Harem Of Eternal Yandere Beasts: My Legendary Wives
Chapter 54: Trial (4)
Astra was seated on the opposite side of the room from Seth. She looked at Orion when he came in and her expression did the small real smile very briefly and then returned to composed.
He took a seat that was not adjacent to anyone specific and put Cipher into storage and let Mist do the same and Luna sat in cat form on the seat beside him because Luna made her own decisions about seating arrangements and always had.
Serath came in two minutes later.
She had the documentation slate and the sharp-eyed expression and she moved through the room with the specific authority of someone who operated on a separate charter from everyone present and knew it and didn’t make anything of it because she didn’t need to.
She sat across from Orion.
Put the documentation slate on the table between them, face up.
He looked at it.
The top line read: Candidate Orion Ashbourne. Direct Imperial Recommendation. Category: Exceptional.
Below that, a formal notation in the evaluator’s standard format. Three contracted summons, all Elite ranked. Sovereign Core attribute confirmed. Trial performance: Diamond-adjacent calibration reached, formation assessment capabilities demonstrated, independent combat capability established.
Below that, one line that was not standard notation format.
First Sovereign Core candidate identified in imperial records in forty years. Recommend priority placement.
He read the last line twice.
Looked at Serath.
She was watching him read it. "You have questions," she said.
"One," he said. "Priority placement means what specifically."
"It means the academy identifies you as a candidate whose development is considered strategically significant," she said. "You receive access to resources, instructors, and materials that are not available through standard placement." She paused. "It also means you receive significantly more attention from people who have interests in strategically significant candidates."
"Wanted and unwanted attention," he said.
"Both," she said. "The same as now, but more concentrated and with higher stakes."
He looked at the slate.
Thought about what the system had said. Sovereign Path: Next stage revealed. He hadn’t opened that yet. He’d been waiting for a moment that wasn’t the middle of a trial arena.
"The academy," he said. "When."
"Term begins in six weeks," she said. "I’ll submit the formal documentation today. You’ll receive the official acceptance within the week." She looked at him steadily. "The recommendation is not conditional on anything further. It’s already made."
"And the priority placement," he said.
"Also not conditional," she said. "Though it will be confirmed through initial academy assessment."
He nodded.
She picked up the slate. Stood. "I’ve observed a great many selection trials," she said. "They’re usually interesting in a narrow way. A candidate performs well or doesn’t, the family dynamics play out, the rankings are established." She paused. "This morning was interesting in a different way."
"The mechanism," he said. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"The mechanism is a documentation matter now," she said. "The Patriarch has it." She looked at him. "I mean what happened in the arena itself. Three Elite contracts operating in synchronized coverage. A displacement skill with zero external signature in a suppression environment. Formation detection and interference under combat conditions." She paused. "And the fourth wave onwards, where you were actually working."
"The constructs recalibrated," he said.
"They tried to," she said. "They couldn’t keep up because your output signature reads lower than your actual capability, so every calibration was conservative." She looked at him with those sharp eyes. "In six weeks at the academy the assessment formations will have the same problem. You will need to decide whether to address it or not."
He thought about that.
"Thank you," he said.
She nodded. Walked out with the same nothing-to-announce quality she’d walked in with.
The formal results announcement happened on schedule. Elder Wexford read the assessments. Standard format, ranking by performance score, trial completion status, academy recommendation eligibility.
Seth: Completed. High performance. Standard recommendation eligible.
Celia: Completed. High performance. Standard recommendation eligible.
Astra: Completed. Exceptional performance. Standard recommendation eligible.
Secondary candidates: Completed. Mid performance.
Orion Ashbourne: Completed. Exceptional performance. Direct Imperial Recommendation, priority placement category.
The room did the thing rooms did.
Seth’s jaw moved once.
Wexford continued reading the standard procedural conclusions, the trial officially closed, the formal documentation to be filed, the academy submission timeline.
Orion listened to enough of it to confirm nothing required his immediate response and let the rest of it wash over him while he ran the system notification he’d been sitting on.
◈ REWARD UNLOCKED ◈
[Survive the Academy Selection Trial :: Complete]
Mythic Energy: +100
Current Total: 501 / 100
◈ SOVEREIGN PATH :: NEXT STAGE REVEALED ◈
The Sovereign Core develops through accumulation and adversity.
