Chapter 167: Chapter 167: City Hero Hah’Er

A squad of police officers rushed in. Spotting Hah’Er and the three black bears in the Xiong Mountain enclosure, they asked anxiously, "Where’s the child? Where is he?" ’Please don’t let us be too late.’

"The child’s already been rescued. The director took him to the infirmary for a check-up," Shen Yibin replied casually. "Sorry to make you rush over here."

"It’s no trouble at all, just doing our job. Hey... you’re Mr. Shen, right?" The police captain now recognized Shen Yibin. By this point, virtually every police officer in Yunzhong City had seen photos of him and Hah’Er. The pair’s fame within the police force practically eclipsed that of Yunzhong City’s mayor.

"Yes. I came to the zoo to take care of something and just happened to be here when it happened," Shen Yibin answered vaguely.

"Excuse me, Mr. Shen, what brings you here today?" Just as he finished speaking, a captivating female host in her mid-twenties, microphone in hand, squeezed through the crowd. She extended a hand to Shen Yibin. "Hello, Mr. Shen. I’m Lin Xuezhen, a host with Yunzhong City Television. We happened to be filming a segment nearby and rushed over as soon as we got the news."

Lin Xuezhen had originally just hoped to cover a story about an accident at the zoo, but she hadn’t expected to stumble upon something much bigger. People had been flooding her with videos and photos of Hah’Er’s rescue. She realized that if this story aired, the ratings would go through the roof, so she decided to gather as much information as she could for a special feature.

"Mr. Shen is here to make a donation to our zoo. While this incident was indeed due to our zoo’s negligence, a shortage of funds is also a contributing factor. Thankfully, we have warm-hearted citizens like Mr. Shen donating to us. This time, Mr. Shen made a special trip to deliver a massive donation of 350,000 yuan to help us with our shortage of medical supplies..." Although Dong had left, the zoo director’s assistant was still there. He instantly recognized this as a golden opportunity to appeal to the public for help, so he immediately put Shen Yibin on the spot.

"Three hundred and fifty thousand yuan? That’s no small number!" As the star host of Yunzhong City Television, Lin Xuezhen’s income was certainly not low, but even for her, 350,000 wasn’t an amount she could part with easily. A donation, a run-down zoo, a heroic rescue, and a panda—any one of these elements would be enough to capture the audience’s attention. Combining all of them would undoubtedly make for an amazing show. She immediately started her interview. "Mr. Shen, what inspired you to donate to the zoo?"

"Uh, actually, I had some selfish motives..." ’Since the reporters are already here, I might as well be honest,’ Shen Yibin thought. He repeated the same reasons he had told Dong, concluding, "So, in the end, I was really just doing it for my own benefit."

"But your actions still benefited the zoo. As the saying goes, ’Judge a person by their deeds, not their heart; if we judged by the heart, there would be no perfect people in this world.’ A win-win act of charity like yours is all the more worthy of promotion." Lin Xuezhen was quite skilled, and Shen Yibin found himself impressed by her words. "By the way, could you walk us through what happened just now?"

Although Lin Xuezhen already had the full video of Hah’Er rescuing Hou Longtao, a firsthand account from Shen Yibin would be far more engaging for viewers. So, Shen Yibin recounted the incident one more time. As he spoke, Lin Xuezhen’s expression shifted continuously—from surprise to concern to a gentle smile—and the cameraman filmed her every reaction. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

"Hah’Er is truly clever. Cameraman, please get a shot of Hah’Er and those black bears." After giving the instruction, Lin Xuezhen turned sideways to the enclosure and began her narration. "Viewers, as you can see, this Xiong Mountain enclosure is very small. If Hah’Er hadn’t been here to distract these three black bears, it’s unlikely that the young boy could have been rescued so easily."

Inside the Xiong Mountain enclosure, Hah’Er was now happily roughhousing with the family of three black bears. The crowd erupted in laughter, everyone eagerly capturing the rare moment on their phones and cameras. Once the show aired, countless people would surely be envious of those who had witnessed it in person.

"Mr. Shen, would it be possible to have Hah’Er come up for an interview?" Lin Xuezhen knew pandas were the ultimate crowd-pleaser. Getting a few close-ups of Hah’Er would be an incredible scoop. If she could appear in the same frame as Hah’Er, it would be almost impossible not to go viral. ’This could be my chance to break out of Yunzhong City and onto a bigger stage.’

"We were just about to leave anyway," Shen Yibin said, glancing at the time. "But after I call Hah’Er up, I can’t guarantee he’ll cooperate with the interview." Lin Xuezhen nodded eagerly.

"Hah’Er, it’s time to go home for dinner! Come on up! You can visit your friends again next time," Shen Yibin shouted toward the Xiong Mountain enclosure. ’Are those bears actually his cousins or something?’ he wondered. ’How else could they have hit it off so quickly?’

"Nnnh?" Hah’Er heard Shen Yibin calling. It reluctantly waved goodbye to the three black bears, letting out a few more grunts as if saying a final farewell. Then, it turned toward the enclosure’s exit and promptly fell flat on its face.

It turned out the little bear cub, not wanting Hah’Er to leave, had grabbed onto its hind leg from behind. The sight sent the crowd into roaring laughter. Lin Xuezhen hastily checked with her cameraman, breathing a sigh of relief only after confirming they had captured the whole thing.

Though reluctant, Hah’Er slowly ambled out. Once it was outside, the little bear cub lay down by the exit and watched for a long time. Only after Hah’Er was completely out of sight did the cub finally, reluctantly, return to its parents, looking back with every few steps.

"Hah’Er..." Lin Xuezhen placed the microphone in front of the panda but then froze. She had interviewed all kinds of public figures, but never a panda. For a moment, she was at a complete loss for words. After a long pause, she finally managed a question: "Hah’Er, were you scared when you went down into the enclosure?"

She hadn’t actually expected an answer, but Hah’Er gave her a delightful surprise. First, it shook its big head, then it pointed a paw at the bear cub, as if to say, ’That little fella? Not scary at all.’

Lin Xuezhen was overjoyed. She fired off a whole series of questions at Hah’Er. The panda would sometimes nod, sometimes shake its head, and at one point even rested a paw on its chin as if deep in thought. Its adorable antics completely captivated everyone there.

Seeing that the crowd was growing larger and that it was getting late, Shen Yibin had to interrupt Lin Xuezhen’s interview. He took Hah’Er and left the zoo to head home.

After getting Shen Yibin’s contact information, Lin Xuezhen hurried back to the TV station to produce the segment. First, a three-minute feature story aired on the Yunzhong City evening news. The very next day, they released a full special report. The title of the program was: "Hah’Er: Hero of Yunzhong City."
