Chapter 50: A Million Attempts

Kale was done extracting the necessary gene of the Dark Octagon; with that in hand, he had everything ready to attempt another fusion.

If he were to draw comparisons between building the right DNA framework for his desired beast and that of a tree.

The Dragon’s draconic quality would be akin to the fertile soil for the tree.

The Dark Octagon’s regeneration would be akin to the root.

The Stone Turtle’s powerful body would be like a tree trunk.

The Gene Sequence for all six elemental affinities would be like the spreading branches.

Four Armed Monkey’s creativity would be like the vibrant leaves.

Black Swamp Tigers’ commanding ability over weaker Beasts would be like the flowers, capable of attracting bees.

The Red Tail Peacock’s mental offensive capacity would be akin to a tree’s immune system against foreign invaders.

Now, with the six-element gene sequence showing 80.77% accuracy, Kale drew on the screen how the fusion should occur, emphasizing almost every minute detail of the process.

He uttered, "Attempt fusion of all seven gene sequences...."

[Processing... all data, re-evaluating the instructed path of fusion.]

[Initiating complete fusion attempt No.2]

The mechanical arms from Gene Lab began working on the fusion once more, taking each of the seven already-separated gene sequences, in the same manner as the parts of the tree, from the bottom up.

[Error!!! Error!!!]

[Fusion rejected, probability of assembly 1.00078%]

The red panel of failure flashed, but Kale’s expression didn’t change for a moment, until he was shocked and ecstatic.

Because Kale had expected a complete 0% failure, but to have a 1% jump for success in just the 2nd try was a very big deal. It seemed his increased mental capacity, lack of fatigue even after long periods of work, and healthy state did indeed play a big role in his progress toward success.

What came after was nothing but endless tries from the bottom up, and an infinite loop of try, fail, learn, and then repeat.

[Fusion rejected, probability of assembly 1.00089%]

[Fusion rejected, probability of assembly 1.923%]

[Fusion rejected, probability of assembly 2.35%]

[Fusion rejected, probability of assembly 3.67%]

....

.....

.....

...

..

Kale was so deeply immersed in that infinite loop that he forgot everything else, and he felt no mental or physical fatigue, even under the pressure imposed on his mind.

In the midst of that loop of fail and learn, Kale had for a moment stopped being human altogether.

Because he did not need to; he only needed to achieve the desired success rate. There was no profound thought necessary behind it, no critical thinking, self-analysis, or self-reflection.

Rather, just the need to act like a mechanical robot who could recognize certain basic patterns and improve with every attempt.

Seconds passed, failure.

Minutes passed, failure.

Hours passed, failure.

Days passed, failure.

After six grueling days, his desired notification was whispered by the system,

[Fusion accepted, probability of assembly 80.000001%]

For a moment, Kale was about to continue as he had all this while, until he realized the difference in words; his entire demeanor changed in an instant.

His mind jolted awake from the mechanical state of endless repetition.

Kale’s heart trembled in excitement, as he blurted out, "How the hell did it even work?"

The Gene Lab’s screen displayed the accumulated data, with a detailed explanation of the process, even though he already knew the gist of what had happened.

For a moment, he asked, "How many failed attempts in total did it take to reach this minimum threshold of success rate?"

[System log contains the total record of 506,891 failed attempts till now.]

Kale laughed; even that was an achievement, to have that staggering amount of failed attempts in the span of about 16 days; now he had about 14 days to live.

There was anticipation in his eyes because, now that he had the complete DNA structure with the minimum threshold, it was time to make it grow into a proper chromosome.

Which was why he had requested about 100 Crystal Slimes from his master, which were amongst the rarest types of slimes due to their neutral nature and extreme viability for experiments, especially for Pillcrafters.

If he were to explain it, the sample DNA in his hands was like a withering seed of a tree close to dying; he would plant that seed inside the core of a Crystal Slime, which was akin to planting the seed in a safe and closed-off pot, with special mud exactly made for the dying seed to grow.

Kale uttered, "Implant the sample DNA onto the nucleus of a Crystal Slime..."

This process took much, much longer than any of the previous processes.

[Process failed, severe incompatibility detected. The sample DNA breaks at the moment when it is stimulated to grow.]

[Compatibility between nucleus of the Crystal Slime and sample DNA is 0.05%]

Kale did not show any reaction for a moment, until he smiled, "0.05%? I’ll take it. So, it means I’m on the right path... "

"Just need to increase the stability percentage of the sample DNA greatly and add a compatibility gene from the Crystal Slime for the implantation within its nucleus," surmised Kale with contained excitement.

So, he started from scratch once more.

Four more days passed, without leaving the experiment room, without sleep for a minute, without stopping for a single second.

Since his physical or mental state did not deteriorate and his stamina was kept constant due to the artifacts. His work did not lose its efficiency as it was supposed to.

The system suddenly prompted, as usual.

[Process succeeded, with a 95% stability rate of the DNA sample for the desired Beast has been implanted onto the Crystal Slime’s Nucleus.]

[Compatibility rate is at 90%]

Kale, as usual, did not even glance at the notification and continued with his usual process as if it were a failure.

Then another notification flashed: [Congratulations, Host has succeeded after 1,100,405 attempts of failure.]

It was only then that he stopped and said softly, "So I finally succeeded." He heaved a soft sigh of relief.

But then his eyes widened in shock; his brain had not processed that information completely, as he was in the complete focus zone.

Kale stammered and asked just to be sure, "What the hell do you mean I succeeded?"

The system was quiet for a moment, until it responded in a bit more detail,

[Host has succeeded in the hardest process of his Desired Chimera creation; the rest of the process will be quite easy and will not be filled with endless failure.]

Kale was still in his shocked state until the excitement of succeeding after a million failed attempts finally kicked in, and he banged his fist onto the table in sheer excitement.

"YESSSSSS, YES, YES, YES, FUCK YEAH, I DID IT...." he screamed at the top of his lungs in joy.