Stage 1 built the foundation. Stage 2 refines what the foundation carries.
The academy is not the next stage.
The academy is the environment in which the next stage occurs.
What the academy has that this estate does not:
Sovereign Path practitioners. Plural.
The woman who left you the room was not the last.
She was not alone when she disappeared.
Her students, their students, their students.
A lineage that went underground forty years ago and has been waiting for confirmation that the attribute had not died with her.
The confirmation is you.
They will find you at the academy.
Or you will find them.
◈ NOTE ◈
You thought the old bastard worked alone.
He doesn’t.
He never did.
Enjoy the next phase.
◈ ◈ ◈
He read it through twice.
Practitioners. Plural. A lineage that had been underground for forty years waiting for the attribute to reappear.
The woman who had left the room. Her students. Their students.
Forty years underground, which meant they would be at the academy as what. Students themselves? Instructors? Staff? Hidden in the general population of a place large enough to conceal people who didn’t want to be found until they were ready to be found.
He thought about the old bastard and his very long setup and the way the whole thing had been arranged with the specific precision of someone who had been coordinating many pieces across a long timeline.
Not alone.
Of course not alone.
He closed the screen.
The formal announcement had concluded. The gathering room was dispersing. People moving toward whatever came next in their day now that the trial was concluded and the results were documented and the various positions had been shifted or confirmed.
Seth walked toward the door.
Passed within three feet of Orion.
Didn’t slow down.
But he said, very quietly, aimed at nothing in particular: "Enjoy the academy."
Orion looked at his older brother’s back as he walked out.
The tone had been carrying something that took him a moment to identify because it was unfamiliar from Seth.
It wasn’t contempt.
It wasn’t hostility.
It was something that was almost honest and was almost, underneath everything, acknowledgment.
Almost.
Seth walked out without looking back and Orion filed it as data.
Astra appeared at his side.
"Priority placement," she said.
"So it seems," he said.
"The Sovereign Core notation," she said. "Serath put it in the formal documentation."
"She did."
"Which means the academy administration will know before you arrive," she said. "Which means whoever’s been waiting for that confirmation at the academy will know."
He looked at her.
She looked back. "You already knew that would happen."
"I assumed it would," he said.
"And you’re not concerned," she said.
"I’m curious," he said.
She considered him for a moment. "Six weeks until term," she said.
"Yes."
"I’m also going," she said. "Standard recommendation. I’ll be a second year."
"I know," he said.
"Which means you’ll have someone who knows the layout and the dynamics before you arrive," she said, with the specific tone of someone noting a fact and not making anything of it.
"Useful," he said.
"Consistently," she said.
She walked out.
He looked around the emptying gathering room. At the space where six weeks ago he hadn’t existed as a real variable in anyone’s calculations. At the door Seth had walked through and the seat Celia had occupied and the documentation slate Serath had put in front of him.
Luna jumped from the chair to his shoulder in cat form and settled.
"Master is thinking," she said.
"Master is always thinking," he said.
"Master is thinking about what comes next," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Hehe." She pressed her chin to the top of his head. "Tell me."
"A school full of people I don’t know," he said. "At least some of whom have been waiting for me specifically. A Sovereign Path lineage that went underground and has been operating quietly for forty years. Priority placement that will make me visible from day one." He paused. "And five hundred Mythic Energy to spend on whatever the situation requires when I get there."
"And Luna," she said.
"Obviously," he said.
"And Mist," she said.
"And Mist," he confirmed.
"And Cipher."
"And Cipher."
"And Doran," she said. "He won’t be at the academy but he’ll be a resource."
"Yes."
"And Voss," she said. "His family has connections."
"Yes."
"And Astra," she said, with the specific tone of someone acknowledging something they’d decided to accept. "Who is useful."
"Who is useful," he agreed.
She was quiet for a moment.
"Master built an entire network in six weeks," she said. "In a place that started as hostile. Against a plan built over three years by someone who had thirty years of experience running these operations." She pressed closer. "And master is sitting here calmly thinking about what comes next."
"Someone has to," he said.
"Hehe." The warmth was the full version. "That’s master."
He stood up.
Looked at the empty gathering room one last time. At the door. At the morning light coming through the high windows.
He pulled up the system.
