice.
I pulled back just enough to take a look at his face. His eyes were steady as he held my gaze. However, I could sense that there was a storm of emotions raging behind them that he had hidden away from me.
