Hunter of Mysterious Creature
Chapter 805 - 70: Treasure Map (Part 2)
"Yes, considering you encountered the deadly sandstorm while delivering it, I am willing to pay you double the mission reward," Nagano Souta said.
"Can you tell me what's inside?" Sun Hang asked.
Sun Hang did not use the Mind Reading Technique on Nagano Souta - although the other was already a wreck, he was still considered an infected person. If Sun Hang used the technique on him, he would be able to sense it.
"Haven't you already opened it and seen it?" Nagano Souta said with a smile.
"How did you know?" Before leaving the hotel, Sun Hang had already used his "dreams come true" ability to restore the box holding the card. From the outside, it showed no signs of having been opened.
"Since you walked in, you've been staring at the papers on my desk. From the look in your eyes, it's obvious you've seen similar things elsewhere," Nagano Souta said, "I didn't intend to hide it from you; it's a treasure map, and the item in your hand is the final fragment of this map."
"A treasure map?" Sun Hang opened the box and took out the little card. "Can you tell me what treasure is hidden?"
"I don't know." Nagano Souta shrugged his shoulders and said.
"You don't know??" Sun Hang suddenly found it a bit funny, "You don't even know what's hidden, yet you call this a treasure map? What if following the coordinates leads you not to a treasure, but to a deadly anomaly? What would you do then?"
"I'm not interested in the treasure within the map." Nagano Souta shook his head.
"Do you even hear what you're saying?" Sun Hang pointed to the dozens of paper pieces on the table, "If you're not interested, then I'll take all these papers with me."
"Once the treasure map is pieced together, I plan to post it online, allowing all interested hunters to view it freely," Nagano Souta stated, "In fact, I started collecting the fragments under someone's commission."
"Commission? Commissioned by whom?" Sun Hang narrowed his eyes, "I have plenty of reason to believe this is a trap to lure hunters into danger. If you can't convince me, I have the authority to take you in for investigation... Oh, I forgot to introduce myself, I am..."
"You are Sun Hang, the legendary hunter who resolved Chimera 17 and Eternal Night in Celestial City, going from a nobody to one of the Federation's top hunters in under a year, even with high clearance in Dubhe Tower," Nagano Souta introduced for Sun Hang.
"You know me?" Sun Hang was slightly surprised, "Am I really that famous?"
"In Chunfeng, your name is known to almost everyone, but someone who truly knows you is probably only me... I have a few old friends who participated in your 'Insecticide Project,' one of whom privately recorded a video during the mission, capturing you," Nagano Souta said, "But rest assured, I advised him to delete the video."
Sun Hang was momentarily unsure of what to say – the other party clearly said everything that needed saying.
"You certainly can investigate me, but before that, can you let me piece the treasure map together?" With these words, Nagano Souta extended a hand to Sun Hang.
"What changes will occur once it's pieced together?" Sun Hang handed the small card to Nagano Souta.
"I am just as curious as you." Nagano Souta placed the last fragment of the treasure map on the table and then fell into deep thought.
Until Sun Hang was getting slightly impatient and about to ask how much longer it would take, Nagano Souta's two mechanical prosthetic limbs suddenly moved, and the ten fingers, more dexterous than any natural limbs, quickly rearranged the fragments... In a mere thirty seconds, all the little pieces on the table had been repositioned.
"No... still not right..." Nagano Souta's hands hovered above the table, slowly shaking his head.
"What's wrong?" Sun Hang asked.
"The order is wrong... The person who commissioned me to piece the treasure map told me that once the sequence is correct, the location marked on the map will become crystal clear..." Nagano Souta muttered.
"Who exactly commissioned you?"
"An unnamed Free Hunter told me during an exploration, he discovered a treasure in the Hexi Corridor's no man's land, capable of changing the course of human civilization, but they couldn't take it with their resources. One of his companions could only draw the coordinates into a treasure map and divided it into thirty-two pieces, imprinting them deep in the minds of thirty-two individuals with mental suggestions..."
"Where is this unnamed Free Hunter now?"
"He's dead." Nagano Souta shook his head, "He died eleven years ago, and to find the other thirty-one people who ventured with him into the no man's land, I spent a full twenty-five years."
"So, you're the one spreading rumors of treasure found in the Hexi Corridor's no man's land recently?" Candle Dragon asked.
"It was indeed me... The hunter's team initially had thirty-two people; each was skilled, yet even so, they couldn't retrieve the treasure. Therefore, this time, I need to gather more hunters..."
"And if someone gets that treasure this time? Would you buy it from them or use some 'other means' to acquire it?"
"I won't do anything; I'm just curious about what this treasure truly is," Nagano Souta replied, "If it's as the hunter said, something that can change the course of human civilization, then the Federation Government and Dubhe Tower would surely take action. Even if I wanted it, it wouldn't be something I could possess."
"Then what's your motive?"
"That unnamed Free Hunter was my father," Nagano Souta disclosed, "My name comes from my mother, while the treasure map's news and the life-threatening anomaly plague came from my father."
"You don't even know your father's name?" Sun Hang was somewhat stunned.
"My mother doesn't know his name either. People who knew him referred to him as 'Anonymous,'"
"Hunter Anonymous?" Candle Dragon's eyes showed slight change, "I think I've heard of him."
"You know him?"
"I don't know him." Candle Dragon shook his head, "I only know there was such a person, but I know little of his deeds. I only heard that he was active in the northwest border, completing many high-difficulty tasks."
"My father left me quite an inheritance. I managed to start Chunfeng because of that legacy," Nagano Souta said, "Finding what's in the treasure map was my father's last wish... He unfortunately suffered from Alzheimer's in his late years, even forgetting my and my mother's names, yet never forgot the 'treasure' left in the no man's land."
"So that's the case…" Sun Hang said, "I have one more question."
"Go ahead."
"Since your father was so obsessed with this treasure, why didn't he organize another group of hunters to search the no man's land? Why did he divide the treasure map into thirty-two pieces, adding difficulty instead? Did he not want you to find this treasure at all?"
"No... there was a reason to divide the map into thirty-two pieces," Nagano Souta began, "My father once told me, anyone who has seen the treasure without exception would be overwhelmed by internal greed, even fighting among themselves for it... Back then, fifty-seven people went into the no man's land, and finally only thirty-two survived."
"... It seems a bit sinister," Sun Hang remarked, "How did these thirty-two survive?"
"One of them, a hunter, had memory-related abilities, capable of sealing, erasing, or even altering memories. Once he sustained a deadly wound, he regained clarity and erased everyone's memory of the treasure. On his deathbed, he divided the treasure's location into thirty-two parts, sealing them in the minds of the thirty-two survivors,"
"The thirty-two survivors agreed never to reunite this life unless the problem of mutual destruction could be solved, nor piece the treasure map together," Nagano Souta added.
"Has this problem been solved now?" Sun Hang asked.
Nagano Souta shook his head.
