Chapter 2340: Story 2341: Return to Earth

The doorway waited silently in the void.

Beyond it, Earth turned slowly beneath blue oceans and drifting clouds like a memory Maya had almost lost forever.

Home.

So small compared to the endless galaxies surrounding her now.

So fragile.

The Sleeper stood beside her in silence while distant silver lights moved far beyond the pathways between worlds.

Watching.

Searching.

Hunting.

Maya looked toward them one final time.

“If they find Earth again...”

They will not come as they did before, the Sleeper said quietly.

Maya frowned.

“What does that mean?”

The Sleeper’s single dark eye narrowed slightly.

Now they know humanity can resist assimilation.

A cold realization spread through her chest.

The Harvesters would not try to consume Earth peacefully next time.

They would come to destroy it.

The void around them pulsed faintly.

Far away, ancient silver shapes drifted between dead galaxies like predators circling unseen prey. Maya could feel their awareness touching the pathways now.

Searching for the Bridge.

Searching for her.

The Sleeper extended one hand toward the doorway.

Go home, Maya Kane.

She hesitated.

“You’re not coming?”

For the first time, sadness moved across the ancient being’s voice.

My existence is bound to the pathways now. If I cross fully into your world, the Devourers will follow.

Maya lowered her eyes.

After everything... the Sleeper would remain alone between worlds.

Guarding the dark forever.

“You saved us.”

No.

The Sleeper looked toward Earth.

You saved yourselves.

Silence stretched gently between them.

Then Maya stepped toward the doorway.

Warm air touched her face instantly.

Wind.

Rain.

Life.

Earth.

The moment she crossed the threshold, the void shattered behind her like black glass breaking across infinity.

Light exploded around her.

Then gravity returned.

Maya slammed hard into freezing snow.

Pain shot through her body as icy wind roared across the mountainside. She gasped sharply, fingers digging into real earth beneath her hands.

Earth.

She was back.

For several seconds she could only breathe while snow fell softly around her beneath a pale morning sky.

The storm was gone.

Site Zero lay buried beneath collapsed mountains behind her, half-consumed by ice and silence. Black scars still stretched across the frozen landscape where silver infection had once spread, but nature was already reclaiming the ruins.

A distant sound reached her through the wind.

Engines.

Maya looked up weakly.

A military convoy moved slowly through the valley below—armored vehicles carrying survivors across the snow-covered roads.

Humanity rebuilding.

Her chest tightened painfully.

They survived.

Suddenly voices echoed nearby.

Soldiers.

Maya staggered toward the sound through the snow-covered rocks until figures appeared beyond the ridge ahead.

Armed survivors wearing cold-weather gear froze instantly upon seeing her emerge from the storm.

One soldier raised his rifle shakily.

“Wait...”

The man’s eyes widened.

Impossible recognition crossed his face.

Maya stopped breathing.

Because she recognized him too.

Lucas.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

For one endless second neither of them moved.

Then Lucas dropped his weapon into the snow.

“Maya?”

Her knees nearly gave out.

Lucas ran toward her across the frozen ridge while the other soldiers stared in disbelief.

“Maya!”

He caught her before she collapsed completely.

Real.

Warm.

Alive.

Tears filled Maya’s eyes instantly as she gripped his jacket weakly.

“You survived...”

Lucas looked at her like he was afraid she might disappear again.

“We thought you were dead.”

Far above them, sunlight finally broke fully through the clouds over Earth.

But as Maya held onto the world she had crossed galaxies to save—

Something deep beneath the distant ocean stirred silently in darkness. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

A faint silver glow pulsed once beneath the abyss.

Waiting.

Listening.

Because somewhere beyond the stars—

The Harvesters were still searching for the Bridge.
