Chapter 129: Chapter 129: Taking Egg to Stone Gambling

"Oh, is it that family heirloom? The jade earring? How did you lose it?" Mrs. Wang immediately looked at Mrs. Zhao’s ears. A translucent, emerald-green earring hung from her left ear, but her right ear was completely bare. Now Mrs. Wang was worried too. She and Mrs. Zhao were neighbors, and she knew this pair of earrings was a valuable family heirloom. They weren’t just expensive; they held great sentimental value. It would be a terrible shame if it was lost for good.

"It must have fallen off while I was dancing. I checked in the mirror right before I left the house, and both earrings were definitely there." Mrs. Zhao came from a prominent family and was very particular about her appearance. She always checked herself carefully before leaving the house to make sure nothing was out of place.

"Then it must still be in the square. I’ll get everyone to come help you look." Mrs. Wang quickly waved people over to help. "Don’t go yet, everyone! Mrs. Zhao’s earring is missing!"

"What’s going on?" The group of ladies who had just started to disperse all turned around. Once they understood the situation, they quickly bent over, switched on their phone flashlights, and began scanning the ground where Mrs. Zhao had been standing, inch by inch.

"Bin, we’re getting old and our eyesight isn’t what it used to be. You’re young and have sharp eyes, so come help us look." Mrs. Wang called Shen Yibin over as well.

"What does the earring look like?" Shen Yibin asked quickly. When he got a clear look at the one Mrs. Zhao still had on, he couldn’t help but gasp. ’This thing looks expensive.’

So, Shen Yibin and Sylvie joined the search party. Hah’Er scratched his head, confused about what they were all doing. He flopped onto the ground and started looking around curiously, but not only was he no help, he kept blocking Shen Yibin’s line of sight.

"Hah’Er, don’t get in the way. Go wait over there..." Shen Yibin stopped mid-sentence. Seeing Hah’Er reminded him of Egg. ’Since Egg could find the money I dropped under my bed, maybe it can find the jade earring too?’

"Egg, come and help!" ’Huh? Where’d Egg go?’ Shen Yibin stood up and glanced at the stage, but Egg was nowhere to be seen. He quickly looked around. ’That little guy hasn’t run off to play somewhere else again, has he?’

Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Shen Yibin to spot Egg. Just like everyone else, it was on the ground, searching for something. As Shen Yibin watched, Egg was just about to stand up, clutching a shiny little trinket in its paw, before it scurried excitedly over to him.

’He found it already?’ Shen Yibin was overjoyed. But when Egg placed the shiny little trinket in his hand, he felt a wave of embarrassment. He’d thought it was the earring, but it turned out to be just a one-yuan coin. He’d gotten excited for nothing.

"Er, good job. Keep it up," Shen Yibin said, patting Egg’s belly encouragingly. He then carefully slipped the coin into his pocket. ’Can’t look down on a single yuan. Just one more and I can buy a lottery ticket. What if I win five million? Then all my money problems would be solved!’

After that, Egg kept stuffing the "treasures" it found into Shen Yibin’s hands. And surprisingly, there were quite a few lost goodies in the square. Even though the property management cleaned it daily, plenty of coins and loose change were still stuck in the cracks between the paving stones or hidden in the grass. In just that short time, Egg had already found over ten yuan for Shen Yibin.

’Dude, this isn’t what I’m looking for,’ Shen Yibin thought, rendered speechless as he held a handful of grimy bills and coins. ’Does Egg only recognize money and not things like jewelry?’

"Are you sure you didn’t drop it somewhere else? Like in the elevator, or somewhere else in the district? We’ve searched this whole square and found nothing." It wasn’t just Egg who was busy; the other women weren’t idle either. They had spread out and combed through the entire section of the square where they’d been dancing, but still, there was no sign of the jade earring.

"What am I going to do!" Mrs. Zhao said, slumping down dejectedly on the edge of a flowerbed. It wasn’t a matter of money. The jade earring was valuable, but her family could easily afford it. The problem was that it was a family heirloom. Her grandmother had passed it down to her mother, who had then passed it to her. She’d worn it for decades and had planned to give it to her own daughter after she married. To have lost one now... she felt she could never face her grandmother or her mother.

’Huh? What’s Egg up to now?’ Shen Yibin was just about to go over and help Mrs. Wang console Mrs. Zhao when he spotted Egg. The little creature was sprawled on the ground with its butt in the air, wrestling with a paving stone. Its paws were shoved into a crack, desperately trying to pry something out. But Baiyun District was a high-end community in Yunzhong City; the construction quality was top-notch. There was no way Egg could pry a stone loose so easily.

’Could the jade earring be in there?’ Shen Yibin hurried over to help. He shone his phone’s light into the crack and, sure enough, a faint green glimmer reflected back at him. He immediately turned and shouted, "Mrs. Wang! Mrs. Zhao! Come look! I think the earring’s in here!"

"Here, give me the other earring." Mrs. Wang ran over for a look, then borrowed the remaining earring from Mrs. Zhao. She held it up to the phone’s light; its reflection was strikingly similar to the green glimmer from the crack.

"This must be it! I think I was dancing right here." Mrs. Zhao’s voice was filled with renewed hope. Several people immediately rushed forward to try and lift the paving stone, but they couldn’t manage to budge it.

But now that they knew where the earring was, the rest was easy. They found the property management office at the district entrance, borrowed some tools, and easily pried up the paving stone. And there, just as they’d thought, was the jade earring.

"Egg, I really have to thank you. I don’t think I could have rested easy otherwise," Mrs. Zhao said, her voice thick with emotion as she clutched the earring tightly. "Just tell me what you want, and I promise I’ll get it for you."

’Um, can I borrow a million? I’ll pay interest and give it back in six months.’ Shen Yibin’s mind raced with wild thoughts. Meanwhile, Egg sat there looking dumbfounded, apparently sulking because someone had taken the "gift" it found for Shen Yibin.

Of course, he would never say any of that out loud. "Mrs. Zhao, please don’t mention it. This little guy is always rummaging around at home looking for things I’ve misplaced, so helping you was nothing. It’s getting late, so you should head home and get some rest. Otherwise, your family will start to worry."

After much persuading, he finally convinced Mrs. Zhao and the others to head home. Shen Yibin then prepared to return to the shop with Sylvie, Egg, and Hah’Er to rest. On the way, Shen Yibin mulled over Egg’s performance. ’Looks like this little guy can find more than just cash. It’s sensitive to things like jade, too. In that case, I wonder if I could take it jade gambling?’
