The underground world died screaming.

Maya ran through collapsing tunnels beside Selena while Ethan stumbled between them, barely conscious. Behind them, the neural core continued rupturing beneath BLACKTHORN Division, sending waves of fire and fungal decay through the earth itself.

The Deep Signal was breaking apart.

THOOOM.

The heartbeat that had haunted the world for years faltered violently.

Then weakened.

Stone cracked overhead. Entire sections of the tunnel collapsed behind them as black fungal veins across the walls withered rapidly into ash-like decay. Harvesters littering the corridors convulsed helplessly on the ground, their bodies collapsing into rotting masses as the connection controlling them vanished.

Selena pulled Ethan forward desperately.

“Keep moving!”

Ethan coughed blood onto the floor.

His white eyes flickered weakly toward Maya.

“Did... we stop it?”

Maya didn’t answer immediately.

Because somewhere deep inside her mind—

She could still hear faint whispers.

Not gone.

Only distant now.

The final words of the Deep Signal echoed through her thoughts like fading radio static.

A violent explosion thundered behind them.

The shockwave hurled all three across the tunnel floor. Maya slammed hard against broken stone while dust and burning debris filled the air.

A final roar erupted from the abyss beneath the earth.

The ancient creature beneath the Root was alone again.

Maya climbed upward through broken concrete and emerged into devastation.

The silo valley was gone.

Massive fires burned across the landscape beneath the storm-filled sky. Entire sections of the industrial complex had collapsed inward, forming a gigantic crater where BLACKTHORN once stood buried beneath the earth.

Military vehicles burned along shattered roads.

Bodies covered the ground.

Some human.

Some not anymore.

The infection had torn through everything.

Rain poured across the ruins as emergency sirens echoed faintly in the far distance.

Selena climbed out behind her supporting Ethan carefully.

And then they saw the Shepherd.

The massive creature stood at the edge of the crater beneath the rain.

Motionless.

Dying.

Most of its fungal armor had decayed away during the overload, exposing torn human flesh beneath. Its pale eyes watched the burning horizon silently.

Maya stepped toward it carefully.

The Shepherd looked at her.

It truly looked human.

“You chose them,” it whispered weakly.

Maya swallowed hard.

“I’m sorry.”

The creature gave a slow, painful nod.

Then its massive body finally collapsed beside the crater.

Rain washed black fungal blood into the ruins below.

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

“Was it really a monster?” he asked softly.
