Chapter 2312: Story 2313: The Deep Signal

The thing beneath the Root awakened slowly.

Not with movement.

With sound.

A low vibration rolled upward through the underground world like the groan of a planet shifting beneath their feet. The cavern walls trembled violently while black fungal veins brightened across the stone in pulsing waves.

THOOM.

THOOM.

Then something answered from below.

A signal.

Ancient.

Intelligent.

Wrong.

Maya felt it immediately inside her skull.

Not words.

A presence.

Huge beyond comprehension.

The Harvesters throughout the cavern collapsed onto their knees simultaneously, shrieking in agony. Even the Shepherd staggered backward slightly as though struggling against the force rising from beneath the earth.

Ethan’s white eyes widened.

“It’s awake too early,” he whispered.

Selena gripped her rifle tighter.

“What the hell is down there?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Because somewhere deep inside themselves—

They already knew.

The Root was never the real infection.

It was only connected to something older.

Something buried long before BLACKTHORN arrived.

The cavern floor cracked open again.

Black mist poured upward from the fissures, twisting through the air like living smoke. Everywhere the mist touched, fungal growth spread instantly across the walls.

The Root was reacting in fear.

Fear.

Maya stared at the massive organism surrounding them.

The same entity that had consumed cities... was terrified.

The Shepherd slowly lowered its head.

“The Deep Signal,” it growled.

Selena looked horrified.

“That’s impossible.”

“You heard it before,” the Shepherd whispered. “During excavation.”

Fragments of memory flashed across Selena’s face.

Maya saw realization dawn in her eyes. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

“The drilling site,” Selena muttered weakly. “The lowest chamber...”

Ethan looked toward the darkness below.

“There was never one organism underground,” he said softly. “There were two.”

THOOM.

A deafening crack split the cavern.

Far below them, an enormous red light slowly opened in the abyss.

An eye.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat.

The thing beneath the Root was colossal.

She could only glimpse fragments of it through the darkness—vast layers of black organic mass shifting beneath ancient stone. Tendrils thicker than buildings moved slowly beneath the earth like sleeping serpents.

And at the center—

That massive glowing eye stared upward.

Watching them.

Watching her.

The whispers inside Maya’s mind became screams.

Images flooded her thoughts.

Ancient civilizations collapsing.

Entire forests consumed by black growth.

Human bodies fused together beneath the earth.

This thing had existed long before humanity.

And somehow—

BLACKTHORN had awakened it.

Selena backed away in horror.

“No... we sealed the chamber...”

“You fed it,” the Shepherd replied.

The merger creature suddenly shrieked violently on the cavern floor before bursting apart into black fungal mass. The Harvesters surrounding the chamber began twitching uncontrollably.

Their bodies were changing again.

Bones cracked.

Limbs stretched.

The Deep Signal was evolving them further.

Ethan suddenly grabbed Maya’s wrist.

His skin felt ice cold.

“You have to leave.”

“What about you?”

His expression broke sadly.

“There may not be an ‘me’ much longer.”

The cavern shook harder.

Huge chunks of stone crashed from the ceiling while screams echoed through tunnels leading toward the surface. Somewhere above them, entire sections of the silos were collapsing into the earth.

The Shepherd turned toward the abyss below.

“It rises.”

Selena stared at the glowing eye in the darkness.

“If that thing reaches the surface...”

“It won’t stop,” the Shepherd finished.

Maya looked around desperately.

“There has to be a way to kill it.”

Silence followed.

Then Selena whispered the words Maya feared most.

“There is.”

Everyone looked at her.

Selena’s face had gone pale.

“The neural core beneath the Root controls the entire underground network.”

Maya understood instantly.

“If we destroy it...”

“The whole colony dies,” Selena finished quietly.

Thousands of connected humans.

The Harvesters.

Ethan.

Maybe even the Shepherd.

All linked together beneath the earth.

The glowing eye deep below slowly narrowed toward Maya.

Then a voice entered her mind directly.

Clear.

Ancient.

Maternal.

Come home, First Daughter.
